Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 5

Hi ladies (and Tom). Just wanted to post a pic of my dd's Christmas dress. I need to readjust the buttons b/c the neckline ruffle is way too high. I think we might also go with a shirt that is not red. Pardon the messy hair!!!

IMG_1523.jpg

I have this fab fabric and was not sure what do do! Yours looks great! Awesome job!

Giving myself a shameless bump!

I made a Minnie dress for my DD for halloween and I couldn't find an actual Minnie pattern. I bought a basic dress pattern with bodice and full skirt at Wal-Mart and altered it a little. I cut the neck opening a bit deeper and added wide white bias tape to the neckline and made a band on the sleeves with it as well. I wasn't too picky because it was just a costume so I didn't mind taking a risk with it.

Here's how mine turned out.

Thanks for the kind words, I'm sure it'll all work out fine, I'm just bummin. I'm not sure if they'd wear peasant tops. It briefly crossed my mind when everyone here seemed to be making them....and cursing the pattern! :lmao: After that I figured it was out of my league to try it! It's definitely something I'd be up for, I'll have to ask them.

The Belle fabric is indeed the one with all the princesses on it. Sorry! I can't think that I've ever seen one will just Belle...but will add it to my list of things to watch out for when I shop. That and Grinch fabric. :)

They have tried on the skirts...they are adorable on dd5, but dd9 has her baby belly fat still and they're not so cute on her. I think that's why she doesn't like them. Can't figure why dd5 isn't excited. She's got twirly in her DNA. Thought she'd want to wear them 24/7.

I was thinking I'd sit the girls down and show them some of the things ya'll have made and see what they like. My luck, they'll LOVE Tom's stuff, and LisaZoe's stuff and CastleCreations stuff. Nothing that my poor novice brain can handle. But, I was thinking that maybe some of the vertical stripe tops with jeans they might like. It's a little more grownup ( I think) and they could still wear jeans. I was toying with the idea of deco'ing some jeans, farther up on the top, a little way's up in the inside and putting in a button on the outside and a strip of fabric with a button hole on the inside so that we could wear them as regular jeans if it was chilly, or if it was warm, roll them up and button them and there'd be fabric on both sides. Anyone think that would work? My concerns are that it'll make the jeans too bulky, and two, the jeans will be so bulky that they won't be cooler, they'll end up being hotter!!

I also wonder if they'd like the skirts if they weren't so twirly. Any thoughts on how to cut it down, like how much would you take off? I took tnmom's method of calculation (thank you for that!!), so the top strip is double their waist, the second strip is double that and the third strip is double the second strip. I like the way it looks personally, but how might I begin to cut it down? Bearing in mind, I have serged all the seams. (things that sounded like a good idea at the time.)

If you made it this far, thanks for reading my rambling post. Dh says I talk too much, guess he's probably right.

Maggi

First, Peasant tops are EASY! Don't let us fool you! It's just that YCMT pattern was a bit wonky. Someone posted pictures of how to fix it, you will be fine! I made one starting out using the YCMT pattern and ended up liking the one in the bookmarks better. It's really a very simple top to make. :thumbsup2

Second, have you tried talking to your younger daughter AWAY from the older one? I think you said your girls are close to the same ages as mine 9 1/2 and 4 11/12 (officially today! :( ) I have noticed that Arminda's opinion on an outfit tends to have a great deal to do with Lydia's opinion. Even though Lydia is the most stubborn little red head I've ever met! Talk up that skirt to your 5 year old!

Arminda put on a bit of weight after she turned 8. Heather and I have noticed this trend with girls around that age lately. It's such a hard age for them right now. I wouldn't take a million dollars to go back to being 9!

The first twirl skirt I made wasn't twirly enough for me. I think I used the 1 1/2 times method. It's in the bookmarks, (link in my siggy and in the first post of this thread)this one: http://www.kukyideas.com/journal/2006/07/tiered-skirt-tutorial.html
There are othe skirt patterns there that they might find more grown up too. I am also thinking that the tween skirt from YCMT might be a good idea.

