We are considering vacationing in Key West this fall for our anniversary. Has anyone been there? If yes, what fun things did you do?

I was really disappointed with my Key West vacation. Mainly because we're there during the record low temp days. None of the water sports activities were open, so nothing (literally) to do. The bars and restaurants were OK, very touristy. We eventually got to parasail (great!), but that's it.

I enjoyed the Hemingway house. I enjoyed the conch. And the drive down there. But other than that, nothing. I think we;re there just during the really bad week.

Hope you have a better time.

I love Key West.
Of course you have to walk Duval St. Have a drink in Sloppy Joes. Have a drink at Capt. Tony's Saloon (the first and original Sloppy Joes). Mallory Square for sunset celebration. Eat at Blue Heaven. Great beach area- Ft. Zachary Taylor beach. You can see the Disney Magic when she's in port. Eat a key lime pie on a stick. The "Blonde Giraffe" has the best key lime pie! Visit The Chicken Store. See the Southernmost point (closest U.S. is to Cuba). Wine taste at the Key West winery. Lift a gold bar at Mel Fishers. Visit the Key West cemetary.
The best thing I ever did- Take a sea plane to the Dry Tortugas. This was my dd6's first plane ride. It was great! You see huge sea turtles from the air. There is a national park there. An old fort. My dd6 snorkeled for the first time along the wall of the old fort.

The best thing that happened when I was in Key West was a surprise concert by Jimmy Buffett on Greene St.. It was free and I was about 10 ft away from him.

When I was 1 year old!! Sorry, I'm no help, but I'd love to go there again. I've heard it's beautiful!

We went there in the winter of 1999 for one week. It is beautiful!!!!!! Oh and the weather was amazing! We had a nice time, it was very relaxed and low key. I was 5 weeks pregnant and morning sickness was beginning to set in, so it HAD to be low key. LOL We saw all the main sites, went snorkeling, Hemingway House (fun if you like cats!)... We stayed at a bed and breakfast called The Conch House-very nice!!!!!::yes::

I was there a couple of years ago. Did the Dry Tortugas also, but the boat ride made me feel very sick, so you may want to take Bonine if you do this. Loved Hemingway house and all the kitties on Mallory Square. :teeth: :wave2:

Must see CatMan in Mallory Square:D

My family and I drove down there from Orlando for 3 days last summer. It's a very nice place, lots of scooter riders, but there really isn't much to do there. I think I remember it was hard to find a public beach. Everyone goes to the "Sunset Celebration" every night - it's really not THAT special of a sunset. And of course, there's the little beachside shops which are fun to look in, and there's a Hog's Breath Saloon. Chickens run wild in the streets down there, it's hilarious. Key West is worth a couple of days, but probably not a whole week.

I LOVE Key West!! Don't go there if you are expecting a lot of hustle and bustle - it is a place to relax and have fun! Of course, having good weather will count towards a good vacation, just like any other destination.

If you like being outside, enjoy the beach, enjoy sitting back to eat and drink, shop, you will love it. There is much to do there!

I recommend you stay as close to Duval Street as possible, rent a scooter each for you and hubby and park your car for the entire trip! The scooters themselves are fun. It made my husband and I feel like teenagers.

Be sure to look up the website and read all about the possible fantastic adventures. Of course, you have to catch the sunset celebration at the end of Duval Street at least one night!!

Have fun!!:teeth:

I think the sunset is beautiful.

We stopped there as a port of call on a Disney Cruise & we weren't impressed. We aren't drinkers... so that cuts out a lot! LOL

Next time we cruise and have KW as a port of call... we'll just stay on the ship.

Key West is funky and you have to go there with an open mind. If you are looking for a "South Beach" type of place or a real tropical paradise, don't go. But if you are looking for something different and a place with a sense of humor that doesn't take itself too seriously - this is it!

My favorite memory waswhile eating outside at the Blue Heaven Restaurant and all of a sudden a barking dog came running through chasing chickens. The dog was followed by a barefoot woman in a bikini top yelling in a foreign language. It was just hilarious. Everyone just kept eating like it was an everyday occurence...which in Key West it probably is!

Anyway, we really like it but I agree on 3 or 4 days max.

After we finished eating at Blue Heaven one evening, we left the restaurant, turned the corner, and in the middle of the street the locals are....... bowling! With real bowling pins and bowling balls! Big crowd. They were having a great time. Funniest thing I ever came across.

Uh oh.. We are not big drinkers or partyers. We do like to have fun, eat, shop, tours. Key West looked tropical to me? Would you say it's better than Ft.Lauderdale?

if you head down, be sure to stop at Bahia Honda state park. One of the few natural sand beaches in the area and was voted a top ten beach in the world.

The hamburger at hog's breath saloon was the best I've ever had.

Key West is one of my husband's favorite places - and he is a fairly conservative guy. He has been twice (this year and last year - I went with him last year). It is a crazy place - very laid back, no rules, anything goes. We did a lot of walking and shopping. We ate in several really good restaurants. The Chicken Store is fun, DH did the aquarium with DS this year and enjoyed it, they loved Mallory Square. You can tour the Truman Little White House and walk through Truman Annex. They didn't do the Hemingway House, but I've heard it's very interesting. There are a lot of local artists. The scooters look like fun. DH would go back in a heartbeat. (It's almost too laid back for me :teeth: )
