I had the gastric bypass and have a medical card from the Dr. stating this. I thought I read that the buffets will charge me the kids price for a buffet. What buffets will do this?
I suppose if I got a QS meal (even if I could only eat a kids meal) I would have to use an adult QS Credit?
Anyone that had the surgery have any suggestions?

I am not sure but I have heard they still charge the adult prices at the buffets regardless of the Drs note .I know at TS restaurants they will adjust for childs portions, and at CS but the buffets I think still charge full price.

I have always read that buffets you will still be charged adult pricing. There are some adults who only eat very little (with and without surgery) and they charge all adults the same.

The answer to this is "It depends on the normal policy in that location, as well as the CM who is the server or the manager on duty". The official Disney policy is everyone pays full price. Most buffets, if you let them know in advance, will probably only charge the child price but don't quote me on this.

Full service or Counter Service you only get charged for what is ordered.

And if you are on any variation of DDP you do use an adult credit no matter what is ordered (unless you are with a 9yo who eats from the adult menu while you are odering from the child menu).

Personally, I feel all adults should pay the adult price. There are many different reasons why a person may only eat a small amount at a buffet. Remember a petite 10 year old girl is paying the same price as a grown adult man and probably eating 1/4 as much if that. A gastric bypass person might end up eating the same amount as that 10 year old, depending on how far out they are from their surgery.

Just saying I think an adult should pay the adult price regardless of the amount they eat. Otherwise Disney is opening themselves up to people bringing doctors notes for all different medical conditions that may affect their eating habits at buffets.

I agree 100%!!

Having WLS myself, I agree. I believe when you go to any restaurant you are paying for the entire experience more than you are paying for the food. No matter how much I eat, I'm getting the same service and ambience, and if there are leftovers, I take them home. The only bad thing about dining at Disney is that it's not usually convienient to take home leftovers.

Thank you for saying this. I keep seeing threads about gastric bypass and children's prices, and I keep thinking exactly what you said above. I have been to several buffets where I was just not hungry and didn't eat much. I would never have asked for a discount. Heck, I'm vegetarian, so I'm pretty sure I don't get my money's worth anyway, and it would never even occur to me to ask about a discount. Your point about the 10 year old girl is right on the money (no pun intended).

As an aside, I would not think that the DDP would be a very good value for a recent gastric bypass patient.

I agree. I have a small appetite and eat less than my 10 year old son. I eat, I pay. That's life.

1) I think
. . . adults should pay adult prices
. . . kids should pay kid prices
2) By-pass or no by-pass.
3) Disney does not know how many times you might hit the buffet table.
4) No will they start to track your movements.
5) Besides, there are other costs to cover
. . . general overhead
. . . building overhead
. . . manpower overhead
. . . manpower direct labor

Thank you everyone for sharing your opinions in a respectful manner, it is very much appreciated! :thumbsup2

Glad to hear I'm not alone in my thoughts. I used the 10 year old girl example because that is exactly what I am dealing with on our upcoming trip. My DD will just turn 10 shortly before our trip and she is petite, the size of an average 8 year old at most. She eats like a bird. It kills me to think I'll have to pay the adult price for her at buffets. If they ask her age, of course we'll be honest but I'm hoping that since she looks younger, they will just assume she is a child's price.

It appears you are on the dining plan. Are you asking if WDW will permit you to purchase a child's dining plan?

You would have to probably call CRO and ask. The purchase of dining credits is not handled at the resort or at the restaurants - your dining plan must be purchased before you arrive. But I'd think it likely that you would be required to purchase an adult dining plan.

Also, WLS is no guarantee of ending up a small eater. My brother in law had a lap band - and now it just takes him three hours to eat as much as he ever did (and no, he hasn't lost weight). He still managed to out eat everyone else at the buffets when we went.

Buffets can be a great bargain - but for some families you are just better off eating a regular table service meal.

I had my surgery 27 May 2008 and we were at WDW in July 2008, so I was very restricted in what I could eat and how much. I even brought my own breakfast food, since the others in our party would do pastries for breakfast. I used my bypass card at CM for dinner, which consisted of about six boiled shrimp, a piece of salmon, and maybe some grilled chicken, all eaten off a salad plate. We went to Trails End for breakfast on our way out and again I used my card and I only had the equivalent of two scrambled eggs. Portions indicative of a child. Since we did all meals OOP, it was nice having a small concession for a couple of meals.

We are returning in June 2009 and the three of us are on DDP, all as adults. I will be planning carefully for fish entrees at our TS choices and probably having to get desserts "to go" for DW and DD.

It sounds like you may be on the dining plan, if so, you will purchase the adult plan and adult credits will be deducted at each meal.

I don't know the answer but 2 trips ago we went to CM on a morning that I had been up all night with a stomach bug. I did not eat or drink anything but still went to enjoy watching my kids enjoy themselves. We are not rich people but it was still worth the money to see my kids having fun!