The jeans, Arminda has a pair of lightweight pants that have the little strap with the button on the side. I love them on her, because she is really short (and has that mid-childhood spread thing going on too) so, this makes the pants easy to adjust to her height! If you do that, I would try to find a very lightweight pair of jeans. You could also try it out by either rolling them up, or pinnng them with a strap, to see how they would feel.

You are not long winded, I enjoy your detailed postings! A girl after my own heart!   (you do know about the three banana minimum, right?)

That is adorable! I have that green gingerbread fabric and didn't think it would look good with other colors, but you've proven me wrong! Thank you! I think that would be cute with a white shirt under it! And, in case you didn't get the memo "no apologizing for messy hair" ;) Your dd is adorable!

Actually I made them out of polymer clay and iron on transfer paper. They were sort of a pain, lol. I'll see if I can find the directions to post...I know they're here somewhere...

Ooooh, I have some black clay will that work? PM me when you get those directions, please!!!

That is cute! Messy hair is practically a requirement here. There should also be a clutter pile in the background of each picture. Or a cat. Definitely a fat food wrapper of some sort....;) Its the rules!

Yeah, what she said!!! Oh yeah, and some dust bunnies!

You should have seen how excited she was!!! Hopping up and down yelling, "MAGIC SIZING MAGIC SIZING!!!! Do I need it???? I don't care, I'm buying it!!!!" Giddy she was! She was practically skipping about the store with her find!

Firt of all let me say this "TJ you are multi-quote queen!" princess:

I thought about Heather last night while I was ironing, and wondered if she would think I was crazy. I just love ironing with that stuff, it makes my fabrics easier to manage and it gets out every wrinkle!!! It smells nice too, but not an overwhelming scent. If I run out, I go into withdrawals... sick, I know! I can't remember who first recommended it on here, but :thanks:

Maggi, your skirts are cute! I'm sorry to hear that your girls have changed their minds. I know how that is, dd8 told me the same thing after I made her Halloween skirt. So, now I just make her capris and peasant tops. I think she might actually have a heart attack if I made her a hairbow!!! It happens to all of us sooner or later, maybe you could make skirts for Bob!!! He seems to appreciate your work!

First of all, I think everything you made is wonderful! I love the doggie outfit especially and the ponytail holder and socks are so cute. And that picture of Bob is priceless: yes, he does seem to like his bandana.

About your disappointment, I completely understand. My son has been less than enthused about my sewing and I think he wears some things just to not hurt my feelings. It's the rare moments when I have a hit (Pokemon pjs) where I get really happy. I would let the girls browse the photbucket account and Ebay to see if there something they fall in love with. I try to take my kids fabric shopping too because if they pick it out themselves they are more likely to love it and appreciate the work that goes into creating an outfit from a rectangle of fabric. They both also like to look at the pattern books too (look for "easy" I say!). I think decoupaged jeans is a great place to start.

Good luck. I hope you can find something they love, because you are doing a great job!

Maggi. I love love love this dog outfit! We have a Bassett Hound, and that is what it looks like you have on the shirt. Where oh where did you get that fabric pretty please???

I'm sorry your girls aren't as enthused as you about customs. I think a lot of us here are giving their girls tons of customs now because we realize how quickly it all may fade away! Maybe they will change their minds. I hope so for your sake. I have heard others here comment that their kids will only wear customs in Disney. At least that is something right?

I'm sorry the girls didn't like the skirts. (I personally love them!) My DD once went on an "I hate EVERYTHING you buy me" jag right after I bought her clothes for the summer, adn I soooo wanted to cry. I can't imagine how hard it is when you have made the clothes.

I have no advice on the pants/capris decision, since I am not a capri person. I like your stash, though. it looks easy to manage.

ENJOY yourself!!

