What has been your experience of dining with kids at Jiko? Did they find something they liked to eat? The menu looks fine to me unless things are unusually spicy.. Would my 10 yr old "adult' be able to order a kids meal entree and then choose an adult dessert if he wanted? (Using Adult Dxdp credit?) or maybe they would just make a steak or chicken without the spices and sauces for him?

I'm not sure about Jiko in particular, as I will be taking my kids there in July for the first time. But I've yet to take my kids to any Disney restaurant where they wouldn't take a more sophisticated entree and make a more simple preparation for my daughter. For example, at HBD she ordered the grouper and they served it plain with a little seasoning and substituted white truffle whipped potatoes for all the other ingredients. At Le Cellier, they served her filet plain with smashed potatoes substituted for risotto and put the sauce on the side. I can't imagine that Jiko couldn't do the same.

We've taken our DD with us on 2 occasions. They were 11 and 8 on our last trip in 2010 and 9 and 6 on our trip before that. On the most recent trip, our oldest was considered an "adult" for the DDP. With that, we were worried about being able to find something that she liked. She had no problem at all. The kid's menu is your typical Disney fare, but maybe a few additional options with a Jiko flair. Both kids made out great and really like the restaurant.

Also on our most recent trip, the server actually brought a phone to our youngest daughter and told her the phone was for her. When she answered, it was Goofy on the other end. It was a riot to see her face. We had no idea he was going to do that. She still talks about it to this day.

Give it a try - it's a great experience, even for the kids.

with our son. We have taken him there since he was 5 and now he is 11, they have always been very receptive to his needs, tastes and likes.

Now that he fell in love with their Filet, he is always wanting to go there.
:rolleyes1

My dd had also started dining there when she was 5..and very picky about her eating habits then HOWEVER, Jiko made her try some new things like...salad, LOL, the salad on the kids menu. She discovered she liked "crunchy" lettuce and shredded carrots. (boy I was sure upset about that! ;)..finally a healthy choice)...and it's still on the menu (the romaine with tom & carrot-I eat her tomato as she still doesn't like it)..

Much of the time while we're in WDW she orders from the kids menus still and she's 12 (and she has quite the appetite). She looks forward to the kids' menu when we go and likes to choose her fav kid's items. And they're all nice sized portions.

Sometimes she will order off the adult menu but while she still enjoys the kids stuff and we aren't on the DDP I am also happy she orders from the kid's menus.

She has enjoyed the grilled chicken, salmon and mac n cheese from Jiko's kids' menus over the years.

As far as your adult child wanting to order something from the adult menu, I'm sure the chef will accommodate for any sauces on the side, etc as I always ask for sauces on the side (and I'm not a kid;)).

if your 10 year old is set on ordering a kid's menu item, then you can always say you will pay OOP for that and then save the 2 adult dining credits for another meal where the parents can enjoy a good meal along with paying for kiddie meals.

We've been to Jiko a few times with young kids. My son went first when he was 6, and most recently at age 9. We're going back this summer, when he'll be 11.

He really enjoys it. He was a little skeptical at first, and like most 6 years olds, he was pretty nervous to try anything new. They had many basic "kid friendly" options, like chicken strips and macaroni and cheese, on the kids menu. His first couple trips he stuck with that. Last trip, he was more willing to try our entrees (my wife loves the scallops, I always get the chermoula chicken).

Since that time, he's become a bit more of a gourmand (thanks to my constant cooking experiments), and he now enjoys lots of fish, steak (rare) and anything I make in my Morroccan tagine. He's really looking forward to going this summer, and I'm sure he'll want an "adult" entree of his own.

The kids in our travelling group always love a trip to Jiko, though, for the dessert: They have a great "make your own S'mores" dessert that the kids just love.
