i know you can pay for stuff in disney using your rooms keycard but i've also heard it acts as your pass to get into disney resorts. has it also got a fast pass facility on it?
Yes, the key card to your room is used in the fastpass machines, to charge on if you give them a cc to link it to, your room ticket if you book a package, and you'd also use it for dining if you buy the DDP.

If you leave a credit card with the front desk, you can use your Key To The World (KTTW) card to make room charges around WDW.
It lets you through the gate at your resort, so you don't have to stop at the booth. Or in places that have un-manned gates, like CSR, it opens those gates. I don't know about other resorts - never tried that. My guess is that you can't, but I dunno. All you need to do when visiting another resort is show them a photo ID and they let you in. (So, why they bother with the photo ID, I also don't know.)
If you buy park tickets that are added to your KTTW card, and you're using THAT to enter the park, it will work in the Fastpass machines the same way any other park ticket does. If it wasn't used as a ticket to enter the park, it won't work in the FP machines (I tried once. )
From what I have read... we should be able to add our Disney tickets that we purchased at the Disney store to our room tickets when we get to the hotel. Then we can use the key as a... key, ticket and charge. Is this correct?

You put your resort ID containing your pass into the Fastpass machine and it will spit out a FP. If you have Annual Passes or other ticket media, then you put that into the FP machine.
Yes, your room key can be used for everything! Just let the front desk know that you want everything on it because you do have the option to say no. When my boys were younger I had separate cards for the room and the parks because I was afraid they would lose it so I held onto their park tickets.
