I had a friend come over today and I spent three hours learning how to use my machine!!! Well, actually we spent about 30 minutes oiling, cleaning and trying to thread it... then the rest of the time I spent learning how to do different stitches!! I figure, if I can serge, then by golly I can sew!!! I'm tired of doing everything by hand!

So, tomorrow someone in this house is getting a twirly skirt! There'll be no stopping me now!

I had wanted to make my DD a shirt with a strip of movie film on, but I'm not that creative

Head over to the Creative DISigns board, those gals have some wonderful stuff that you could print out then iron onto a shirt!! Pat has some on her thread, pixiedust_in_ak posted one of Pat's film strip designs a few posts back. Is that what you're looking for?

In a way earlier post (no idea where) Castle Creations told how to do it using elastic thread in the bobbin. I have not been able to find elastic thread. The way she described it sounded pretty easy. Maybe PM her?

Hi...You can find the elastic thread in any fabric store. I'm not sure if walmart sells it. It's usually near the embroidery thread on a long spool.

I just bought elastic thread at Joann's. It was hanging on the notions wall in a red and white package. It is made by "Stretchrite". Hope this helps someone.

I've been watching this thread for awhile now and you girls inspired me to take a try at making something for dd instead of spending my money on an expensive custom. I bought some overalls for $2 at the thrift store. I got my very slim 7 year old some sz 4 overalls and they fit her like caprialls. Then I went to the craft store and picked up a few other things for about $14.

It's not much compared to a lot of you guys super cute stuff, but I'm pretty proud of how these came out. I am VERY creatively challenged, so for me this was a big stretch.

The backs are slightly different. DD5 has straps that cross in the back and DD3 has ties. It's my first attempt at shirring (is that what it's called?), meaning I made the back with elastic so it's stretchy.

Do you mean that you used the elastic thread in the bobbin like CastleCreations (I think) gave instructions....or did you actually sew on strips of elastic (which was what I thought people did, lol.....I knew there was elastic thread, but didn't know you could use it in a bobbin, lol).

I just bought some at Walmart. But. like others have said, it's by the elastic, not the thread! It was .81 at Walmart for 30 yards. Of course, I found this after I bought it at Joanne's for twice the price! (I figured I could always use more though!)

Yes, I used the elastic thread in the bobbin and plain white thread for the top part of the stitch. I hope that makes sense. I was so nervous, but it's easy! And fun!

I think they turned out very cute. I did the same thing. I found a denim jumper at a thrift shop for $1 and embellished it. I'm almost done and will post pics soon. It is a great way to practice all this stuff.

BTW, I wanted to add that I love how many people this thread has inspired to start posting and stop lurking. It has inspired me to get back to my machine and try something new.

Oh, and about the shirring. I've read that you use the elastic thread in the bobbin and make you stitch longer than you usually do (most sites I have seen recommend a 4), then you stitch along your lines. When you're done, get your iron out and steam the fabric. (Don't actually touch the fabric with the iron. Just pump a lot of steam on it.) The steam will cause the fabric to draw up. The instructions said to let the fabric rest overnight, so I don't know what would happen if you use it right away. They also say if using a pattern that does not call for shirring to use a length (although I guess it'd be a width of fabric 3 or 4 times as long as what's needed, shir first, then cut out your pattern. Now, I haven't tried these instructions. I've decided I'm going to finish the the projects I have already started before starting a new one, but this is next on my list of things to try. Hope these help someone.

Same here!! Right now I have in the works; 5 pillowcase dresses, one circle skirt and one patchwork twirly skirt!! Not to mention all of the applique stuff that I've ironed on but not stitched down yet! Every time I see something new, I want to try it. I have to stop and just finish everything I've got going. And now that I know how to use my machine, maybe it won't take me too long!!

Those of you who have bought custom jewelry on ebay for your dds, could you PM me your favorite seller? I need to find Ariel, Nemo, Jasmine & Cinderella, but I'm having a hard time with the searching on there.

Stunning!~ You could put this underneath one of your custom skirts too, and make it super full! How many yards of tulle did you need?

I would love to do it in Halloween colors, black and purple and orange. Trying to think ahead!

Oh gosh if it only takes ten minutes, I could make a red white and blue one!!! Can you share how you did this, or is it copy righted?

I've made some of these too! I love 'em and they're so easy. It actually took longer to strip & cut the tulle than it did to put it together. I like how yours are longer. I did mine short to wear over leggings.

I would like to offer you all a challenge:

We all have outfits with Minnie dots and Mickey shapes and printed fabrics. Everyone has shown some really great stuff...except for me because I haven't learned how to post yet. (LAZY!)

Now, what about an outfit for MGM? This so far for me is the hardest park to theme an outfit around. I loved someone's Rock n Roller coaster outfit...very cute. But what about one that is just themed on the park? Like maybe a movie star outfit? Any ideas? I would like to hear from you all to get my imagination going.

Okay, I'm going to try this one more time. Thanks for the great help I received in trying to figure out how to post pictures in the correct size. Here is a picture of my DD last year at MGM. The outfit has Minnie with star sunglasses on it so she looks like a movie star. One fabric used on the skirt looks like black and white film strips. Hopefully, this will work this time!
