We are in need of a new Iron.
We have been using the $20 one DH bought when he started college.
So can you guys tell me what the fancier Irons offer, that I would need? I have seen them up over $100 and I am trying to figure out what these Irons do that my old one didn't.
Are we talking about watts? features?
Who knew there are so many options for Irons.

We'll be there six days. I'm taking 8 customs plus the custom Snow White dress for the Halloween party. Everything will have matching bows and accessories.

We have a Rowenta. I love the steam on it. It does vertical steam, and in general just puts out a lot more steam than a lot of the less expensive irons I've owned. The steam just makes it a lot easier to get wrinkles out for me.

Yes, that turned out so cute! Now we'll be able to spot each other! I found a really cute pirate hat on eBay. Hopefully, she'll keep it on.

First of all, I'm a hairdresser (or I was before Norah came along) and THAT is one CUTE haircut!!! Now, I love love love the outfits! I have a little one attending preschool too and that would be an adorable first day outfit!

is the IRONING!!!!!!! I have spent all morning ironing DD customs after washing. I don't like ironing, I forgot how much I disliked ironing.... now I am remembering

You know, I've always made DH do the ironing; ALL of it. But since I've been sewing for the kids, I've started to enjoy it

How many customs do you take for your trip?

We'll be there 9 days and I was thinking 9 outfits. Apparently the norm is double and since I will have more than enough made by then, I guess some days I'll plan for outfits. Doesn't matter to me, we go to Disneyland almost every week so all their outfits will get loads of wear.

Ok, I have finally finished this outfit! I had completed the jumper part a week ago and it was way too short. I knew it was going to be, but I only ordered a yard of the fabric online so I was stuck. I am the opposite of most of you, when I am up at the fabric counter I panic and yell "one yard!" DH suggested bloomers (duh, why didn't I think of that!) and here we are. I rummaged through my scrapbooking supplies and found the ribbon with polka dots on it. I looked at Teresa's bookmarks to find out how to make a bow (I am ribbon-challenged) and safety pinned it on. Thanks for looking!

Well, didn't those turn out cute!? Great work!

OK, I was able to find the pattern front online. It looks like the ease is to allow a little extra room for girls who are "blossoming" but don't yet need darts. Here's what I'd do:

Match the seam edges from both ends (hem and armhole) up to where the ease stitching starts.

Pull the gathering threads so the front and back are now the same length. It shouldn't be a lot of gathering so just try to distribute the extra fabric as evenly as possible over the area.

As you stitch that section, you may need to hold the pieces behind the needle and in front so you can pull it taut. You don't want to stretch it but keep it as flat as possible as you let the machine pull it through for stitching.

It may take a few tries but you should be able to get it sewn without any tucks or gathers showing. If you can't, you can try trimming the hemline of the front piece just a little so you can keep some ease but still have a flat seam.

Here is one set of family outfits. We wore them last trip and I am altering DSs from a onsie to a button down shirt so that it will fit him. We also have skirts (me and DMIL) but it was too cold this night so we will be wearing them this time---they are for our Ohana night. I will try to get pics of the others soon but as I have stated all too often my pc and camera do NOT like each other and I can only uplaod pics when I visit my parents in Baltimore---hopefully I will have alot to add this weekend. Thank you all for the comments on my daughters outfit! It encourages me to go on!

The ruffled hem has a rolled hem, that I did on the surger. I used the blue thread to try to tie all the colors together! I am glad that you noticed!


All the outfits posted yesterday were OUTSTANDING! Gives me more ideas for the next one!

I like the blue on the hem. Someday I'm going to have to sit down and figure how to use the serge. I basically just use mine for seams. Just because I have no clue. I just found a piping foot in my box of gadgets that came with the machine. How easy will that make it!!!

Up until just a couple weeks ago, I didn't iron. I just put wrinkled clothes back in the dryer. Now, I'm very aware of wrinkles and am ironing MUCH more. I love the look of clean crisp clothing.

I'm sure it's just the progression of this thread's mind control

My sister will only iron the part that shows. Like the cuffs or a collar. She got an iron for Xmas and she wanted to know who it was for.

I hate it too and usually avoid anything that can't be sprayed with Downy Wrinkle Release. I grabbed some spray starch at Target to use for ironing fabric to sew, and it's AMAZING the difference it makes! This may be well known to everyone except me, but just in case I thought I would throw the suggestion out there.

My mother will iron absolutely NOTHING when she sews. It drives me crazy!! I have to make sure I press every seam. I like to use Spray starch with sizing. Any way, I was pressing away and all of a sudden it smelled terrible. I'm wondering what that horrible smell was. I looked at the can of starch, and it wasn't starch. It was spray glue. Now I make sure I double check what can is sitting on the end of the ironing board.

the dress i am making says to pin front to back at side seams, placing upper edge of back at small dot on front. Baste...does this mean to baste the sides?

What's the pattern? Sometimes if I see it, it can help. It sounds like they want you to baste the front to back. It could be to ease whatever your doing with the small dot. It can't hurt to baste and she what you've got going. also, read ahead and see what happens.

LOL at the spray glue. That's definitely something I could see myself doing.

I don't like to iron in general and usually just machine wash and hang to dry the clothes I make for DD. Once they are dry, I toss them in the dryer for 10 minutes to "fluff" them. Sometimes I'll touch up some areas with the iron, like halter straps and sashes, but I avoid ironing ruffles.

When it comes to construction, though, I think ironing is a must. It makes the construction easier plus I think it actually cuts down on the need to iron after washing (could be imagined LOL). Some fabric seems to need less ironing, too.

The pattern for the jumper is McCalls 4006. Very easy, but way too short for my amazon girl. If you have a tall one, be sure and make it longer. Can't wait to see what you do!
