Kicking Myself Repeatedly

Everyone knows 7DMT is the second hardest FP+ to snag these days. Well, we're here on vacation right now and I let my in-laws dictate that we change park days and move MK from yesterday to today. Well, in doing so, we scrapped a 14 guest FP for Mine Train and the closest I've come to getting anything is a single FP the day we leave.

No one is looking forward to a 75 min wait time but it seems that unless anyone can tell me if/when day-of FP's become available to schedule, we'll be stuck waiting.

I am so kicking myself.

Sounds like you should be kicking your in-laws instead of yourself:rotfl:

ok, you posted it. we all want to know!! whydid they want to switch the day?

I know in laws can be tricky but in your shoes I would have said no (at least no for us you(in laws) can do what ever you want)

Go on at closing we did this several times the first week of June.. wait posted was 60 and sometimes 85 minutes but really was only 25 to 30 if the line not out the gate it's worth a wait, however all the way to the gate is probably closer to a 45 minute wait. :)

What reason was there for the switch that was worth 75+ minutes of everyone's time?

We are traveling with a mixed group. My wife's family is the basic core, but my sister and my wife's sister's boyfriend's nieces came as well. The nieces have never been here before and were meeting their mother (who came separately) to see MK for the first time. Consensus was two days of MK in a row would be boring (I disagreed but my MIL doesn't like rocking the boat and tries to please everyone so she agreed everyone could do DHS on Thursday instead). We could have gone along separately but my wife felt like we'd be causing more trouble than it was worth.

Two days in a row is boring? :confused3

Just go to different sections each day.

Ugh that sucks. I hope the posted wait time is shorter than expected!

Are you traveling as a 14 person group the entire time?

I think I would try, very hard, for a 3 person FP. Sure, it's a group trip. But it's also your own family's vacation. You can splinter off from the group for as long as it takes your family to do something that matters to you.

it's late in the process for you. I'm now a member of the tough Disney love club. Because of a trip JUST LIKE the one you are describing. It made thing horrible for me. People thinking they could just express a preference a week or a month before we leave.

With any group that is larger than my immediate family. I do trips by publishing a google calendar. I will-
o make ADRs and include anyone that wants to be included
o make FP+ for anyone that wants to "goto the same park"
o do any planning for events like desert party
o include any special things, like make sure we get to A&E, or are in a good spot for MSEP

But once I make my plans they are set... if you decide you want to do something else, then you are on your own.

If you don't want to eat at Kona on Thursday, then you are on your own.
If you don't show up by 6:15 for Boma on Friday (for the 6:25 ADR), I don't include you when I check in.

Every group has a cell phone these days, so if you are running ~5 minutes late and want to hook up you can call/text me.

We're doing a family reunion: our household plus that of my brother in law and sister in law. My kids are the only ones who aren't adults. We're at the Yacht Club, everyone else is at Caribbean Beach.

We're doing one meal together as a group most days, usually dinner. And we have late afternoon fastpasses together. (I made a list of "for everyone" , "for most" and "for some" and then we worked out the FPs.) Once or twice we have FPs for different parks, but most days those are together. I got us a Memory Maker package; everyone else was thrilled and offered to pay a third. (I would have gotten it anyway, so it was up to them.)

We'll do rope drop, and anyone who wants to join us is welcome. We'll do the mid afternoon break; I'm not sure who is planning to stay in the parks. One family has the Deluxe DDP, so they'll be doing more breakfasts and lunches.

I guess my point is that we don't have to be joined at the hip for 8 days for it to be a successful family reunion. And it's unfair for your inlaws to expect you to alter your plans, and your family's priorities, for the sake of the group. Disney vacations are expensive, and family vacation time is precious. Don't be so willing to give up on what's important you your family to accomodate the group.

Meanwhile I imagine your in-laws are having fun, while you are glued to a phone repeatedly checking for FPs.

OP, it would be really hard to resist giving the in-laws a dose of "I told you so". Especially as you wait through that looooooong line. But you're going to have to make like Elsa and let it go. Then file this in the category of "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." And just know not to repeat that mistake.

Some vacations are for spontaneity. Disney definitely isn't one of them any more.

MK boring two days in a row? :faint: Oy. That should have been your first clue that their judgment is off. ;) Although I imagine it will seem a bit boring as you wait through that line.

Just as an FYI, keep in mind the Mine Train closes when it storms. And it storms most afternoons in FL this time of year. I would try to plan to avoid that ride in the afternoon.

This is the best advice. I learned at the age of 14 that group/family vacations can not work if you try to get everyone to do the same thing, at the same time everyday. I do exactly what JCO said. If you want to come with me for my plans great otherwise you know where I will be and we can meet up later. Try to enjoy the rest of your trip and I hope you find the FP you want. If I were you I would do what a PP said and just find them FP for your immediate family. I know it won't be fun to tell the rest of the group, but you already changed your plans for them and that made you unhappy. They can feel free to stand in line if they really want to ride it.

HAHA, now that is what I would likely do! Although we don't plan ADRs but with park days and FP+ I would get that planned for sure for a big group.

This is a good reminder of why I don't travel with extended family to Orlando.
The beach, a lake, sure.

Good luck OP!

I think at this point the so called damage is done. If you continue to kick yourself you'll only feel resentful and this will not be a good vacation. Take it as a lesson learned. You and your wife have a daughter that is a year old. Focus on her reactions to everything. I'd also be focusing on the grandparents and her and the rest of the family. Life is short they won't be around forever. I doubt WDW is going away.

I'm willing to bet that you will be back to WDW sometime during her childhood. Then just make it a trip for your immediate family.
