I love my dh!! It was so cute last night he was walking with me through the fabric section while I played around. Suddenly he stops and says "This fabric looks like it would be perfect for a JOJO outfit!" And it was! I am so impressed that he listens to what I say and doesn't think I'm insane. It's ironic, he has a better feeling for what matches than I do

Ok, I wish I was showing you both kids' pirate outfits but the sewing machine ate my son's shirt! I'll have to get another shirt and try again. I think the machine did not like the iron on I used to attach the mickey head to the shirt. At least I hope so because I have tried everything else to fix it.

My daughter is pleased with her outfit. The short ruffle is the creepy skull fabric that my son picked out for his shorts. You couldn't really tell that is was skulls, so we added a bling skull. I wish I would have added more tulle: I used a half a yard and then cut rough triangles so it would look piratey. I then sewed the scraps into the scrunchie. It was fun. Oh, and I altered a pattern for the first time! This pattern called for a zipper and I thought no way, so I made the yoke bigger and put elastic in the waist. Anyway, enough rambling, here it is:

This is so cute! Great job avoiding the zipper! They aren't too bad but if you can avoid it It's less trouble.

I finished an outfit yesterday! I have had such a crazy summer that I haven't gotten any sewing done so it feels really good to have this outfit totally complete!

This is for my 6 year old niece, Blayke to wear on her Christmas trip to Disneyworld! I kept it pretty basic. You can't see the detail very well, but the neck and arm holes are lined with rick rack.

I love the traditional smocked stuff. The bow is a great touch. I sure hope you'll have pictures in the park of her wearing it!

Yes, I am very lucky to have a family member that smocks. She did a few things for my son when he was a baby (coming home outfit, outfits for panel pictures, etc.) and she has done all of my DD's church and Easter dresses. She is soooo affordable b/c she gives me a family discount that I have never learned to do it.

Here is the Cinderella dress she did for Easter:

Not sure if you can really tell (since it's not laying flat) but that white circle is the face of a clock that is striking midnight and just to the right of Cinderella is the shoe that she lost smocked in silver.

I paid about $30.00 for this dress and matching bloomers. It is made big enough that she is going to get a lot of wear out of this dress.

As far as Disney smocking plates go, I have seen very few on ebay. I looked everywhere for one when I was looking for Easter but didn't have any luck.

That is soooo adorable!! I'm really determined to learn to smock. I've even thought about buying the books/tutorials, and I will if this class falls through. I have so many ideas of smocked outfits I'd like to do.

Disney smocking plates aren't rare, but they go for a pretty penny. I've seen some (just plates, no outfits) for for $40-$60. There's a specific Peter Pan one I want and it sells high.

Hope this isn't too much to ask--- How do you smock?? What are plates?? Could someone please explain the whole thing to me ?? I have no idea and would love to know how it is done. Thanks !!!! ---- Mindy

I don't smock, I just buy gobs of it, but here's what I can tell you. The smocking plate is the white pleated area that you see behind Cinderella. The actual smocking is Cinderella, the duke and mice.

These could also be smocked around the neck, like the pictures tadamom posted.

Those are traditionally called picture smocking. There are other types too, like heirloom and (sorry I don't know the names of the others). A popular design is a trellis design. This type of smocking is usually only around the neck and sleeves.

Smocking is almost like cross-stitch, except (at least to my understanding) you don't have the holes to guide you and you're stitching on the pleated fabric. You will have a pattern, but nothing on the actual garment to guide you.

The best way to learn is to take a class or have an experience smocker teach you. There are also books and tutorials.

ETA: this isn't one of my favorite dresses, but you can see this type of smocking is very different from the picture smocking.

Hi all, just wanted to let everyone know about the fabric sales going on. Hancocks has all licensed fabric for 25% off. I was able to get POC fabric, 2 mickey prints and the minnie dots. I was going to post pictures but photobucket was taking forever so I will try again later to edit it in.
Joann's has licensed fabric for 30% off, novelty cottons for 30% off and Calico prints for 30% off. I was able to get a ton on the back to school prints that have been shown here and on e bay.
Now I just need to figure out what I am going to do with all the fabric.

