Key Lime Pie Question

This is one of those questions about the small details.

Some time ago I experienced my first key kime pie at OKW. Olivia's was just closing, so they told me to go to the bar area adjacent to the restaurant. I ordered the pie. When I received it the pie was round in shape, about 3" in diameter. Very pleasant tasting, definitely an experience for a future trip.

Recently we visited WDW for a swimming-only trip and stayed off-site. While there I wanted to revisit my gastronomical experience. This time I went to the snack bar near Olivia's and ordered the pie there. What I expected was a small pie like before, but what I got was your standard slice of pie. Though nice I longed for what I had the time before.

So here is my question for the boards key lime experts - have they changed the key lime pie or did I just order from the wrong place ? The dessert I remember from before would have been enough for several persons - this last was barely enough for one. Does Olivia's still serve what I remember ?

I think you're describing more like a tart - and I'm pretty sure they still serve that... We were there the end of May, and they had it.

I do believe you can also order the key lime pie by the slice or by the piece at OKW. DS loves their key lime pie, so we get it a few times.

HA! No...you got the same thing! Some places serve little individual pies, others make full pies and serve slices. There's no difference!

There is, however, always a little difference in taste. Some Key Lime pies are quite sweet, others are pretty tart. Key Limes have more of a sharp, tart taste than regular limes.

When you start eating conch chowder or a cracked conch appetizer, followed by stone crabs, topped off with Key Lime Pie and a margarita...and then request boat drinks -- you are officially a South Floridian!

According to JimMIA:
"When you start eating conch chowder or a cracked conch appetizer, followed by stone crabs, topped off with Key Lime Pie and a margarita...and then request boat drinks -- you are officially a South Floridian!"

This is my favorite meal!!!!! :cool1:

But, can I still be official while living in Massachusetts?:confused3

Now I am getting bummed out again! :sad2:

Ahhh...now that's different. You have Conch Republic potential!

You know, maybe they did ! Maybe I got the "off-site" pie :) !

I will ba back on-site this December, but not staying at OKW. We couldn't pass up the AP rate at the AKL, our favorite non-dvc resort. I wonder what kind of pie I'll get on this trip ??

Will it be ::

Off - site Key Lime :guilty:, or

On site, but not DVC Key Lime :), or

On - site, full DVC Key lime :sunny: !

And to JimMIA : Live Long and HANNAME !

We were ther about a month ago and had exactly what you described (small round etc.) I think the waiter called it a Tort. It was very good!

I would go to WDW just for the Key Lime Pie!
:jumping1:

I did find a recipe somewhere for the pie, supposedly Disney's recipe. It was good, but Olivia's was better. You don't want to know what goes in there!

My plan is that the only thing that will go in the pie will be my FORK !

Not what you asked. However it just so happens, I received this recipe today. So thought maybe if there were any Key Lime lovers, they may have opened this thread; and would like this... :drinking1

*-=*=-*Grand Floridian Cafe Chocolate Crusted Key Lime Pie*-=*=-*

Crust
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1 egg
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
8 ounces raw rice for baking pie shell

Filling
14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup Key lime juice

Garnish
Fresh sweetened whipped cream

To make crust, mix sugar & butter until creamy. Add whole egg and mix.
Sift cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt & flour. Add to mix. When all is combined, place between parchment paper. Flatten slightly & chill 1 hour. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Roll dough to 1/8-inch thickness & place in pie pan or tart pan. Cut circle of parchment large enough to cover bottom & sides of dough. Place paper on dough. Place rice on paper. Bake 10 minutes. Remove parchment & rice. Bake for an additional 10 minutes. Let cool.

For filling, combine milk & egg yolks on slow speed. Slowly add Key lime juice while mixing on low until blended. Pour into crust. Bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes. Chill until cold, preferably overnight. Garnish with sweetened whipped cream. Serves 10.

Mmmmmm, this sounds good. Which restaurant do they serve this in in the Grand Floridian. I think I'm going to have to put this on my "Must Do" list for November.:bounce:

Save me a bite of that! Anything made with chocolate is a good thing!

That's perfect! I was trying to figure out how to explain them.

And to anticipate your next question, cracked conch is conch fritter without the hush puppy!

Both are best enjoyed with one or more Red Stripes... :drinking1

(I think we've lost it in the lights here!)