Thank you guys for the sweet words. I know it'll all work out in the end, I'm just having a pity party for myself. You guys are so nice to reply about my stuff. I do think I will sit them down, one at a time and have them look through ebay and the photobucket account with me. Heaven knows there's some cuuuute stuff there! I realized too that dd5 cares alot more about her clothes at 5 than dd9 did at that age. I could lay out just about anything for dd9 until she was about 7 and she'd happily wear it. Dd5 has an opinion and everything about her clothing. Imagine that! I think they're also past the age that they don't want to match anymore. Sniff. Take advantage of it while you can! It won't last!!

Camping Griswalds..I loved that fabric too! It's a christmas fabric from JoAnn's. I got it about a week and a half ago so there may still be some left. I used every darn last inch of the four yards I bought or I'd send you some. :) I has all kinds of dogs on it, but also some cats and a bird.
Mostly dogs though, which is why I got it.

Maggi

Jeremy called me at 7:30 to tell me they were on their way!!! :yay: :yay: :yay: Then Rylee got on the phone to tell me she was going to Tennessee to see Nana! I love talking to her on the cell phone because this is how every conversation ends:

Rylee: I love you, Nana
Me: I love you, Rylee
Rylee: Bye Nana
Me: Bye Rylee
Jeremy (in the background): Don't hang up, don't hang up!!!!!!!!! Rylee give me the phone...
click

Then Jeremy calls me back so we can finish our conversation. It's great! She's a very active and intelligent 2yo, she's like the total opposite of Emma. Not that Emma isn't intelligent, but Rylee was asking "why" about everything before her 2nd bday and she can have a full-on conversation about anything. Emma just goes with the flow. This will be so much fun!! I wish they could stay longer than 3 days, but I'll take that over nothing.

And just to keep this on-topic: I finished her Tgiving dress last night and a princess outfit that I'm gonna save for Christmas... maybe. She always struts into my sewing room and says "Nana, will you make me a dress!" She knows I will!

Isn't she a doll!?!
ryleejo2.jpg

 I can't wait!! Just about 9 more hours!!! Now I have to go clean my house and let Emma watch Frosty since she's been asking since she woke up!!!

Just wanted to say THANK YOU for all of your kind comments on my daughter and her outfit! I really like the way this one turned out! Great job everyone on the eye spy bags, I HAVE to make one of these soon! But not now because WE LEAVE FOR DISNEY IN 6 DAYS!   WOOOOHOOOO, WE LEAVE SATURDAY!   So I don't know how much I will be on this week, because of the packing and with Thanksgiving and everything, but I will try to check in a couple times at least! I will post all my pics when I get back, so you girls have fun and I will talk with you when I get back!

If I don't "see" you again, HAVE A WONDERFUL TRIP!!!

That is so cute!!

And after all that, these children of mine have informed me that they don't really like the twirl skirts. They tried to be nice about it, but I'm so sad. Dh says they're just too old for that sort of thing. I'm not mad at them, but I'm so totally bummed, it seems like I've wasted an entire week of sewing and who KNOWS how much planning, for nothing. They both said they'd probably like some deco jeans or capris. Sigh. I just don't think they'll want to wear them every day at Disney and how do I decide what to make...jeans or capris? I can look at the weather a few days before we leave to decide what to pack, but I can't wait that long to decide what to MAKE.
Maggi

I'm so sorry to read that your dd's weren't in love with your skirts. I think they are adorable!! My DD is 8 and very much a tom boy. I have made her a couple things, but she very rarely wears dresses or skirts, especially ones with lots of ruffles. I let her look at the pictures in the DIS photobucket account and sometimes things that I see on ebay (only if I think I could make it -LOL!). She likes some of the twirl tops and really seems to like the halter style tops with the "twirls ruffles". She also like the ruffle jeans and capris and the ribbon capris.

