On the pillowcase dresses, I don't know of anyone that has used an actual pillowcase for this unless the child was younger and the pillowcase was an antique or something. I have only seen regular material be used for these.

I've seen them sewn for years but never made one. My little one's rarely wear dresses unless there's shorts under them. I'm so excited. I'm off to the fabric store today. Yea!! My favorite place!!

Hello all,

I absolutely the pillowcase dresses and soooooooo want to make some for my DD for this summer. Small problem is that I have not a clue how to sew! I just got my SIL's sewing machine thinking I'd play around a little and try to teach myself how to sew (I also have a friend who said she'd help me - but it's a matter of both of us finding the time). The pillowcase dresses *seem* like they'd be pretty easy to make - even for a sewing dummy like me So I'm wondering - could any of you experts give a very simplistic explaination of how to make these? Not using a pillowcase, but regular fabric. Am I asking too much here? Any help would be most welcome and greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

This is how I do all of my stuff! You have to work with it a little bit. I have to "hold" my material so that I can get the stitches super close together. But I never have a problem with it. After you have finished, it will look really puckered up but ironing the material fixes that problem. I just did some Mickey heads yesterday like this. After I finish the bows, I'll take some pics and post them.

I use a satin stitch for my appliques, and to help it not pucker, I iron on fusible stabilizer on the wrong side of the fabric. This way I just have to guide it and not hold it. I also fuse the mickey head on with fusible web, or one of those.
I just got back from JoAnn's with the mother load!!! I won't even tell you how much I spent. Too much, but I got tons of goodies. I can't wait to make a new outfit. I have wanting to make an Animal Kingdom outfit, something different. I have a great idea, and do you know what I did? I bought a third of a yard, too little, to make my outfit. So needless to say....that idea is out. I tried placing my pattern in different ways, but it just won't fit. So now I'm sitting here glaring at my material, that costs 15 dollars a yard.... egad!!! So, back to the drawing board.

I use wonder under to put my appliques on and with t-shirt material it still give a puckered look when I am done. If I don't hold it some, the stitches will be too far apart and wouldn't look as finished.

Hi Amy,
I used to have that problem. But I set my satin stitch on a very tight stitch. I set it on like a 3 or 2. Setting it on 1, it just sews on top of itself. I don't know how people applique so small though. I have mastered circles, but I try to stay with bigger items, and just embroider tiny things like facial features.

Oh yeah, one more thing....I saw the cutest pattern ever. I still can't believe I didn't buy it. It's called Fish Tales. It's to make a mermaid tail. The bodices that come with the pattern are gorgeous, and it also has a pattern for a seashell purse. Too cute, I wish now that I had bought it.

I can't believe I just found this thread. Everyones outfits look so cute! We just planned a last minute trip and we leave in 2 weeks. I would love to make DD an outfit or pillowcase dress for each day of our trip. It looks like I've got a lot of work to do to catch up.

I know that people have mentioned making hairbows - there is a book called Braids, Bows and Bands that has a vairety of hair accessories that you can make with very detailed step-by-step directions and pictures.

I got mine at a church sale but I see there are some inexpensive ones listed on ebay. It originally came with stuff to make the bows but even just the book is a great resource. I think Klutz has a similar book out.
