Ah, I see. So they're eating it for the flavor.
I saw something about this "recipe" the other day and I assumed they were eating that because it was cheap, not because they liked the flavor. (I have known many people who say they ate ketchup as pasta sauce growing up because they were poor.) I simply couldn't understand this because making your own sauce (or even buying jarred sauce) would be less expensive than buying Country Crock and ketchup.
As an aside, I don't eat ketchup at all (not even on hot dogs or hamburgers) or any butter substitutes, so this recipe sounds really awful to me since those are the top two foods that are the must disgusting to my palate. (Of course, I eat all sorts of things that others find unappealing, so I would never make anyone feel bad for eating something they like.)
I think those people are pulling your leg. You can buy jarred sauce for cheaper than bottled. DH says crap like that all the time. "We were so poor..." just being silly. They ate those no-bake oatmeal cookies because they were too poor to turn the oven on. Blah, blah, blah.
I watched the clip and it sounded like she was simply doing it the way SHE was taught growing up. It seemed normal to her. It may have started as an invention of necessity with an empty cupboard, but became a family favorite. I remember when jarred sauce became a pantry staple - I think it was in the 70's? This ketchup/butter sauce could have become the norm in their family before then and then got passed down.
I find it kind of amusing that all of the horrible stuff that seems to be on that show, people are up at arms about noodles!
Reminds me of the Duggars and the tator tot casserole. DIS people seemed to lose sleep over that recipe!