I LOVE the eye-spy bag idea!! I'm going to try to squeeze in some time to make these for the kids to bring on the plane. :cool1:

Here is a like to the JoAnn's coupons for the upcoming holidays in case there is anyone who doesn't receive them.

It happens to all of us sooner or later, maybe you could make skirts for Bob!!! He seems to appreciate your work!

You guys always put me in a good mood, you never fail to make me laugh! Dh says I spend too much time reading these boards (like I'm SUPPOSED to want to watch the basketball game with him? Hey, at least I'm in the same room!) but I disagree. I need it for my daily dose of the giggles!

I thought I could get away with making skirts for dd9, I guess 8 is the magic age where everything changes? Body and tastes? Sigh. Capri's and peasant tops huh? I guess it would hide her tummy....Aacck! Maybe I'd better make one for me! (And shhh...don't tell anyone, I was secretly working on hairbows for both of my girls. I couldn't really make one that looked good so I gave up. I think I'm living in the past.....I hate when my delusions go bad!)

Okay, so peasant top it is. The one in the bookmarks eh? I admit, I've scoured the bookmarks for every twirl skirt I think that's in there (yep, the kukyideas one is the one that I started with, but liked tnmom's calculations better because it seemed more twirly! Who'd have thought THAT would come back to bite me in the butt!) But I haven't looked much past the skirts. I'm off in search of a peasant top. Thanks for pointing me there!

I hadn't thought of actually taking the pants and pinning them to see how we'd like them. Duh. (I need a smilie that smacks it's head on the wall. That's like the third time I could have used it!) I like the Target jeans because they are so thin and a little stretchy too, which is good for "growing room" Ha. I have a pair of them upstairs waiting to be worked on!

I haven't seen the tween skirt. I'll have to check that out....I have issues with store bought skirts these days, they are all so darn short!!! Dd9 is taaalll with loonng legs and the skirts these days barely cover her hiney! Makes me insane! But I guess if I'm making it, I can make it longer, so that might work great! I'll go check it out!

And yes, Bob loves wearing his little bandana, but then again, he's easy to please. A sneaky game of "search the trash" and a quick poop on the floor and he's in heaven.:rotfl2: He's just lucky he's in a good mood all the time and the girls love him.

Thanks again!
Maggi

Last night in my post I forgot to mention a couple of things and I thought about it all last night in bed! SO here I am this morning!

To everyone with babies who have sore bums, I hate that too! My DD2 always seems to have diaper rash! I no more than get it cleared up then two days later it's back with a full blown case! Every once in a while it gets really bad and looks really raw but most of the time I can keep it from getting that way if I change her frequently enough and use about 1/2 inch thick of diaper cream! I used to use stuff called Super Duper Diaper Doo that I was able to get in Kansas City but now I have to order in online here in Texas. The other one that seems to work the next best is A+D Ointment. You would think that would be motivation for me to potty train her, but no siree! I hate potty training! If anyone is a whiz at it, let me know your tips! I'm terrible. I swear my 4 year old is barely potty trained! I don't know what I do wrong but it must be something! She is totally dry at night (which tells me it's not an immature bladder) but still will have occasional accidents during the day when she is too distracted by playing to go. I have no idea what to do about it!

For those of you with teeth problems, ouch! I've got to get my girls to the dentist soon so I may be commiserating with all of you shortly! I have never had a cavity (knock on wood) myself so hopefully my girls will be the same! I can't imagine at this little age getting them to sit still while a dentist works on them. Not fun at all! Hopefully everything will go well!

I don't remember who is having their gallbladder out but ouch! Hopefully everything will go well with the surgery. My SIL just got hers out and she seemed to bounce back really well. She does have some problems eating certain foods but other than that, no problems. I know how you feel about your Mother coming too! Mine will be here tomorrow and I was up till midnight last night cleaning. Still lots to do today too! My house is usually pretty clean but not up to her standards unfortunately! She likes things spotless so I strive for that when she comes but it is stressful! My husband loves it when they walk in the door and the first thing my parents do is go for the vacuum, or mop, etc. I think they're just trying to help but it is insulting! I always clean once a week so it's not that dirty but they vacuum and dust everyday at their house and I just don't have the time for it! Good luck and I hope for a speedy and quick recovery!

