Kids meal age limit

I know all of the Disney restaurant kids meals say for kids 9 and under. I'm wondering how strictly they stick to that if not using the dining plan. I have an 11 year old, but she definitely cannot eat anywhere near the adult portion that most Disney restaurants serve. I would hate to repeatedly have to throw away a ton of food just because she has to order from the adult menu.

They are not strict. However, any buffet or family-style meals she will pay by age, not appetite.

My next trip to Disney will be with a now 12 y/o. She no longer has an interest in a chicken nuggets and burger daily diet and I'm thankful for her ability to move on.
She can tuck into an adult menu with gusto (as long as it doesn't include her childish bugaboo, cheese. I don't understand what that's about but will wait for her to outgrow it) and we have no problem taking any leftovers back to the room and placed in the fridge.

No idea if you have interest in a buffet venue or not but they seem to be strict in adhering to Disney's age limits.

Not buffet and paying OOP? I doubt anyone cares as much. If a specific venue does.......just order appetizers would be my advice.

Appetizers is a good idea. My 11 year old is an adventurous eater, and I am glad to see something more than chicken nuggets and pizza on the kids menus now. As I was looking this evening I saw a kids meal with salmon, one of her all times favorites.

FWIW, I *developed* that issue while pregnant and it hasn't yet let go. It's not a total ban on cheese, but if it's supposed to be melted and it's not, it'll ruin my meal entirely. Maybe possibly don't hold your breath that it'll go away.

She's twelve, not lactose intolerant, eats cheese just fine if it's on a margherita pizza (melted?) but thinks even Nonnie's homemade mac + cheese isn't worthy. Weirdest child in the USA but I love her fine.

Counter service places don't care at all. At buffets and AYCE places, they do charge by age (try 30something for a picynteen to eat some bacon and hash browns). Some of the sit down places will let older people order kid sized meals. Other places will offer adult sized versions of the "kid" foods. We have ha the best luck with just sharing one adult plate.
