Question for all of you experienced sewers out there.

I have a t-shirt that I purchased DD with a very nice applique on it. It is unfortunately too small for her, (it was clearanced, so not too big a deal) but I really want to incorporate it into a new custom for her. (It's very unique, at least to me it is;) )

The t-shirt is a fairly heavy weight material, not too much stretch to it, but it does have some.
Do I try to be very careful and cut as close to the applique as I can and fuse it to the new fabric, and then stitch it on?
Do I make a panel out of it, and can I surge it to a cotton without it puckering? (never tried surging two different types of material together)
Or do I take the panel and fuse the whole thing to a piece of cotton to make it more "stable" to use?

It's the only one I have, so I just can't practice and then scrap it if it doesn't turn out.

Any and all suggestions will be helpful!

Thanks!

If you're going to put knit on a woven, I think it needs to be stabilized. Maybe an iron-on stabilizer or Heat N Bond Lite to a thin piece of woven fabric. You could practice with the back of the shirt if you aren't feeling daring. :)

There are three Hancocks between here (WV) and home. So, I'm going to call today and ask about the Princess Toile so I can stop tomorrow on our way and get some, if I find any. But I need to know how to say "toile" I've been saying TWALL, is that right?

You definitely pronounce it "Tow-eel". Really! ;) ;) ::yes:: ::yes::
(that's a wink, wink, nod, nod, in case you missed the Monty Python reference)
Come on people, why I am bananaing by myself?

   I was banana-ing!! I just wanted to wait to read to the end of the thread before I replied!! Woo-hoo!!:woohoo:
Okay ladies and Tom of course. Here is my first creation with a pattern, McCall's 5088. After a long intimate night with my seam ripper :headache: and thinking very nastry thoughts in my head it is complete :cheer2: , top and bottom are from the same pattern. I think I will add a ruffle to the bottom but I haven't decided yet so it is left unfinished. Now that I have done one I think the next ones will be much easier. :cool1:

This is so cute! It's a cute, classy little outfit. I like the idea of either a white or pink ruffle at the bottom.

Silly kids keep wanting to be fed :rolleyes1

My kids are the same way. SHEESH!

I don't have any answers, but I've wondered the same thing. I have some cute personalized outfits from disneyshopping.com. My daughter has outgrown them, but I'd like to try to transfer the appliques onto something else.

Didn't think about practicing with the back!

I love this ... would you believe that I was going to do (err.. attempt to do) the same little girl applique for my creation with this fabric ... I actually bought the fabrics at 10:05 this morning (yes, I was waiting at Hancock's door). DD kinda resembles this little girl when her hair is in pigtails.

I have to admit that I am now intimidated to ever post mine -when and if it ever gets finished.

I'm planning to do the little Asian girl on the bodice of my DD's. I've got the "dress" part made, I just gotta get the courage up to do the applique.

This is what I think can work for any age with this fabric.

Wow, I was searching the link to post this, and the amount of work that has gone into this is amazing! Thanks so much. It is so awesome to have everything all together in one place!

Camping Griswalds - That is awesome!!! Can I ask if you just "glued" on the patches with heat-n-bond or something or did you also stitch them down?

I know there is a Mary Poppin printed fabric (sheets?). I've seen other sets with exactly the same panels. One I saw was from a well known seller in StudioE and I think the Voldemort listing was CASEd from that sweet seller (the Mary Poppins set is on her website). Both have exactly the same placement of elements, use a small red dot for the ruffles and have blue as an accent fabric. :sad2:

Quick question - what does CASEd stand for? I am assuming some sort of copying...I "borrowed" a Halloween applique from an outfit on the Voldemort :rotfl: - can I post it here when I am done?:confused3 (It's my first attempt so there may not be anything to show anyway!!!)

Hey! I am quoting myself!

Just want to repost this in case anyone missed it!

35 names so far!

Anyone else?..... Anyone?......Anyone?.... Buehler?....;)

That was so generous!!! Congratulations to the winner! Tom - your work is amazing!

I've been very lazy about taking pictures lately...
but here is my dd's Minnie Safari for AK, and my around the world kids.you can't see it but each red and white dot panel has a different little kid..and ..You all saw the shoes that I showed earlier...
Please excuse Her Royal Magesty....I interrupted Mickey Mouse Clubhouse...and she proceeded to cry like a little baby...LOL... My response is always the same...

You have to say it in a sing-song voice or it doesn't have the same effect..

Too Bad...So Sad....Here's the Phone, and call your Dad....:rolleyes1

Did I Mention that I'm up for the Mom of the Year award...:rotfl:

Mine has appliques all the way around, one is the asian boy, afro-american boy, blonde girl, brunette girl, and blonde girl again on the bodice. I didn't do cheeks on all of them, just the one on the bodice and I used black paint for the eyes and smiles. I just drew it on with the tip of the bottle.. it was pretty easy..

I am taking DD to the American Idol concert tonight. When we were getting ready to go, I asked her what she wanted to wear.
She picked the outfit that I mader her.:goodvibes

Anyway, I told her it was too hot, so we compromised and she just wore the twirl top with a pink pair of shorts, and a bow that I had to whip up at the last minute!

I think she looks o.k.

DW is at work or I would ask her.

So I have a 1970something White sewing machine I acquired. It has all the stitches I currently "need" and works fine (except winds uneven bobbins the majority of the time).

My family asked what I want for my birthday. I was thinking about asking for a new sewing machine? And if I do, which one should I ask for?

I have the Butterick pattern that's similar. There's a strip about 2" high x 5" wide with interfacing sandwiched between two layers of fabric. You put a buttonhole in each end (about 1/2" from the edge). Then you sew buttons on the corners of the flaps of the back that go under the arms. You button each side on the little strip. There really isn't a "front" to the bottom piece--it's just the little button flappy thing in the very center. The sides extend around the ribs a little, but not all the way across the stomach.

Hopefully that was semi-helpful. :) I don't have pictures taken of the one I made (if I could even post them yet).

Hi...that's my apron top...LOL.. I make mine reversible, so I think it's easier...but this is how I make it..
I have the general shape of the front and back pieces cut out on posterboard, or use the pattern. Make sure you have 4 of these. This is the time to decorate them and plan how you want the top to look. Then I make my straps. For this top, I took one piece of black ribbon (grosgrain) and one piece of white. I wanted it to be different on each side. I sandwiched rickrack in there for some fun. Be sure your bobbin color is whatever color you have on the bottom and the uppper thread is whatever color is on the top. So I did black and white and I liked the seamless look.
Anyway, finish off your ties and position them where you'd like them. You will need 2 for each side, so 4 total. Go ahead and sew them down at this point. Then I sew one side to the straps, make sure your straps are pointed inward, put the other half right side down and make a sandwich out of it, leaving a small area open to turn it right side out. Then after I turn it right side out, I topstitch all the way around and also stitch closed the open area. Then you repeat on the other side, but the only difference, is in order to position the straps correctly, you will need to have the whole other side inside the first side, when you stitch around it. Then you have to pull the whole top through the opening that you leave, so this opening will be a little bit bigger...
I'm terrible at explaining things...I need to start taking pictures as I sew...so I can explain it a little better...

Thanks to both of you, I will send this along to my mom.

I love this outfit, kinda makes me wish we were going to Epcot and not on the cruise. Oh but, Brent isn't at Epcot!

This was the first outfit I did. I'm glad you like it!! I made it before I knew how to sew. You could applique the Mickeys but I didn't. I used "Aleene's OK to wash it" fabric glue. I "painted" a thin layer of glue on the back and just put them where I wanted them. I've washed a different tee that I used the fabric glue on and, so far, it's still ok.
