If you decide to use a local vet for boarding, make sure you call them and confirm everything your pet will need to stay there, then talk to your vet about the schedule to get those immunizations. We're doing the same thing you're considering, only we're boarding our dogs in Vegas while we go to DLR. I talked to the vet out there, when we made the boarding reservation. Then talked to our vet about those immunizations. They require shots out there that are not required where we live. One in particular (Canine Influenza) requires a series of 2 shots to be considered current. I'm glad I spoke to everyone early because I had planned on just doing our dog's yearly shots right before we leave (because that's when they happen to be due). Considering I didn't want to give them something new and just leave and considering you need two shots a month apart for the flu shot, I was glad I got the ball rolling early, so we could get everything in place. I'd hate to drive across the country only to find out we couldn't board on dogs on a technicality.
