I use Photoshop which allows me to work with layers:

1) get the image from the pattern (print screen from the description page) and crop/resize as necessary
2) capture a photo image of the fabric (from an online store or a photo I've taken myself and uploaded)
3) 'erase' the white in the pattern where I want the fabric image to be
4) insert a new layer using the fabric - make sure it's the bottom layer - size as necessary
5) choose a color to fill in the rest of the areas

Since I have no idea what is going on, I will just add that I have been working on a new dress and if I had 2 matching buttons, you all would be seeing here right now, since I don't have the buttons you all will have to wait until tomorrow. I borrowed the idea from something I saw a long time ago. I absolutely love it. Hope you all are enjoying your weekend. It's thunderstorming here now, and I'm off to take a quick nap... since my 2 little ones are sleeping. We are seeing a late movie tonight and I want them to be able to stay awake for it...LOL

Can't wait to see the new outfit--where do you find the time??!!??

Frankly, I really don't know. I work from home, go to school full time, and still manage to sew a ton. I bought my buttons tonight, and some fabric for a sea world outfit, or two, for my girls.
The movie we saw was Evan Almighty...My mother convinced us to see it, she thought it was animated...LOL....when we walked in and sat down with our $35.00 worth of movie snacks, she says, I think we're in the wrong theater... I had to convince her that she was in the right one. The kids really didn't like it.
anyway...I will be posting photos of my outfit tomorrow...Yea

Wow. I love the new outfits (and Mono~rail, I think your grown-up Snow White is too fun!)

I have spent the day working on my very first twirl skirt (of the patchwork variety.) Let's just say it has been a learning experience!

It's not done yet, but I've learned a few things:

Go for all-over prints, not prints that need to run in a specific direction
I mentioned this earlier, I think, but if your pattern runs in a certain direction, you can't do the cut strips then sew them together. If you do, you'll end up with vertical panels of squares, which don't work for a twirl skirt. In addition, when you patchwork them together, you need to be really careful that you don't get one of your directional blocks in upside down or sideways. Those squares are so... well... square, that it's easy to get one in wrong. (Can you tell who's been busy with her seam ripper today?)

And, my third issue with my directional print was that I didn't realize it was directional until I'd already cut some strips. I had intended to cut the strips the width of the patchwork squares then vary the length to allow for my waistband, etc. But due to the directional print, I hadn't cut them the width of the square as I'd planned -- they were the *height* of the square (so I couldn't use them for my waistband row.)

You can get more squares out of a regular 1/4 yard of fabric than a "fat quarter."
I'm learning all about fabric terminology this weekend. A regular 1/4 yard is 9" by with width of the fabric (usually 44"). A "fat quarter" is 18" long, but only half the width of the fabric (22"). Fat quarters are usually sold for quilting because they're more rectangular. I found a couple of fat quarters in the colors I needed, so I bought them, but I got more squares out of my regular 1/4 yard than the fat quarter.

This skirt is *really* full.
I did what the directions I found said -- first teir = twice as long as waist measurement; second teir = twice as long as first teir; third teir = twice as long as the second. It's going to use about 1-1/2 yards of fabric for a 2T-ish size skirt. I'm a little worried that it's going to be too *heavy* when I'm done with it. (I don't have the elastic in yet, but I'm hoping it holds. I can forsee the weight of it pulling it right down over DD's little hips!) Has anyone had a problem with that?

So anyway -- there are my lessons of the day. The skirt is turning out cute, despite the wrong turns. I will post a picture when I'm finished with it. But I think it's gonna be a few days.

I pulled out some fabric that I bought the other day to cut some ruffles, and when the employee cut my yard, she cut it all crooked! I had to use my rotary cutter to square it up, and I had to take off about 6 inches total because it was such a mess!

The fabric was $9 yard, and I only bought one yard. That is more than I pay for alot of my fabrics, and to have so much of it wasted because the cutter was careless just really hacks me off! From now on, I will watch the fabric being cut, and if it is hacked up, I will refuse to buy it.

OK, vent over. I just needed to get that out to other people who will understand my frustration. Deep breath. . . deep breath. . . deep breath. . .

After a few conversations with a master seamstress, I learned that she and her sewing friends always request that the fabric is nipped with the sicssors about 1" and then torn for the length of the fabric at the cutting table. That way you always get a straight, even cut with no waste (well maybe less than 1" to prevent using any distressed fabric fibers from the tear). She said it's what a lot of experienced seamstresses do to ensure they get a straight, even block of fabric every time. Maybe something to consider next time.

I am a little behind, lots of reading and drama to catch up on today! I had several projects I planned to finish this weekend, but DH threw me a surprise birthday party. So now I am really behind. But here is what I got finished today, Oh and I painted my dining room, but that picture is for another board! My daughter still won't wear the necklace, but I need to use up my stash anyway! The outfit is for my niece. The shirts are on clearance at Target for $1.48, I just ironed on the bling and tied my little heart out on the skirt and shoes. All together this outfit cost me $7.00 to make and also includes a pair of black shorts not in the photo. Thanks for reading my ramblings, I've heard that is what happens when you get old!

Nice work everybody. Thanks for putting all the pics in one spot and organizing them, too. Wow!!! I went and looked and can't believe how many outfits I missed. I really thought I had gone back to catch all the posts I've missed, but obviously I was wrong.

Enabler alert........Joann's has tulle on dale Wed - Thurs for $.49/yard. I think it'll be a great time to stock up on black and orange esp -- but also all the other colors you're needing. So, how many yards do I need for a tutu?
