kids reading disorders

I don't want him "labeled", I just want to get him the help that he needs...it is so upsetting to see him do so well at everyting else and yet struggle in this area...It is hard...has anyone had to deal with a child doing well in all other subjects and they try not to pass them to the next grade because of one area READING...I am so afraid that they are going to try to make him repeat the third grade and he doesn't need that...

Are you in Texas? I'm guessing so because you mention TEKS. You do need the "label" to get him the help he needs. Nothing will happen without a label. It is not a bad thing, you have to know what the issue is to fix it. Diagnosis is the first step.

Yes, I am in Texas, thank you too...I will have them go ahead and do more testing on him and get him a tutor...does anyone have any ideas about how to get a tutor or a tutoring center like Sullivan????

I would probably want to find someone with their own classroom who would like a side job.

Maybe put an ad on Craigslist for a 1st or 2nd grade teacher who could tutor your child (they teach phonics every day and would probably be able to use materials from their class with your child).

An ad in a community paper, or ask some of the teachers in your son's school for suggestions. Sometimes they know a teacher on maternity leave or retired who'd like a side job.

Check local colleges too.

I'm not familiar with Sullivan, but if it's like Huntington Learning Center or Sylvan, I've found they're really pricey and often not worth it.

The Scottish Rite Learning centers test for learning issues free. There is one in Dallas and looks like also one in Austin. It takes about 6mths to get evaluated and you have to have your Dr sign a referral but they have an excellent testing program.

Schools do tend to test only for a Learning Disability and most children with Dyslexia don't qualify. With my DD I wanted to have her moved into the Dyslexia program our school district offers. Since she already received services through Special Ed with the LD diagnosis I couldn't get the school to move as quickly as I wanted. The Scottish Rite testing gave me the what I needed to get the services and it has really helped her.

There are modifications and other things that can be used with the TEKS; the school can help you. I know the diagnosticians and teachers have been very helpful to get the right things in place for my DD in regards to the testing and promotion rules.
