Kids meals... sides?

I've been looking at the kids meals menus and see that several say "choice of sides" as part of the meal. Does this mean the child can choose from any of the sides on the menu, or do the mean fries? Specifically looking at Columbia Harbor House, my little guy would want the shrimp skewer with either green beans or clam chowder... but will they make him get fries (which he does not like and won't eat... I know, weird kid, but easy to feed, usually)?

I thought there were regular sides and kids sides. But I just checked the online menu for CHH only has one "Sides" section. So I would think those are the choices.

Maybe you can try to mobile order something right now, and see what it tells you?

I think most if not all kids meals offer an alternative to fries. Even if you have to order two of the same sides (we did this on a few occasions and got 2 mandarin oranges or 2 packs of apple slices)

For kids' meals includes small yogurt smoothie and applesauce and choice of low-fat milk or small bottled water. Small apple juice, small chocolate milk, french fries or cookie substituted upon request.

^That’s what AllEars says. Sounds like small yogurt drink and applesauce come standard, with a choice of small water or low-fat milk. But I’m not sure how the second part works, if you can substitute each of 3 standard items… like can you get 3 sides of french fries if you give up the standard 3 sides?

Rice, green beans or French fries (choose two) are the options shown when mobile ordering the shrimp skewer kid’s meal. Also a choice of beverage.

That's what I do-not everyone offers the same choices of sides-apple slices, go-gurt, grapes, cookie, cuties mandarin are all some of the things I've seen offered at different places. But pretending to mobile order, then backing out, is the only way I know to find out specifically.

Thanks for checking. I don't have a cell phone (I know, I know) so I appreciate your efforts on my behalf! The 8 year old will be happy with the green beans (but happier with the clam chowder- oh well!).

Go into the app and attempt to place the order. It will show you the side options. Sometimes there will be a “substitution+” button , tap that and usually it is fries but could be something else depends. The drinks usually have several options as well. Each QS place seems to vary just a bit so I try to check out menus before each trip.

The shrimp from CHH comes with rice and green beans. One of my fav QS meals. 👍

I don't think it's weird at all. I raised a couple who would prefer the grapes and carrot sticks to fries. Most kids meals were a waste for us. They would eat the chicken fingers sometimes but that gets old real fast.

Most restaurants offer crappy cheap food for kids and get away with it because you'll only be there once. But you can't live that way for a week and thankfully wdw has always offered alternatives for kids. The sides vary by location but there are always healthy alternatives. Many of them are prepackaged so if they don't want to eat them with their meal you can save them as a snack for later...those grapes and apple slices have been very convenient for taking to the parks.

On the app there is a choice of 3 sides:green beans, rice or FF and you must choose 2 sides.

I haven’t been able to get clam chowder as a side with an adult meal let alone a kids meal. We were lucky last trip and the cashier over rode sides and let one of us have hush puppies as a side which is usually not allowed.

At resorts we have been able to sub Bacon and Potato barrels from the included sausage and grapes with child mickey waffles. Not sure about all park CS but if it is an included side on another meal it is usually an option. My son would never get fries (his choice we were fine with fries) years ago when we ordered kids meals he would ask for something else and they always allowed. I recall a burger with broccoli somewhere although I think that was a TS.

There is almost always an alternative to fries. I've seen Cuties, apple slices, yogurt, and veggie sticks at different quick service restaurants. For table service, they seem to get a few options like rice, veggies, mashed potatoes, and fruit.

My kid doesn't eat fries either. I wish he did because life would be so much easier. Ha! CHH was one of our go-to places to eat on our trip earlier this year. He loved the salmon, rice, and green beans.

CHH actually has decent side options for kids. At a lot of places, your choices are basically a cuties orange or fries.

I do remember at the QS place in the America Pavilion, the kids meal came with watermelon (I ordered it for myself. Ha!)

That is with some meals and other meals allow you to pick TWO sides from a list. Sometimes it is several and sometimes it is only two options ... be sure to look for a "Substitutions" below the options that gives you more items specific to that kids meal. See below you can pick 2 of the 3.

I did find yesterday that there were more options at Regal Eagle than on the app, so that is something to consider. We did get kids meals there.

This is Columbia Harbor with Kids Shrimp options.

I miss the days when, instead of a kids menu (or maybe in addition to?), Disney offered half-portions of their regular menu items. They charged half-price plus $1. My daughter and nieces LOVED that.
