I am looking for some shoelaces that actually stay tied. My sons has tried several different kinds and they all come unlaced constantly. Anyone have any good ones that they would recommend?

I finally gave in and bought them those squiggly laces. Payless has them in flourescent colors (which matched their shoes) for $1.99 a pair. They were slightly difficult to figure out how to put on the shoes (I rarely ever see kids with them so had a hard time figuring out what the end result was supposed to look like).

They are fantastic and my kids and I have loved them.

I'm annoyed to have to buy them as my kids are older...but now I'm almost tempted to get them for MY sneakers LOL!!!

well worth 1.99. I've seen them for much more....up to $5.

I have the same problem with DS9 as well as my DH! For DS, it's b/c he doesn't pull it tight when he's lacing up his shoes. When I tie it for him they usually stay tied.

For DH, I really believe it's b/c he's left handed and pooh sized. For some reason, his laces don't stay tied either

Funny thing about DS last school year - his teacher gave him a cute certificate for "The most unhappy shoe laces". No matter how often he tied them, 2 minutes later they would be untiied :rotfl: We thought it was kind of cute.

We sometimes bought new flat laces for kids shoes as opposed to rounded ones that often come with the shoes- the flat ones seemed to stay tied up better.

It could also be the way he is tying his shoelaces, if pretty much ALL of them come untied. The same thing used to happen to me. Then someone here on the DIS said there was a different way to tie a knot.

I was tying a granny knot. This DISer talked about the IAN Knot. Since I learned it, I haven't had any shoes come untied - including all those slippery laces. :thumbsup2

I found the post: :surfweb:

Here is a good site for tips for teaching children:

And I HIGHLY recommend learning the Ian Knot. Once you figure it out and practice a few times, it is the easiest way to tie a shoe. Also, they don't come undone. I struggled with my laces always coming untied until a few years ago when I learned the Ian Knot.

and GOOD LUCK - it's not easy to teach!

:thumbsup2 Those curly things are the best!

The only other option is to teach your kids to double knot their shoelaces. But honestly, I have a pair of shoes that the laces come undone even with double knots, so that's not a foolproof solution, either.

If you double knot them with granny knots, yes, they will come undone. BTDT. Really the Ian knot works. :thumbsup2

Flat laces with some stretch have more holding power. Also my kids double knot.

Not sure what works but I am checking out the ideas listed here. My ODS has a pair of Vans sneakers that ALWAYS come untied..I could put 500 knots in it and those darn things will be untied shortly after. They are a nightmare.

When I was a middle schooler/young high school student there was a trend to lace our shoes in a way where it looked like the laces just went straight across (they didn't visibly "criss cross" on the top) and they tied inside the shoe. I think that might work for those shoes as I suspect that part of the issue is the bow being large/flopping around as the laces are kind of long. Problem is I can't remember the "lacing technique" that made it do that.

Never heard of the Ian knot before. I just looked it up and will have to give it a try (though it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks :lmao:). If I can figure it out and it works for me, I'll try to teach my son to do it too.

Shoes with velcro closures.

When I had 4 kids under the age of 8, these were a lifesaver!
