Um...what exactly is to be gained by this? Instead of tapping your Magicband, which hardly seems to be a chore itself, now it unlocks as soon as you are in range? So the door will unlock if you are halfway down the hall walking towards your room?

I can see if you could access the bluetooth within the magicband using your phone and remotely unlocking your door (to let someone in if you are in a different location), that could be useful, if that is what will be happening. But my initial reaction, digesting the difference between a tap and being within 10 feet? Hardly seems groundbreaking, IMO...

EDIT: Now being reported there will be no bluetooth in MB. Guests will use their phones for this service.

Am sure there is much to be gained by Disney all over the property that makes it easier/less expensive for them to track you. Could be the bluetooth connect will be much easier to implement than straight up RFID. And resort wide tracking would be their goal.

Agreed in that there must be a bigger benefit to Disney. My response was more to the fact that it doesn't seem all that beneficial to guests. Interesting notes about the door being unlocked while you are inside the room, and does that also mean that anyone outside your door when you are within range of your door could barge in and lock you out (by using the deadbolt or other latch)? A reach, perhaps, but still a security issue.

Can definitely see it being easier for Disney to access your room, coupled with the room inspections...

My friend has this technology in her home and it only works from the outside, the doors stay locked even though her key fob is on a table right by the door.

works that way in cars, too. My mother's car unlocks if she's in the vicinity, outside the car, with her fob. Doors locked from the inside stay locked.

It's really only a benefit to people who want to carry their MB instead of wear it, or wear their removable MB puck as a fob. Resort personnel will still be able to enter rooms the same way they can now. this won't make it easier except that they won't have to wear anything for access.

Does their fob work from a distance? My DD had fobs at a couple places and they had to touch just like the MB.

For the guest, the only thing I can think of is people like me whose height, arm length, and wrist mobility make it so I generally take off the MB (if I was wearing it) to open the door. Otherwise it feels super awkward and I don't like it.

(and also for those with disabilities that make it difficult or even impossible to do both actions)


That said, i don't *like* this. I'm perfectly fine taking off the MB as I walk down the hall (no extra time at the door is taken) or getting it out of my bag etc. Or getting a card if I choose to do that instead of using the MB. I don't need more bluetooth in my life.

No way I'll resist, I'll jiggle, pull ... then I'll walk away and want to walk back and do it again SO ... then my MB will open it.

Won't we all look silly, jiggle with one outstretched arm while the other arm is outstretched the other direction ... and hope we have a wing span that the blue tooth can't read.

You'd think .... unless you have to have it within inches and so what really is the point? Disney has other uses for this, this is not for the guest's benefit.

It’s listed as an unconfirmed rumor. My magic bands have shipped for my 1/27 trip so I’d assume if this is true my bands would have it. I guess time will tell.

Hmmmm, they just edited the story to say its an unconfirmed rumor. I had to reread it to make sure I wasn't losing it......I'm checking in on the 14th but we'll probably get updates before then.

Magic bands already have long range rfid in them (for ride photos)... not sure why Bluetooth would be an upgrade.

My car works that way too, except it only unlocks the side you're on at first. For example, as a driver, I can only unlock my side, and then a second unlock attempt unlocks my whole car. It's a safety thing - that way in a dark parking lot someone else can't hop in your car with you, etc.

As a female traveler who frequently travels alone, that makes me uncomfortable. There's been times where I've hurried to my room because someone has seemed a little "off" nearby. I don't like the idea of someone else possibly being able to open my door before I get to it, etc. Seems like a security risk. I'm sure they have thought of work-arounds though... it's too easy to see the security issues.

I think it’s a very-close proximity thing.

I know it may seem unnecessary for able-bodied visitors, but this makes a lot of sense to me for those with disabilities and their family members. Pushing my daughter in her wheelchair and my husband pushing my son in a stroller, we juggled quite a bit with unlocking and opening the door. If you are a person with a disability who is alone, those doors are tough. Anything to make our lives easier is a good thing, even if it doesn't apply to you. I don't love some of the comments on here either from the able-bodied guests, honestly. "Lifting your wrist to the door...wow" is something you take for granted. Feel lucky that's a breeze for you.
