hi! think i pm'd all who asked. there have been several posts about twirl skirts. lady rob gave me the ebay id of a seller who does adorable ones for reasonable price (if youre afraid to attempt one or need one quick! i ordered one and got it 3 days later!) anyway, in my ongoing search to make things VERY simple, i stumbled upon some more directions for a twirl skirt (aka tiered twirl skirt). these directions were the easiest to me because the lady didnt use a lot of #s to explain the steps. i always get confused with "measure this, add this seam allowance, multiply by this, measure again......blah blah"

i just get lost because im a newbie sewer and get overloaded. truth be told im actually a visual learner and woudl do better if i could watch someone do it and take notes.....

well, here is the info i stumbled upon. shes gives a link to another kind of skirt, but the one i made was the tiered twirl skirt....

Decide how long you would like the skirt to be and divide this number by 3. Add 1 inch for seam allowance. This will be how wide your strips should be.

Measure the child waist. Multiply this number by 2 and add 6 inches. This will be how long your first strip should be. (For my 4 year old I make it 48 inches long)

The second strip should be twice as long as the first strip. (For my 4 year old I make it 96 inches long)

The bottom strip should be twice as long as strip 2. (For my 4 year old I make it 192 inches long)

Close each strip into a circle.
Gather bottom strip on one side and sew to strip 2. Gather strip 2 and sew to strip one. Create a casing across the top and pt in your elastic and hem the bottom.

Has anyone ever made bandana clothing? I have heard it is very easy and cute. Thought about doing a pirate one for my DD and need instructions.

I saw a Mickey zebra one on ebay, it only sold for $16 I think. I would love to make a pirate one. Let me know if you figure out how!!

You ladies are just amazing. Like so many other you too have inspired me to think about starting to sew. I have 0 experiance with this but plan to attempt a pillowcase dress, a twirl skirt, and maybe those cute shorts/skirt with the ribbon on the ends (if I can get easy enough directions). If anything turns out sucessful then I will post pics. Thanks for the inspirartion!

Yeah, me too. I found some really cute ones at Wal-Mart: red with big white Minnie dots! Wasn't sure what I'd do with them, but bought all 4 anyway :rotfl: I think I'll need more though if it's to be something for my 7 y/o- guess I could do something for my 4 y/o neice that's going in Oct.

By the way... I am addicted to this thread!!! I've never seen more clever/creative ladies!!! My dining room table is a mess now with all kinds of 'custom' projects! Patiently waiting for DH to get my sewing/scrapbooking room complete in the basement... ahhhhh- my own oasis!!!

Here is DD's outfit for Animal Kingdom. She is almost eight.
I was thinking of putting a black mickey on the bodice though.

Nice job, Liz. Your dd looks thrilled with it as well. (Is there an applause smiley?)

Anyway, I took my girls to WDW for a quick trip before our blackout dates start. We stayed 1 night and went to MK the first day and MK and Epcot yesterday before coming home. I paid very close attention to what kiddos were wearing. I saw a few girls dressed in the princess outfits that Disney sells. (Belle seemed to be the most popular. And by a good amount, too.) I also saw lots of children wearing the personalized shirts you can by on eBay. (You know the ones with the Mickey/Minnie head and the child's name embroidered in the Disney font.) I even saw a few of these with just the child's name on it and nothing else. I also saw quite a few ribbon shirts. The plain white shirts were in embellished with red ribbon with white dots and black ribbon with white dots -- and of course, Mickey/Minnie heads. I did not see any of the boutique outfits I've seen on eBay these past few months, and I didn't see overalls or any handmade princess outfits either. It was all Minnie. Of course, this was just my observations and not scientific in any way whatsoever. However, I must ask. Are the princesses waning in popularity? Or is it just easier to make the mouse ears appliques and that's why everyone was wearing those? Hmmmm........

It is much easier to just do the mickey ears! I have done both and several other characters and by far mickey heads are easier.

I have a friend that hunted down the remaining Robert Kaufman Giant dot fabric in red. She bought this directly fron the manufacturer and there is no more so it is VHTF!!! PM if anyone needs any as she is selling what she doesn't need.
It is just like the orange fabric on this skirt....

Hancock's Fabric is carrying the Minnie Dot fabric again. I bought 8 yards yesterday, and there was a re-order # on the bolt. :)

Here's a site that's selling the giant red and white for only $4.98/yard!!:

I was on a waitlist for it and had it shipped out to me before the wait list ending period.

Hope this helps someone!

Great find! I am going to try and recreate graciegirl's skirt in Minnie's colors. I hope it comes in stock soon!

LadyRob & everyone else,
I believe that fabric is different then the fabric used in the skirt my girls had. I think the $4.98 fabric has dots closer together. My friend does have the same fabric for sale as our skirts though. It is Robert Kaufman designer fabric so great quality... Again PM if anyone is interested....HTH, Sarah

The fabric that is for $4.98 is this exact fabric: (just to give everyone an idea of size and pattern)

Sarah's absolutely right! The dots are closer together and are more "scattered". :)

GracieGirlie let me know about this thread from another one. I don't want to miss a thing so I started from page and I'm not quite 1/2 way through. I already have a bunch of ideas. Someone had a great belt, love the applique hairbow. Never thought to do a Minnie outfit!!

I read earlier that some of you were looking for "inexpensive".... alright, cheap, overalls. Around here, we have resale events about 2 times a year by various orgainzations. Like Mothers of Multiple Births. They get together to do consignment sales. You can usually find clothes for just a few dollars. I've gotten some great deals for the kids, and I look for Disney outfits first. Just thought I'd mention it incase no one has thought to check out this avenue.

I'm also Staples biggest copy customer. If I find a cute picture I like, I can be found out the copy maching enlarging to the size I want, sometimes cut and paste and use for patterns.

I'll post some of my outfits I made for Kirsta on our last trip. Then I have to get back to reading. I love the ideas!!!

Here are the Princess outfits I made for Kirsta on our last trip. She is always asking for a Princess dress to wear, but I hate to have her wear it in the park and sweat all over it in the heat or tear it getting on a ride. So I took a skort and tshirt and used a Simplicity costume pattern to dress them up. She was a hit with the cast members, they'd ask the Princess if that was her summer dress. She thought she was hot stuff.

There a few things I'd do different next time. On the Belle, I wouldn't do the point on the top. I forgot the Kirsta likes to push her shorts and skirts down off her belly. And the Cinderella, I do the flounce on the skirt instead of the top. It just sort of stuck out in the air. MomMom made her a few appliques on the outfits that are from the Disney embroidery machine. The edge of the skirt has a flower design that relates to the Princess.

I think those are my absolute favorites so far. ;) I like the others too..no offense:goodvibes How practical and how cool and comfy looking to wear. great idea.

Does anyone know of a pattern for the twirl skirts, like Simplicity or McCalls, or would I have to look in YCMT? I have never ordered one of their patterns and don't know how easy they are to follow. I just love this thread --really inspiring.

Check in the costume section of the pattern books. They usually have the 50's skirt.
