can someone recommend a nice hotel near the main attractions in Key West?
Do not mind spending the money if it is a decent hotel, prefer something on the smaller side.

I just got back. This time I stayed at the Best Western Hibiscus which is near Southernmost Point, one mile from the bars. I'm a walker, so I didn't mind that... and the day that it rained, I just ubered into town. Small-ish, great pool, free breakfast, and free parking (huge plus!)

La Concha is a bigger hotel but more centrally located right on Duval but pricey and have to pay a lot for parking. I believe there is a new Margaritaville hotel but I've never been - it's down near where the cruise ships dock. Other than that, a lot of the Key West hotels that are very close to everything are smaller B&B's our boutiques. As you first get into town there are several larger chain hotels - cheaper because they're farther away and require a cab/uber. I've stayed at the Hyatt before a few years ago, but it seems like they're now switching toward a timeshare/condo model ($$$).

Depending on when you go, book early! Winter is peak season and they'll sell out. Hotels can easily be $500+ a night depending on when you go. The little Best Western we stayed in was $350 a night, but that was over MLK weekend.

The Margaritaville is new in name only. It used to be a Westin. All the hotels in that area by the pier would be considered the most luxurious, with prices to match. I have only stayed in one room in my 5 trips there. Master Suite #1 in the Curry Mansion. It's right off of Duval in the middle of everything. Free parking, breakfast made to order included, free pour-your-own drinks for 2 hours every evening. This particular room has a giant rooftop balcony. The resin furniture has since been replaced with nice upholstered stuff.

I didn't get to stay, but I heard the guest houses on/near Duval Street are the traditional ways to stay in Key West.

We have stayed at the Best Western Hibiscus, which was fine but at the quieter end of the island. We have also stayed at the Westin (now Margaritaville). Loved the location, but I think it has gotten pricey. Since then we have rented a townhome in Truman Annex. If you are going for 7 nights or more, you might want to consider that. There are condos, townhomes and houses available with a variety of price ranges.

There are several other hotels at that end such as Ocean Key, The Pier House, The Marker. And there are so many B & B's that people love (Curry Mansion that Squirlz mentioned being one of them). You can check out reviews of those on trip advisor. We are heading back in May to stay in the townhome again. Can't wait!

If you are military, check the options at Trumbo Point and Truman Annex.

No matter where you end up, you may want to consider renting bikes. It makes it easy and fun to get to the various sites around town. We used Eaton Bikes. They will deliver and pick-up, and they will make sure the bikes are properly adjusted. They provide helmets, locks, and lights with the rental.

Wow...didn't know the Westin changed to Margaritaville. We have stayed at that Westin a few times and always loved the location.

I have been 3 times and stayed at 3 different places.
Sheraton Suites was nice but too far form Duval St. I had a car but used the shuttle. The good thing about the Sheraton is it is across the street form a nice beach.
Southernmost Motel. This is at the quiter end of Duval Street and was a good place. There are a couple of different buildings and rtoom configurations. We really liked ours.
Best Western Hibiscus was good to. Nice sized room and as stated by a PP it is also at the quiet end of Duval.
I have always wanted to stay at the Hilton which is right at the busy end of Duval and looks really nice.

Loved the Ocean Key Resort. It's at the end of Duval St. right next to Mallory Square.

Just got back last night. We stayed at The Reach, which is a Waldorf Astoria resort. Absolutely stunning. Small resort with a natural sand beach. About a block or so off Duval but on the Atlantic side Rented bikes so everything on the island was within easy reach. Priced it out and this resort was about the price we paid last time at a small B&B without all the amenities. Plan to stay there again and again
