When your kids are home for lunch, do you cook them something or do you just make them a sandwich (or do they make it themselves)?

I'm mainly thinking about this entire summer, when my DS11 has been home, he wants a cooked lunch every day. You know, like chicken fingers/fries, mac and cheese, pizza, quesadillas, etc. There are some days that I will indulge, but not every day. Sometimes, you just need to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and get over it! ;)

(I'm home, because I teach...but there are some days that I just don't feel like cooking lunch AND dinner! He's old enough to make himself a sandwich and grab some accompaniments!)

Mine are 11 and 13 and usually fix their own lunches (and breakfasts). Once in a while I will cook or we go out as a treat.

I have no problem with them making themselves something hot to eat--it doesn't have to be a sandwich.

IMO he's old enough to make any of those lunches himself. 11 is the age I started cooking and would be a great lesson for him (safety, following recipes, etc).

Maybe he can make lunch for you then!

Oh and I agree with this--the stuff you listed should easily be things he can prepare himself. Start teaching him:thumbsup2

Mine actually do a lot of cooking and baking from scratch. They find some of their best recipes on familyfun.com

Mine are 2 & 5. Most of they time they actually want/request sandwiches. The other times we usually have leftovers or occasionally I will make something for lunch if I am wanting something. When they are older I'm sure they will have more requests but for now they are usually OK with whatever.

Mine love for me to cook lunch for them. Breakfast too- if they can wrangle it. Sometimes I indulge them but other days I let them fend for themselves. They all know how to cook the basics, they just would rather I cook!

My little guy wants chicken fingers a lot. I fix them for him. Oldest likes pizza, he is 13, I make him turn on the over and get the pizza out set timer put it in etc. But when it comes to taking it out, I do it. OUr oven is new, we have one of those double oven things, but not wall ovens. It is so difficult, I don't know if it is the angle or what, and it is so hard to pull our the rack. I HATE THAT THING. Anyway, even if I have something on the bottom I make hubby get it out. I am 47 years old, I have had this oven 2 years and I have been burned more on this oven that I have in my entire life of backing and cooking which started with my mom when I was about 10.

Sorry, OT rant is over, thanks for listening.

Lunch? When my kids were little I was lucky if I could drag them inside long enough to eat a sandwich.. Finally wised up and made their lunches "to go" - LOL..:rotfl: They ate better that way anyhow - felt like they were having a "picnic" every day..

DGD (almost 12) makes whatever she wants for lunch down home.. Here at the lake, they pack their lunches because they spend the whole day down at the beach or out on the boat..

On the rare occasion that I eat lunch, it's always a sandwich.. Anything heavier and I would fall asleep!

THIS. This is my DS11 that I speak of! :lmao: He is so pathetic sometimes...like I don't feed him! (and yes, he can cook the basics himself, he just likes the way Mom does it! ;))

My kids (12 & 7) are not big sandwich eaters so I do make a hot lunch pretty much every day. Some days we may order a pizza or go to Wendy's, but normally, I cook.

Not to hijack the thread, but what are some easy lunch ideas? With the kids being home all summer, DDs are sick of mac and cheese, chicken fingers, spaghettios, and peanut butter. And now, with DD busy at work, I try to make simple things for dinner too, but I am SO out of ideas!

Cook lunch??:confused3 Lol, I remember when I married DH and he would tell me stories about how his mom cooked them a hot lunch every day. I was amazed..the closest my mom came to cooking lunch was heating up a can of soup. I am following in her footsteps:rotfl2:

One thing I tried this week that worked, is that I cooked an entire pound of bacon, and put it in a container in the fridge. My DS was able to make himself a BLT (he doesn't do the T part...LOL)

I also try to keep chopped up lettuce on hand, and he can make a salad.

Other than that, I'm fresh out of ideas as well. He's quite picky, and he likes what he likes. Unfortunately, sandwiches are not something that he likes.

My 10 and 12 year old get their own breakfast and lunch. Sometimes hot stuff, sometimes not.

I have four kids, and I highly encourage them to make their own lunches. Sometimes I will heat up leftovers and set it out with fruit so stuff will get eaten. If left totally to their own devices, they would eat cookies or chips for lunch so I do try to guide them. Once in a while I'll make a big plate of sandwiches and put them out with fruit. I'm a teacher too but the thought of cooking a lunch AND dinner every day would send me over the edge!

Our kids (14 and almost 12) are homeschooled so they have lunch at home all year.

They usually make their own lunches/sandwiches/wraps, but a couple times each week I'll do a quick cooked lunch for everyone for some variety. It's usually something simple such as heating up leftovers, making a frozen pizza, or soup.

Well, an 11 year old is perfectly capable of making a sandwich, or making mac and cheese, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, etc., himself, so whatever he wanted to make, I'd let HIM make.

My boys age 8 and 9 make their own breakfast each day. Many days they make their own lunch. They usually make things like tuna salad, sandwich wraps, soup, heated up leftovers, breakfast for lunch etc.

I agree with the pp who said she has the double oven (not a wall oven) and its hard to get things in and out. We have the same. For that reason I don't let my boys put things into our out of the oven without wearing large oven mitts. Even then I usually only let them use the top oven. I can just picture them falling onto the door on the lower oven.

I'm a SAHM and do hot lunches a lot. I make a batch or two of soup each week. that way DH always has something good to take for lunch too. DD 18 months and I will often have soup and paninis or soup and a pasta salad. I also plan my dinners so that I space ones that yield good leftovers. For example I often make roasted balsamic veggies as a side, then we use them to make veggie and hummus wraps the next day. DD doesn't like all the normal kid food (chicken fingers, pb&J, mac and cheese) so we do go a little fancier for lunch than most. It can get tiring at times but I figure it's putting good food in our bellies and developing her taste buds for healthy things so it is worth it.

DSs 12 and 14 cook all of the foods you listed, and love making it themselves.

Your DS can do it himself. Just tell him to make his own lunch and DON'T GIVE IN. If he's hungry, he'll figure it out.

Your future DIL will love you for doing it. She won't have to go on the Disboards in 20 years and complain about how her evil MIL spoiled her DH by making whatever foods he wanted, and now he won't step foot in the kitchen to make a simple sandwich. :lmao:
