Kidney stones...

I had my first last night...and I think I would rather have food poisoning, experience back labor, and break bones before I ever have that happen again.

It really and truly is WORSE than childbirth. I think I wished for death at least a dozen times last night.

Been there

Done that

never again

I was just told this is the likely culprit for my misery Saturday night, while having another "attack" following up at the doctor's this morning. Trying to get an appt with the urologist right now to confirm. It is horrible!

they do indeed suck, my dr told me when i had my episode many years ago that it is comparable to child birth and my wife laughed so it is nice to hear someone else say it hahahaha

havent had a major attack since but i religously drink 100+ ounces of water EVERY day now.

You can tell your wife that it is WORSE than childbirth :scared1:. Honestly, childbirth was nothing compared to this. I hope I never, ever have one ever again!

I'm still feeling like crud today...just totally exhausted.

I'm 46 years old, and have had kidney stones on & off since I was 10 years old. Yes, 10 years old! My first 'attack' happened on Halloween 1973. Due to the severe pain (plus I kept passing out), they though I ingested poison candy. I was in the hospital for two weeks before they found the culprit.

Now I think I'm used to it. I've had a few lithotripsies (sp?) and recently found out I have two more stones - one on each side. Ugh.

Good luck...drink LOTS of water. I feel your pain.

.

Truly is a pain like no other! I hope to never experience it again.

I have had them twice. I hope to never have them again, but at least the second time you know what it is when it starts.

I wouldn't wish kidney stones on my worst enemy

My dr told me that he had women come in who'd been through natural childbirth who subsequently had kidney stones and it was unanimous--ALL of them would much rather go through the births again.

I have a disturbingly high tolerance for pain and I openly wished for death when I had mine. I'd gone to the emergency room the night before because I was also having pain that wasn't limited to just the normal kidney stone related area, and received a prescription for Vicodin. The pain promptly went away (without taking any drugs) for about 24 hours, which is when it came back worse than ever before. I ended up taking 2 Vicodin about an hour apart before venturing to my parents house (I may have been 31 years old, but damned if I didn't want my mommy!).

Went straight back to the ER and they gave me a shot of something that STILL didn't touch the pain. When I finally got into a room to see the doctor and got an IV started for morphine and it still hurt like the devil, my mom demanded that the doctor give me something else. The doctor said, "Ma'am, if we give her anything else, she'll die," to which I replied, "BRING IT!" God, that was the worst pain I have ever felt in my entire life, and I include a broken forearm with multiple fractures and knee surgery in that statement. Unfortunately, they saw on the MRI that I have 'em in both kidneys even as we speak, so they're like twin ticking time bombs in there. :sad2:

As mine were caused by chronic dehydration, I now force myself to drink as much water as possible every day. So far, so good.

yep i would rather have 20 epidural needles in my spine, and go thru child birth and c-sections again instead of having kidney stones!!!:sad2: Our doctor told us to drink lots of water with lemon juice. Concentrated lemon juice helps to keep them from forming.

I've given birth twice and have had 7 kidney stones, the pain is completely comparable! At least with a baby you have something to show for it! :lmao: And I can't imagine going through it as a guy, it's got to travel a little farther! ;)

Would definitely rather give birth again than have more kidney stones...and I've had 3 kids :)

The worst pain I have ever felt!

I had 2 on one side, 1 on the other, when I ended up in the ER.

I was dehydrated and had low potassium...wow those potassium pills are huge!

Which is...? I really NEED to know before I go to the doctor tomorrow. I sometimes get nauseating, stabbing pain in my right side, at waist level, when I need to go to the bathroom badly. I've been told it's kidney stones (with no stones showing on an MRI) and that it's 'just' (unrelated) muscle spasms. I think BOTH are wrong, but if somebody doesn't mind giving me a DISagnosis... ;) Thanks!

It's tough to say. MOST of my pain was around the back and side (more to the side as the stone started along its merry little journey :headache: ), but I also had some more like in my stomach area. I could just have been so nauseated from the pain that maybe that's some of what I was feeling; I don't remember. The doctor that I saw the first night said I was presenting like someone who could possibly have either appendicitis or kidney stones, so I guess whatever symptoms I had were somewhat unusual. Turned out just to be plain ol' stones, though. Ugh.

I've never had them, but have watched my husband go through them 3 times. I can tell you there was no mistaking SEVERE-- bring a tough-guy down crying pain.

Well, it's definitely ear-inducing "want to die" pain, kilee - although I admit to being somewhat of a wimp, never mind that I flew from Las Vegas to Boston, then took a taxi to my car, then drove another twenty miles, with a newly-fractured rib :).

But it doesn't last real long - a minute or two - and it NEVER MOVES. I'd think with a kidney stone, it hurts all the way from, well, the kidney until it's out of the system, right? I really just want to make sure this is what it's NOT, that I'm miserable overall for some other reason. Thanks!

My first, horrible praying-for-the-merciful-release-of-death pain lasted for probably 3-4 hours before I had enough morphine in my system to take the edge off and was largely located basically right where my kidney is--in my back and off to the side. From there, I could feel the pain gradually move around to the side and then to the front and, um, southward. I don't know how that level of pain was because I was hopped up on everything they'd give me, but I could still feel some discomfort as it moved along. But yeah, it definitely lasted longer than a few minutes. It was pretty much constant agony, with a slight lessening every now and then (but still severely unpleasant).

Agreed..

It's enough to make grown men drop to their knees, scream in agony, cry their eyes out, and actually black out from the pain.. NOT fun!!

Hope you feel better and don't ever have to experience that again..

you need to find out what is causing the stones to form so you can prevent them in the future. i didn't have 1 or 2 stones, i had tons of itty bitty ones. it's called sludge. like my urine was full of sand. i had terrible kidney infections for a long time. and gouty arthritis too (same cause). i have had to watch what i eat and take a daily medication. i had also been told about lemon juice so i drink at least one glass everyday. but it can't be from concentrate. i drink simply lemonade.
hope you find the cause and have luck preventing any more stones.
