Hey everyone....we are heading to Orlando when there is an expected space shuttle launch at Kennedy Space centre (Dec. 6). We are extremely interested in going....heard it's supposed to be fantastic! Here is the problem. I have crowd related anxiety issues and don't do very well with lots of crowds (have to travel off season!) and I have heard that the travel back from the viewing areas can be pretty stressful and can take a very long time. Has anyone ever been, and can you tell me what your experience has been on the drive home? Also, if it's possible, is there any way to still view the launch without being that close and/or having the ability to depart without too much struggle through traffic? Thanks everyone in advance! Jo

We saw a launch several years ago (8?) and it was fabulous! We got a pass to the viewing area from KSC. I don't remember if there was a fee, but I think not. Then we drove out to the veiwing area and it was just a grass parking lot with the rows fairly spaced out. I don't remember feeling crowded. We did sit in our car most of the time. They had speakers with which they kept you updated, you could hear the countdown and everything. Then the actual launch does not take that long.

The only thing is, though, they scrub the launch fairly easy. We drove over there 3 or 4 nights before they finally went. But that last night, either they gave up or just got lax and we actually got to drive into a closer veiwing area than our tag was for :thumbsup2 I was pretty sure our car could make the trip from disney to ksc without a driver by the time all was said and done.

I do not remember the traffic coming out being an issue. But that was a long time ago, and I was really excited. So it could be that I just didn't care. Or, really, maybe I went to sleep. LOL. dh would have been driving. It would almost have to be an issue because there aren't many ways out. Like, um, 1, MAYbe 2.

Maybe you could pack a snack and a movie if you have a laptop or dvd and have dinner and a movie in the parkinglot while you wait for traffic to clear.

The biggest problem you'll have is with the traffic, especially when leaving. I suggest you stay and enjoy the Kennedy Space Center for a few hours after the launch and arrive early.

You can read a rundown on viewing shuttle launches and where here:

Titusville is the closest/best place when not purchasing tickets to view closer. Unfortunately, they no longer give out the free car passes that they used to as described above. They stopped them after 9/11.

Great information, thanks so much. DH and Uncle planned on visiting KSC on this trip. Didn't know there was a launch scheduled. That would be something to see....but doubt could get anywhere near enough that day.