If I left anyone out, I'm sorry! Once again, cute stuff everybody!

Back to my laundry now!

I was thinking about this too....our ped gave me a recipe that works really good on diaper rash, I'm sure someone has heard of it, it's vaseline and cornstarch...just mix up a lot of cornstarch in some vaseline and put it on! It's cheap, most of us have it laying around, the ped. even recommended it so it's safe. When dd9 was about 2 and a half, she got a case of salmonella ( I swear it was from the mother's day out program! Even got contacted by the board of health!) oh man the diaper rash was so bad with that, she was crying every time I had to change her. It was heartbreaking. But, one, maybe two days with the vaseline concoction and it was gone! And it didn't sting like some of the diaper rash creams do (even though they say they don't. My baby would have argued otherwise!) I always went back to it when a rash got so bad that one application of Balmex wouldn't cure it.

Can't help much with potty training. Dd9 had the bladder the size of a cow I think and she could hold it for hours. She was a piece of cake. Dd5 was a bit tougher, but it came. The one thing I noticed with both of them is that they didn't potty train until THEY were ready. All of my efforts before that were wasted. Good luck! This is a great and freeing milestone in their lives!! And yours!

How exciting! And she is a doll. I was reading about the people who live far away from their parents/sisters and am glad we live close. My sister lives about 1 hour away and even that seems far!

Thought I would share my latest creation! I wanted something that was a winter theme - but not Christmas so she could wear this one longer. This pattern doesn't come in her size so I had to make some adjustments - but it turned out pretty cute. Thanks for looking! :)

Wow, that is adorable! I love the style of it. I'm making a winter theme instead of Christmas, too. Those Halloween patchwork twirl skirts I made took way too long to only wear them a few times.

I just wanted to say I agree with maggi about the potty training- my ds decided it was time and that was it! We had tried a bunch of times, but until he was ready it just didn't stick!! It was 2 weeks after his 3rd bd and man was I getting heat from my grandma cause he wasn't trained already. But then I just casually asked him (as I had many times before) if he wanted to go potty, He did and I was SO excited and asked if he wanted to wear underpants and we just kept going with it. We put pull ups on him at night just to make sure. We didn't even use them all so I guess I'll have some for dd when she is ready. I heard girls are easier- we'll see!!!

I gotta find some findy things so I can make some eye spy bags-
Love those- Great idea!!!!

Hi all, been lurking on the boards this past week, I kept thinking I'd get on and say hi to ya'll, but never seemed to put aside the time to do it....I have been working like a fiend to make some things, so here goes...

After spending the whole week figuring out the new machine (Brother cs6000i) and the serger (love this thing!), and the hemmer foot (in heaven) and the ruffler foot (this thing totally ROCKS! I second the person who said to check out the free video demo on ycmt...I read it earlier in the week and the sheets to figure out your ruffles are really helpful) I came up with a few things....

IMG_0031.jpg

Maggi I love what you made, but must say I'm especially fond of this skirt.

I'm in the market for a new Sewing Machine, so you say you like your Brother cs6000? Now here's a dumb question, I've been out of sewing for about 12 years, what is a ruffler footer? and what is ycmt?

Thanks!

Thanks! I fell in love with the style too - and had to make it eventhough the pattern only went up to a four. I had to add a second bottom ruffle AND 4 inches to the pants. I only added 2 inches to the dress/top. I do have a couple Christmas outfits made and more to make - but I know what you mean - I like to make them to wear more than a couple of times.

Im in LOVE   with this. I might have to make one. Where did you get that fabric??

Thanks! I bought the fabric at JoAnn. It is really pretty in person with glitter snowflakes!
