Kids getting teeth pulled - help!

Yeah? And mine said TAKE THE PILL. We aren;'t talking about sedating the kid like Michael Jackson! .25 of Xanax is not going to cause a drop in blood pressure...she won't get herself worked up enough to do it.

You and I will have to agree to disagree. And it seems the OP's dentist has been down this road before and agrees with me.

:confused3

OK, but all my doctors told me no way. Maybe it is because she has vasovagal syncope?

What if the OP's dd has that? She seems undiagnosed to me.

It does not matter. The "passing out" is not gently falling to floor and then waking up.

It looks like a seizure. Jaws are cletched and they are not breathing and turning blue.

You DO NOT want to run the risk of her taking the meds and then she passes out and then cannot regain consciousness.

Heck my ortho and ped told me under no circumstances can she have anxiety meds. I asked both of them.

She has only passed out once in her life - many years ago. I was bringing her over to a friends house and we just arrived. I was talking with her friends Mom who was vividly describing this motobike accident where the boy broke his leg - very disturbing details. well, all of a sudden DD softly fell to the ground. I couldn't believe it. She came right to but she said after it was everything the Mom was describing and she felt her vision getting worse and bam. Needless to say, I took her right home;)

At the doctors office I saw the color leave her face and lips but she never passed out. She laid down and was good in about 2 minutes.

That is up to you. I know my dd can't have it because they only way she is not going to pass out is if she is put under.

And yes she had oral surgery a few months ago and passed out. Scared the crap out me and the nurse who was poo-pooing her.

My dd has passed out many times.

I am just relating to you what I know and what my doc's have told me.

Thankfully we have an ortho who understands her condition.

Oh and always lay down to get shots or blood drawn. And be hydrated beforehand. It helps.

:lmao: And you base this "diagnosis" on...what...your gut feelings? The kid PASSED OUT once in her life (read below)

Get your daughter the pill.

You might think this is so funny, but I don't think it is. Getting medical stuff done when you have severe anxiety is not funny.:guilty:

Thanks again everyone for your replies! I appreciate all your views.

I firmly believe nothing is wrong other than her working herself up.

My poor DH is kind of the same - hates to have blood drawn. Was in the ER years and years ago and they had to take blood. The jerk young kid comes in making all these comments about sticking him to suck out some blood. Sure as *%&^ poor DH passes out. The kid felt like crap and I said hopefully you learned your lesson. DH lost his kidney due to cancer when he was 5 years old so he always attributed his fear of passing out at doctors from all the stuff he had to deal with when he was really young.

 I know. I suffer from anxiety myself. If it weren't for the Xanax, some days would be nightmares. Dentist anxiety is a particularly bad one for me. If I had an underlying condition like your DD, it would be so much harder.

I ALWAYS get worked up for any kind of procedure... dentistry work, shots, blood taken, you name it. I just had my wisdom teeth out a few months ago and was pretty nervous about it. I take anti-anxiety stuff when I fly and I took one the night before my wisdom teeth surgery... wouldn't have been able to sleep without it. Now I've never passed out, but have come close to it (vision getting blurry/dark during blood work for example). I was ALWAYS given nitrous oxide for dentistry work as a teenager, and they also used it for my wisdom tooth surgery. It was amazing seeing my numbers when they hooked me up to the machines for my wisdom teeth... my heart rate was out of control! I would have been more worked up if they weren't giving me nitrous oxide... it really helps, and I think makes the whole process (emotionally and physically!) a lot easier. I suggest you talk to your DD's dentist and see what they say, and specifically ask relating to her medical history.

I had seven teeth pulled when I was a little younger than the OP's daughter - I worked myself up into such a state I thought I would throw up. My dentist gave me what he called laughing gas, although I don't know what it actually is called - I put a mask like an oxygen mask over my face and breathed it in throughout the entire procedure. It worked almost instantly, I felt fine. It was still a weird experience - hearing the cracking and knowing what was going on wasn't too pleasant but the gas made me feel much better.

Nitrous oxide! It works wonders :thumbsup2

It is terrible. However she has has some therapy and she can pretty much handle things now. However, sometimes you get ahold of someone who just will not listen because she is a kid.

She does take Lexapro daily, only 5mg.

She has vasovagal syncope and cannot take ANY sedation meds if she is in danger of passing out.

I was just passing that onto the OP because it is something you should be aware of.

OP hopefully your dd gets thru this OK! Good Luck.:yay:

When I talked to the dentist office today they didn't offer that as an option, only calling in one sedation pill which she can take before she comes to her appt.

Can't wait until Tuesday is over with ;)

2 of my kids had teeth pulled this summer. It was easy peasy but they weren't too anxious about it. The Dr gave them the shot, waited for about 10 minutes and then pulled the teeth. It literally took him seconds to pull the teeth. I would get the pill for your dd. I used to have anxiety before the dentist and even now, although I'm ok for a routine visit/filling, if I had to have major work done I would need a pill! Good luck to your dd!

As a professional "medical-passer-outer" myself, I have never passed out like what you are describing. At the dentist I have the nitrous oxide gas, and on occasion have had a pre-appointment medication for calming.

MM, since your DD has a condition other than the usual passing out, your advice MAY not apply to the OP. OP should ask her doctor about it but not be afraid to try something the dr recommends.

After horribly suffering through childhood with that anxiety, I see absolutely no reason to suffer like that if there is something you can safely take to make it better. There is absolutely no purpose to it.

I am so glad you posted this. I just got off the phone with the dentist office to let them know about how worried she is and they said they would call in a pill for her to take before. I told them I didn't think I would give it to her and I'm glad to read what you wrote. Now I know not to. Makes me mad they don't know that!
Call your daughter's doctor. Never take medical advice from internet strangers.

Yes they label it vasovagal syncope. Believe me she has had 2 echo's and a EEG plus other tests to make sure that it was that condition.

I agree that the OP's dd will probably be fine.

However I don't think it is wrong to share what I know about sedation and passing out. It is note worthy.

Certainly ask your reg. doctor. :thumbsup2

I asked all her doctors and they said NO sedation before she gets her braces. So we are going to have to pull out all the stops. One being the IPOD and maybe a timer where she can countdown the time for the mold for her teeth.

Not sure how she is going to handle the pain. The ortho I picked seems knowlegable about her condition and is going to work with her.

My daughter had 7 baby teeth pulled at one time last year and really it was not bad (and that is HER saying it!). They numbed her up a bit before giving her the novacain shot and after that she didn't feel anything. They gave her what she thought was sweet air but it was really just the little mask with air and she was just fine. She has to go have 2 adult teeth pulled in Jan.- won't be as easy but I am not making a big deal out of it when we talk about it so hopefully she won't stress over it.

I'm 14 and I've had a tooth pulled. I think I was twelve. I had no problem. To be honest, I really didn't even know when he actually pulled it out. But, I aleady enjoyed the dentist, so. :confused3