Smocking is something that I am very interested in also. My mother always put me in smocked dresses. We lived near the Polly Flinders outlet when I was little. I am a sucker for smocked dresses. I love the ones for Orient Expressed. I looked on ebay for smocking plates and I am not ready to take the plunge yet.

I love their quality and if you catch the end of season sales, you can get beautiful, very expensive smocked outfits for less than $25-$30. I just bought a bunch for her for next year. Plus the dresses tend to fit for more than one season. Also living in Louisiana (where it's warm most of the year) we get a lot of wear out of her dresses. OE has a smocked Cinderella with a matching sweater right now. Big bucks, but I'm so tempted...They had a beautiful Alice in Wonderland last year.

My other favorites are Amanda Remembered, Rags Land, Viva la Fete, Beaux et Belles (sometimes has Disney smocking), Luli and Me, Silly Goose...I could go on and on but I'll stop here

I know the Cinderella dress you are talking about. I got the catalog about a week before we left for WDW. It is a good thing because I would have bought two dresses. One for the baby and one for DD3.

My brother and his family live in Baton Rouge and yes the weather is a little different than Maryland. Does the OE website run specials as well or is it in their boutique only?

Thanks for the heads up about the other brands. Every January I start stalking Marshalls and TJ Maxx for the smocked sun dresses. Funny they only get them in late January. I guess that is when the start getting in Easter dresses.

I think one of the Cinderella plates is done by Gwen Milner (sp?) and on a different message board (for smocking) she said that she was actually designing a new one. Hopefully it will be out soon.

OK, I'm turning to y'all for inspiration.

I found these for $1 at Hancock's today. I have no idea what to do with them. I only took a picture of Pooh since it showed up the best, but I bought others. It's a fabric panel with the scene on it. I'd like to do more than just sew it onto a shirt or something. I think it's meant for quilting.

I don't know how well it'll show up, but here's a picture of all of the other designs. They had all but Cinderella and Ariel. I bought 2 different Poohs, Snow White, Peter Pan, Nemo, Pinocchio and Belle.

Now on to this fabric: I found it today at Walmart for $2. DS fell in love with it because it looked like camo and because the ghosts reminded him of Oogie Boogie. He doesn't like "camp" style shirts, but wants to wear something with it for Halloween and wants me to make him a pillowcase out of it. Any ideas? I'm not very creative...

What to do?

I cut out the top layer for dd's pirate tulle skirt. Its the skull and roses pattern. I had it lined up so I could sew up the sides and it was folded. Walked away to set up the sewing machine and 2yo dd grabbed the scissors and put an inch slice through both pieces. I wonder if I gather it enough to not notice. I was so pissed I screamed Almost gave dh a attack. In my fit I told hubby I was going to bid $120 on the on on ebay that I like lol.

I'm so sorry! At least she only cut fabric with the scissors and not herself. I hope you can mend it.

Thanks for posting for me: isn't it creepy! I am going to try to finish my son's shirt to match his creepy skull shorts and post tomorrow.

I made my son board shorts and they turned out well. I used Butterick 3475 (only because they were on sale last week) and they have an option for trim down the sides or a cargo style pocket.

Thanks for all the comments on my daughter's outfit. She wore it to camp today and got lots of comments: she was so pleased with herself. She told everyone, "Mommy sewed this for me!"

I got some of these ( i posted it a while back) on clearance at Walmart for 3$- So that was a great find!! There were a lot of them, I thought about waiting to see if they were reduced further - but my luck they'd go to $0.50 and disappear before I got there.

But I plan on putting mine on some nappy bags I am making for a few friends for our disney trip in Oct. though I wish that pooh was the one I got for my MIL the only on ethey had was the one w/ pooh pulling his shirt down over his tummy in the mirror- I'm rethinking it. Don't want to seem like I'm saying she's round like pooh!
