We are sailing in 2 weeks and I had planned to do the tram/trolley tour in Key West but I heard that they dont stop anywhere, they just drive you by. I want to be able to go into the places and look around.

Should I cancel the tour and just do it by ourselves? We have a 5 and 6 year but they are good walkers. Also, how would I go about seeing everything? Can I pick up a map?

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I've not been on a DCL cruise, but I have been to Key West. If I recall correctly, most everything a tourist would want to see is either on Duval Street, or within a perpendicular block of Duval. I remember easily walking around Key West's old town area.

We did the Conch Train tour 2 yrs ago & my kids were bored out of their minds (7 & 10 at the time) :sad2: so this past January when we went we decided to forego any shore excursions & just "wing it". Like the previous poster said everything you really need to see is within walking distance. We did the aquarium, shipwreck museum & the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum (my DH is a history nut so he loves these type of things). I do believe there is one trolley company that allows you to get on & off at your leisure & see sights outside of the main town, i.e. Ernest Hemingway's house, the Southern most tip of the US, etc. You can always hop on once you get there. So no need to book ahead in Key West. Also make sure you stop in the little strip mall next to the aquarium, they have a little bakery/candy store in there that is the "Home of the 1/2 lb Chocolate Chip Cookie" you MUST try!! Also I recommend the conch fritters & frozen Key Lime pie!!!! Can't wait to go back!!! Enjoy!!

Hello there - as just about everyone knows, I am an ol' conch (konk) from Key West - I would most definitly take the trolly which is the one that will ride you around Key West and you can get on and off for one charge - the conch train is nice, but it can be boring for children. I, myself, like to take it every so often just to see what a "newbie" tells the passengers - its very interesting and most of the time they tell stories that I have NEVER heard including from my 4 generation family handed down - remember Key West is a 2 by 4 island and walking isn't that bad - most tourist stay around Whitehead, Duval and Simonton Street - sometimes they wander up on Truman Avenue which is also known as US1 - there is a Chamber of Commerce right there where the Disney will be - it is Mallory Square and there you can get any information you could want including all types of coupons, etc.
Do it on your own - you will save monies and still have a great time.
ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
