Probably a silly question, but the last time I went to WDW, I had a package deal and when we checked in, we got our KTTW card, which was the key to our room and our entrance to the park, etc.

This time, we'll be staying on our DVC points (first DVC trip!), and just buying tickets separately. Also, my family will be joining us, and since they live in Florida, they'll be purchasing the Florida resident tickets.

Question is this: once you get there, do they link your park admission to your room key? Is that how they know you are staying on property for Extra Magic Hour purposes?

For EMH, they ask to see your room key at the ride entrances--your park ticket doesn't have to be attached to it and, afaik, you can use your park ticket to get into any park as long as the park's open and it's not a party night (like MVMCP). You can eat and shop in any park as long as the park's open even if you're not staying on site. It's just the rides that are involved in EMH.

ETA: You can get your tickets put on your room key, though, if you'd like to have one object instead of 2. The concierge at your resort can do it or you can have it done at Guest Services in any park.

No they are not automatically linked. For EMH you may show your room key upon entry. When you say buying tickets separately, do you mean once you arrive, or pre-purchasing them from a discounter?

If you purchase them while checking in, they will be added to your room key. If you buy them from a discounter, you may present your room key and unused tickets at the resort concierge desk, and they can re-issue the room keys with the discounted tickets added to the keys.
