I love this and so would my DD who just turned 8! I really like the type of skirt you use for the tutu skirts. Do you use a pattern? Would you share the # if you do?

so now that I have completed my first twirly skirt I feel like a real seamstress and want to try a shirred top out of my mickey swirl fabric.....

a question or two
*if I want to shirr (? one or two r's?) all the way around the top - front and back - do I have to stitch the material into a tube first or can it be flat and then bring the sides together after?

*I have never hand wound a bobbin - are there any rules, like start at the bottom or top of the bobbin - anything I have to do to secure it to start or just wind around it to make it stay initially....

* this may sound dumb, but do I stitch the material right side up (so elastic bobbin thread is on the inside of garmet or right side down so elastic comes out on top?? :confused3

thanks

so here goes...results of my first sewing projects since home ec in jr. hr high

the looks on my girls faces made every minute worth a million bucks
the younger one said as I asked her to try it on " Mom. it's finally done !?!?" the sewing machine has been on the dining room table since last week !

I learned alot..I think the next ones would (or is it will) be quicker...I even learned how to take apart the whole bobbin case when somethin' really bad happened....

Mallory as soon as she got it on

top view of one of the skirts - you can't tell well from this pic, but the grey and some of the reds are actually small prints - as always , better close up

thanks to everyone for letter me CASE your ideas and for all the help with some questions...now what???

You ROCK!

Now onto your next custom!!

Hobby Lobby has a 40% off coupon in our paper this morning. They won't take duplicates or I'd post it. Everyone looking for the Cricut look for the coupon because this would save lots of money.

t- Is it your BIG, big birthday? The ((hushed whispers out of reverence))
40th? :rotfl2: Mine is in 23 more days!!!! How does it feel? Did you wake up all super wise and patient? That's what I'm hoping for! That, and the sudden urge to exercise (LOL!!!!!)

Have a WONDERFUL day! And remember, birthday cake doesn't have any calories!

You are SO loved!!!

Thank you so much!! No, it wasn't that big but as of 7:24 pm yesterday I am officially the BIG 3-0!
I had a wonderful b-day. Went out for fajita's and margaritas at Applebee's w/ DH and the kids and a friend and her son. Then to my mom's for cake w/ my fam. I got the BEST be-day presents. My mom made an album of pics of my life from birth to now (not including my ex-husband:lmao: Which was hard cause I dated him on and off from my freshman year until our divorce) and sh e bought me this KILLER silver cuff bracelet when they were in the keys it has the buddhist mantra Om mani padme hum written on it in sanskrit and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!
My MIL gave me a fold up board for cutting so I can stop going to her house to cut stuff and (cause I only sew at my mom or mil's -cause they have all the "stuff") I got a measuring tape, straight pins, a pin magnet, a sewing guage, a rotary cutter and mat and a fabric marker (and $50) add $50 from Grand and I'd say I made out! I'd like to put the money in the WDW jar BUT I've been wanting a cuttle bug forever and since noone will buy me one no matter that they were on sale both just before mothersday and my birthday..I guess I'll have to buy it for myself. Of course I could save it toward a new sewing machine- I want one that embroiders.

This is so wonderful. She is such a brave girl!! I have never been blessed in the hair department, noone would ever want mine. I've always been envious of those who could give in that capacity. I think it's wonderful of you to install a charitable nature in your daughter and teach her that she is more than her hair. She is just as beautiful w/ short hair, I especially like the cute bob she has now.

EEYORE'S TIARA: I think your daughter is amazing. I can't believe the outstanding children you guys all have. I think a pedi at WDW would be great! Maybe you could make it a day w/ you too. Take her to the tea at GF, it would be a great mother/daughter thing and oh so grown up!! I'm sure she would appreciate the bonding time.

LazyDazy- Once again astounding us w/ FABULOUS clothes!!

Thanks to everyone for your comments and or advice on the minnie outfit.. My mom agreed that what she thought it lacked was some black, I may try my hand at a mickey head applique. I am adding a ruffle to each pant leg as well as the straps, at the time of the picture the pants were still in progress (tied around her waist w/ a bit of elastic) and the straps were not sewn on, She'd just come over to try it on. Will post pics as soon as I finish it up. Probably tomorrow night.

I'm not a professional by any means, but here's what I do.

When I shirred a top both front and back, it was flat. After shirring, I stitched it together to make the tube.

For the bobbin, I put the end thru the little hole at the top/bottom of the bobbin just like I do when I machine wind it. I wound a few times and then let the end go. I just wound the elastic around and didn't care if it went top to bottom or bottom to top. Where ever it landed was fine with me (and the machine didn't care, either!).

The elastic is on the inside of the garment. Regular thread on top.

HTH!

stepmom - I love that princess fabric! I need to go to my hobby lobby. I'm trying to resist the temptation though!

princess lovers mom - Great job!!!!

aimee - I can't wait to see the meg costume finished.

eeyore3847 - I love that tink fabric

eeyore's tiara - September 19th thru the 30th. I'm so excited!

tnmom - my partner was in lafayette yesterday.

Still catching up! I'll post more later!

I have the cutest 3 year old cousin (she's a smart easygoing kid)

My mom suggested that I make her Halloween costume so I asked her what she wanted to be. First she said "Mimi" (apparently Hello Kitty's sister???) but after much convincing, settled on another character

"Pink Minnie Mouse"!!!

Ok, I know red minnie mouse fabric is out there at Walmart (saw a ton of it there last week) but is it going to be possible to find larger white on pink??? Anyone know of it for fairly cheap?

And should I just CASE the costume from tons of pictures or is there a pattern/tutorial out there? She wears at least a 4 but I could skinny down a 5 because she is so tall.

