Not exactly the same thing, but when my father died, we got his headstone from the VA. We were told to wait a certain amount of time before putting it at the actual gravesite. The VA delivered it to our house, not the cemetery. My mother got someone (delivery guy?) to put in in her trunk because it was so heavy. She figured she could get it to the cemetery when the time came and the cemetery staff was available.
Time passed and delays happened. So she drove around with the headstone in her trunk for a fair number of months. Whenever she had someone at a store put purchases in the car trunk, they nearly had a heart attack when they looked inside and found themselves staring at a headstone.

We did get a little chuckle out of it.
Eventually it wound up where it was meant to be.
