My daughter will be 11 on our upcoming trip. In my guidebook (The Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Line 2017) it states that she will have to choose between the Oceaneer Club and Lab. That she's able to visit one or the other, but must make a choice and once she chooses that is it. "Once a choice is made, however, it may not be changed."

She'll most likely want to go to the Oceaneer Club with her sisters that are 10 & 5, but it would be nice to be able to attend some of the program options at the Edge. Is it not possible for her to be able to visit both clubs? This seems like an odd restriction to me.

No - Oceaneer's Club/Lab is one space, for ages 3-12. It's roughly separated into the Club space with activities aimed toward the 3-7 group and the Lab space with activities aimed toward the 8-12 group. But anyone in the Club may participate in whatever activities interest them.

At age 11 she will have the choice of Oceaneer's or Edge (ages 11-14). Time was she would have had to chose one or the other of those. But no longer. She can participate in either Oceaneer's (club or lab) or Edge as she find the activities that interest her.

That's not true. I've heard that at one point, they made kids choose. But now kids aged 11 and 12 can attend both the Oceaneers Club/Lab and the Edge as they wish.

The Oceaneers Club and Lab are connected and are both for kids in the 3 - 12 age group. The Club space is more geared towards the younger end of the age range and the Lab is geared toward the older end of the age range.

Wow, I'll have to remind my wife not to get that book. I worry what other bad information might be in there...

That's great! Thank you both! She'll want to spend most of her time with her sister, but really wants to do the animation cells. It will be nice that she has the option.

It's actually a pretty good source of information. But, since it's not DCL (or Disney) connected, here and there it has some outdated information.

Just a side note.... my 12 year old tried the Lab, as he's interested in science and they put the magic band on for him. He then wanted to check out Edge, which he enjoyed and made friends at in the first two days. By day 3, however, some bored 14 year olds (stairwell haunters) were teasing him and calling him a baby because he had the lab band on. He asked to take it off (and I heard at least one other boy had the same problem). We brought it to the attention of guest services, and they did what they could, but these kids still made life hard for him whenever he went into the stairwell towards the Edge. He had to wait for the one elevator that actually goes up there.

So hopefully that's just a one off kid who is a jerk, but just make sure your kids are happy where they are and there's no trouble for them.
