Keyless entry for my home

With kids as careless as they are with keys, I have been thinking about getting one of those keyless entry keypads to access the house. Anyone have any experience with these? I cannot figure out how to get one, how much I can expect to pay, or whether they are effective. Any info is appreciated. Thank you.

Yep, we have one. They work great. You should be able to find one (assuming you have a major brand name garage door opener) at a Lowe's or Home Depot. It took maybe 15 minutes to set up and program.

We have them at the apts we are moving too. I can't wait to try them out. I think it is so high tech. I mean my fi has it on his car but I have yet to see it on a house.

yep - VERY convienent for when one locks themselves out of the house!

you can find them at most hardware stores - but I KNOW I've seen them at Sears.

just be sure to set the pin to something your kids can remember...my DH set our old one to his PIN...so I never knew it. He set our new one to something I'd remember...now he can never remember it.

be sure that if you normally lock the door between the garage and the basement/mudroom/whatever that you hid a key in the garage too.

I've gotten into the garage before after being locked out...but not the house. heheheh

oh wait - are you talking about a keypad garage door opener, or one that works the locks at, say, your front door? I could only guess that that would be a big $$$$ investment

Bob--are you saying that yours opens your garage door? This is something we can do ourselves, or do we need the garage door opener intallers to come and do it?

Yep, you can do it yourself and it'll open your garage door (assuming we're talking about the same thing?).

You mount it on the side of your garage, program the code in and press and hold down a button on the opener motor that memorizes the code. That's it.

Sorry, I just reread your OP -- maybe we're not talking about the same thing. If you're talking about a keypad for the front (or side) of the house, that, I would assume, would be more involved than the garage door keypad I thought you were talking about.

just remember to change the batteries - nothing like getting stuck outside with a dead battery! heheh

Innoventions at Epcot featured an entry system that uses your fingerprint to open the door. Multiple prints can be stored into memory. No codes to remember.

The lockers at USF use the same technology.

I have used those lockers at USF. What a good idea. I wonder if it is affordable in the residential market.

We have a digital keypad to our garage, and we have a digital deadbolt to get in our house.

We love having both of them! The deadbolt is a Weiser brand which we got from Menards. They now have several different styles (with a remote, without a remote etc.) they are around $75.00

We have had both for about 7 or 8 years. Love them...love them...love them...

We have a keypad for our garage and one for our front door. They work great! I love not having to carry a key if I am heading out on a walk or something. It is very convenient, and would recommend it to anyone!