Any tips for my first Minnie Mouse costume????

You could take the peasant blouse from the bookmaks page and add a full skirt to it.

Can anyone tell me how to make the diaper and wipe holder?
It's in the bookmark site.

Where can I find the best pillowcase pattern? Not pillowcase "dress" but a regular pillowcase just like this.
There are some pillowcase patterns in the bookmarks site.

please, anyone???? how do I tell if my kenmore sewing machine is a high or low.... for the purchase of a ruffler foot? TIA
Lori

Well, girls, I'm almost done with some outfits for my son and I need some suggestions. Listed below are three overall sets.....Safari, Sorcerer, and Stitch. The Safari and Stitch look a little plain, so I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what I can add to spruce them up. I think the sorcerer looks fine by itself because there's a broom added on the back, although I have to add on the handles yet. I was thinking of doing a beach scene with a surf board on one leg for the stitch overalls and maybe do a lion on the back for the safari. These will be cut at a bermuda short length. Any ideas?
I also threw in pics of his necklaces. :)

Those are all really good questions. I cannot help but I am really interested to hear the answers. I bought the elastic thread as well. I need it for YCMT skirt. I just have not tried it yet.

what about adding jumba (sp) on a leg and a surfboard would be cool!
I think for the safari how about dressing a different character like pluto in a lion suit etc.... or put a jeep on the back with a character driving inside.
I like the sorcerer like it is...

30! ACK! That's so YOUNG! Now I can pinch your cheeks and call you sweetie, being that I'm almost 10 years older than you.... "Sweetie". LOL! Sorry I aged you 10 years...when you said BIG, I thought you meant BIG. ;)

Sounds like you got a lot of cool stuff!!!!! Have fun playing with all your birthday gifts! :yay:

You could use the bandanas they sell in Walmart. They come in pink with a big dot, and are only 94 cents each...

Where are these at in Walmart? I looked at ours the other day, but couldn't find any. It's a brand spankin' new Walmart though, so they don't seem to have everything in yet.

Lori

Lori, I love this set!!! Your daughter is so adorable too!

All this talk about Sergers has me interested in trying it out... 15-20 years ago when I worked at Cloth World (anyone remember that name before they became JoAnn's??) while in school, my mom bought a serger with my employee discount. I'm sure it has been in her closet for about that long... :rotfl:
I don't remember them being Cloth World. Did Joanns buy them out? Ours has been JoAnns since before I graduated High School, WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY Back in 1987. (20 year class reunion next month! I need to lose some weight!!)

Hello Friends.......
Ive been lurking, aka drooooooooooling for MONTHS now...I do not sew, nor do I endeavor to!!:rotfl2: ...but, I do own an upscale childrens clothing boutque and am dying for my DD4 to have some amazing sets to wear to MVMCP in Nov. .........anyone want to trade newborn to size 7 girl AND boy-boutique clothing for a set? PLEase please please puuuuuuuuleaseeeeeee pm me if u do, did I say Please???;)

I also carry those pettiskirts by Kaiya, theyre spectacular! Cant wait to see more of your stuff in pettiskirt style-

:welcome: I do sew, but from the amount of things I've sewn lately, you wouldn't know it!!!

I have been in hospital with my DS8 having his Tonsills out for the last couple of days so just catching up on all your fine work girls and Tom keep it up.

Sam from downunder

 for you and your son. I hope he is doing well.

Hi All!
I have been away from the computer most of the day - I need to play catch up! Sorry for all the pics - but I had to share. The first two are of DD two years ago when she donated her hair to Locks of Love - the next three are from today when she had another 11 inches cut to donate. This is the shortest it has ever been - and was a little bittersweet for both of us!

4r7qzb4.jpg

 Your daughter looks adorable with the short hair!!! What a wonderful little girl! Arminda donated her hair a few years ago. I was looking at the Locks of Love website, and she wanted to know what it was all about, then she decided she wanted to donate too. It was her first real haircut, and I cryed like a little baby when they cut her hair! :sad1: I was so proud of her though. I use to do the heart braid with her hair too!

Okay guys this is off topic, :offtopic: but I need help with a reward for my oldest dd. She has stepped in and taken up the slack for me this past year while I have been ill. She has been super responsible and I couldn’t have made it through without her help. The kicker to all of this is that Saturday I was having a horrible day and I couldn’t seem to function at all. I wanted to sew but I couldn’t and then I tried to get on here, but that wasn’t great either. She knew I wanted to get more items finished and that I was disappointed in myself for not being able to. So without a word, she came and set down in front of me with all this stuff and started to massage my feet and then gave me a pedicure with polish! :sad1:
Oh my gosh, I am just crying after reading this! What a WONDERFUL daughter you have!!! You must be one wonderful Mom to be raising such a thoughtful daughter!
The question is, what do I do for her to let her know how much I appreciate her? I thought about a pedicure for her at WDW while we are there. Is that a good reward, or is it too much, or not enough? I would like to surprise her at WDW, but I don’t know what to do. :confused3 BTW, she is 12 years old. Thanks guys, Cassandra

My dd8 did that a few months ago for the first time, and I had mixed emotions. I was so proud of her for doing it, but I hated to see that hair go. She looks so much older with short hair, and I'm in no hurry for that! She has a friend in her Brownie troop that had cancer, so she really has seen the need. Congrats to your daughter, to her from our family!

Aww, how wonderful that she did tat! I know what you mean about the mixed feelings though. I had NO idea how emotional I would get when I saw them cut Arminda's hair! I was a wreck. Arminda was happy as a clam though. I should find my pictures.

Great job!!! I love the My Little Pony outfit!!
