just to let everyone know that i have just being informed by going places that kids will not be accepted by us passport control on a family passport , all children from immediate effect must have there own passport ,no family passports accepted
I am travelling in just under 4 weeks time and was phoned by someone at Virgin on 30th June to advise me that although this new rule should be from October 1st they have had 3 families turned away by the US authorities in the last couple of weeks even though the passports that the children were on were in date-when I questioned this the girl at Virgin told me that although the passports should have been accepted the US authorities can basically do what they like. I decided that I was not willing to take a chance on being turned away so I applied for my passport to be amended and get my 2 girls their own passports via the post office on 30th June - we received them back this Thursday 10th July. The total cost was 48.00 - 19.00 each for their passports and a 5.00 charge for the PO to check and send them off. I hope this helps someone as I personally would'nt take the chance of travelling all the way to US to possibly be turned away
hi katies dad
couldn't you go to your nearest passport office and get them done there and then,i have my forms ready to get my kids their own and saw that you can make an appt and you will get them that day
hope this helps rather be safe than sorry
I read the above threads and panicked. We are going away onFriday 18th July. I rang the passport office wo were not helpful and said even with an appointment they would send the passport out in the post as it is a 7 day turnaround. PANICKED further so rang US immigration (Margaret) who said it was not in effect until October 1st but to ring the airline to make sure they were still issuing visa waivers. Rang BA who stated it was 1st October they had had no problems, yes still doing visa waivers and not to panic. I mentioned Virgin's tel call to a NatalieD BA suggested either something wrong with their passport or the child was travelling without the named adult on the passport (they had heard of this). So I leave on Friday I will still try to get my son his own passport before we go but fingers crossed. This has really put a dampener on my single digit dance.

Donna, I'm sure everything will be OK. As a safeguard, I'd print out that info from the US Embassy and be armed with the facts. If you encounter a problem, keep your cool and start quoting policy and dates.
Thanks Steph I have done as you said and printed off the information you recommended. I rang the passport office again and spoke to a different man who reassured me and said dont PANIC. I feel better or at least I will after passing through immigration on Friday
Thanks again Donna
I printed out the information on the UKPA website and from the US embassy site the links are above on ybird's post (thanks ybird). I am hoping that Iwill not need them. With regard to getting a passport for my son I cannot do this as he his classe as afirst time application which takes a minimum of a week to proces so I have no choice but to travel with him on my passport.
Here's hoping Donna
We've just got back - both our daughters are on my passport and we had no problems at all! In fact, despite all we'd heard about getting through Orlando International, it was quicker than getting through Gatwick!
We have just got passports for our 2 DDs. We had the applications checked at the Post Office and we had the passports within 10 days (Peterborough passport office).
