I'm kid-sized, under 5 feet. It's tough. I usually position myself behind a stroller or trash can.

I don't see how any decent human being thinks it is ok to put kids on shoulders. This is so rude and disrespectful.

Because if done with consideration, it is OK and it is not rude or disrespectful. I don't do it now, because my kids are too old, but when they were 3, 4, 5, I did. We would make sure that we were in a spot where someone wasn't going to be right behind us, typically up against one of the fences/railings. Really never posed an issue. Sure, if you walk into the middle of an open area that's already crowded and throw a kid up on your shoulders that's inconsiderate to some degree, but it can be done respectfully. Frankly, I find this no different than parents who are "snowflakes" themselves and want to push their way into a crowd to get a "good" spot at the very last second. Almost inevitably, the husband/boyfriend will be 6'4" and they'll stand right in front of a family with children, or even an adult who is only 5'2". Same concept.

I am also in the travel sized group. If a show or parade is important to me I make sure to get there extra early and hold my spot, there will always be someone trying to squeeze in front of you, put kids up, extend their arm and record the whole thing, so I'm always on the curb and close to the stage.
Closing this thread now because some posters have already given some valuable tips
