Kids saying the G word

My children are not allowed tp say Oh my God-when my daughter does slip and say it, she gets the same talk from me that she would if she was cursing.
I do say it sometimes, but was not allowed growing up, I just picked it up, I suppose.
Now with kids, I stop myself.
I don't mind hearing other adults/teens saying it, but when I hear little kids saying it, I don't like it.

I agree! I really dont care if my daughter says it and I dont care if kids around say it..theres a lot worse stuff they could be saying. We do not believe in any God so it doesn't offend me to hear the word God used in any way.

You are right Aprilgail2 there are worse things the kids can say but if we teach them when they are young to not say a simple phrase like OH MY GOD it will make it easier to teach them not to say Holly S either F you and so on. If they know it is wrong to say something as simple as OMG then it is easier to show them it is not good to say the others. I do not go to curch and do not really believe in God either but out of the politeness and decentcy to others why should we not practice being a little more courtious and thoughtfull of others it would make things a little better for everyone.

We say OMG often. My grandmother is VERY religious and says it all the time. I've never thought of it as a negative thing. It doesn't bother me to hear others say it.

I guess it just boils down to what you are used to. When I was growing up, kids in my family never used the word lie or butt. If someone wasn't telling the truth we were taught to say they are telling a story. Instead of butt we'd say behind.

We really try not to use that phrase...oh my gosh works better for us. I have never liked the word butt. Just hated it. There are a lot of other phrases/words I dislike but that's just me. Shows a decided lack of creativity to use the same old verbiage. I do go to church but I'm trying to teach my dd to show respect to all people and their traditions, not just ours. I went to a town wide affair just last Friday night. A somber thing...Relay for Life. Celebrating cancer survivors and remembering those that lost their fight. It really made me mad to hear the language teens were using. Yes, my dd will hear this stuff, but does it have to be out in a family type affair, where there are not only children but elders in attendence??

It doesn't bother me , it's not an insult. I hear kids say much worse things than this.
My kids don't say it often at all , but if they did it wouldn't bother me .

Just a little story on Kids Saying the g word....
My son, when he first walked on to Main St. USA, WDW at age 4 exclaimed to all the world... "Oh My G.. I can't believe we are actually Here on Main St. USA"
I don't think anyone took offense to it. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, most of the other guests around us were amused and/or just smiling at him and I both. I had no one give me any disapproving looks. But.. I did look apologetic to those around me.. just in case he offended any of the other guests christian sensibilitites.
The only disapproving look that I can remember was the one I gave my mother, raised High Anglican, who says OMG at least fifty times a day.

I agree 100%, and if anyone says it, I politely ask them not to use that phrase in our house.

That's how I see it, too. It's different from cussing - certain words fit certain situations and I do occasionally "cuss" . But I can't say God's name flippantly. And I have found that the more I am exposed to people using OMG as a common emotional expression, the more I feel tempted to use it myself .

Me too Lorix. I guess I 'll try to work on it as I would not want to offend My Lord! I never really thought of it as taking his name in vain but as I say it more of a recongnition to the fact that I believe!

I really have no opjectin to her saying it, to me it is not a wrong thing to say, just a phrase and to me there is nothing wrong with saying it.

I never new it was a bad thing to say. Didn't anyone grow up in the 80's? Like OMG?

There is no one more religious than my 97 year old Grandmother and she says it all the time. I guess I just don't see it as disrespectful.

Oh My God, same here. My grandmother used to say it all the time too and she was very religious. I've always used it a figure of speech and never heard of someone being offended by it till now. Oh well.

Yes, I kind of look at it as a mini-prayer. I would consider it wrong to say it in combination with the d-word. It sounds like one is giving orders to the Lord.

I don't mind hearing it and I say it myself. I just don't like to constantly hear it. It gets annoying. I know some people who preface every sentence they say with OMG! ugh. Save it for something you are truly amazed or surprised about.

Same here. My grandmother who passed last year at age 86, used OMG all the time. She was very religious, went to church, read her bible every day and so on. We were always allowed to say OMG when we were growing up but I rarely ever did. I liked gosh better so I used that. It never occured to me nor does it now to not say it out of respect for anyone else. There are plenty worse things to say. I do ask my kids to say gosh also as it just sounds nicer. I don't see a problem with anyone using it however they like.

I think what bothers me is when I hear it accentuated and dragged out in an irritatingly way, like in OOOHHH MMMYYYY GGGOOODDDD. Same with that goofy HEELLLOOOOOO. UGH!!

I can't remember where i heard it, but there was discussion of a similar topic........Does it bother you to hear different forms of a curse word. Example...*darn* instead of the other word. Basically they MEAN the curse word. Anyway, someone said they were offended by the word GEEZ. I was amazed that to them, it was a shortened form of Jesus. Never really thought about it.
