Kidney Stone 5 weeks before Trip!

I have never heard that soda or anything of the sort causes stones. My husband has celiac's disease and is lactose intolerant so basically eats nothing fun and he has all kinds of problems with them. I think you are just predisposed.

Liz

Not eating dairy can cause them. Also eating too much salt.

I am an operating room nurse. I would take him to a urologist ASAP if he has not passed the stone yet. They can do an ultrasound or an IV dye xray to see if he still has it. If not, I would suggest having surgery to remove it. This is an in/out procedure. If he still has it, anything can cause it to move and cause horrible pain. Take care.

First my thoughts are w/ your son. I hope for a quick passing for him.

My husband has had them twice. The first time. The symptoms came on pretty quickly and it passed later the same night. He seemed run down for the next day or so, but then he was fine.

The second time, well that was another story and I'm sure a 1 in a million situation. Ironically it has a WDW connection.

We were driving home to NY after our 10 day WDW trip. The morning we're set to leave he said he didn't feel very good. Thought he had a stomach bug. We stopped multiple times, but he just kept getting worse. Right around the GA/SC border he told me to find him an ER- he was in a lot of pain. I got off the interstate and went to a gas station. They told pretty much I had to go about an hr in either direction to get to an ER. So, rather than backtrack, we kept moving forward.

They diagnosed him w/ a kidney stone there- watched him for awhile, pushed fluids, gave him a script for pain meds. Then let him go. We got home the next day. Anyhow, over the next few days dh was on pain meds the entire time w/ not much relief. He ended up being admitted so they could put a stent in. The stone was not passing and they could not do the litho for a few more days. About 48 hrs after they put in the stent, he got very ill. The urologist kept telling me he was on Cipro and he'd be fine, he just had to hang in there. I went to work and came home on my morning break to check on him. He was pretty much inconscience and I took his temp. It was 105.1. I started to freak out and had him taken back to the hospital. Turns out he developed a MRSA infection in his urinary track. He was in critical condition for the next week. Spent an additional week in the hospital. Then 6 more weeks on homecare IV treatments w/ antibiotics for the infection. Now 8.5 weeks later they finally did surgery to remove the stone. He was no longer a candidate for litho.

He then goes 5 days later to have the stent removed along w/ the central line in his chest for the antibiotics. 2 days later he developed severe arm pain and swelling. Turns out he had a blood clot in his upper arm, right near his chest from the central line. Back into the hospital he went.

All this stemmed from a kidney stone. It turned into a 3 month health ordeal and crisis. Like I said a 1 in a million shot that it would go so wrong.

NOT TO BE MEAN, BUT THIS IS NOT THE STORY I WOULD WANT TO HEAR IF IT WERE MY 13 YEAR OLD GOING THROUGH THIS RIGHT NOW :confused3

O.K. so I have had lots of stones. When I was pregnant with my first I went to the hospital thinking I was in labor...they gave me no meds, assuming I was in labor. They kept giving me water and I kept throwing it up....come to find out I had a kidney stone. If I passed it, it was prior to them giving me a strainer. It was terrible pain. After having an ultrasound they said I had a total of 5 stones.

2 years later I had another ultrasound for other reasons, and the nurse called and told me she had bad news, I had 3 kidney stones.....that was great news for me!! So apparently I had passed 2 w/o knowing it.

Go to the hospital w/pain probably 3 years after that with kidney stone pain, blood in my urine. They gave some mild pain reliever and sent me home. Later that night I am back at the ER. Now stronger meds and anti-vomiting medicine. Sent me home. Next morning back at the ER, now hooked up to an IV with morphine and it was stuck. They had to get a urologist to break it up. Fantastic! Now I am out of pain!

I have been back to the er with "twinges" in my back and blood in my urine. They said that sometimes a kidney stone that may stay for years, just moves around in your kidney, hits the wall of the kidney, you pass a little bit of blood, but it may not pass. Or sometimes a fragment of the kidney stone may break off, hit the side of the urinary track, cause blood, and you will pass it, but not even know it.

So moral of the story is, he may not pass it for YEARS, or may be tonight. If it is still in his kidney there is no way to tell when he will pass it. I think I have about 7 total sitting in my kidneys.

Go to doctor, have them prescribe some strong pain medication, and definitely some medicine called Zofran for nausea. With kidney stones, typically comes vomiting.

If you end up in Disney or are at home passing the stone, and cannot control the pain with pill medicine, insist on him staying at the hospital with IV meds. There is no reason for a child to suffer through that pain.

With me when I kept returning to the er, they finally admitted me because I was just going to keep coming back!!!

The previous posters are right when there are all different make ups of a stone. Some people just have the tendency...like me :scared:

Go and enjoy your vacation, there is not much you can do, except be prepared with drugs and quickest route to a child friendly ER. :confused3

UGH I feel for your poor son.

I have had numerous stones over the past 3 years, a stent and lithroscopy to break it up. My last appointment with my urologist after I had passed a 3 mm stone showed yet another stone has to pass. That was in June. My best advice to you is to go to WDW (I did in Sept) and just make sure you have meds for him and a plan. (rental car, number of ER etc.) There really is no way of knowing how long it can take until it is the kidney. I had blood in the urine for over 2 months my last stone. every time it moves you will bleed a little. then go clear and on and on.
I hope everything works out for your family and he is free of that evil stone as soon as possible.:goodvibes

I have kidney stones too. I never knew about them until I was pregnant. I've passed two and have a lot more. The biggest one is 5mm. I've had it almost a year. It hasn't moved any and rarely bothers me. Your sons might not hurt much more hopefully. They did an ultrasound and said since it wasn't blocking anything they would just watch it and no surgery!! I also think lemonade helps! I drink it all the time. I never drink soda or have caffine either. They told me not to eat salt or peanut butter. The dr. said young people can pass them easier and not hurt that bad. One of the ones I passed I didn't even know until I saw it. You can send a sample of urine in and they'll test it and see what is causing them. I know they are awful some days but don't get worried yet! Maybe he'll pass it soon!

I highly recommend the cranberry juice. I keep some 100% cranberry/grape juice at work & drink a small glass every day mid-morning.

Over the years my husband has had dozens of Kidney Stones. When he has a kidney stone "flare up" it will normally be in the spring or in the fall. In the past he has had the lithotripsy (sp) procedure several times and one time they went in (no incision) to get the stone with a basket.....Now at the first instance he will begin drinking tons of water (bottled only since our tap water contains high amounts of something that only contribute to the formation of MORE kidney stones) If I ever see any beer in the fridge then I know he has a kidney stone....but your 13 year old is too young for that.
