Keeping organized in the room

Hi all!
I'm looking for ways to organize the clutter that takes over our desk area onboard. Specifically things like shore excursion tickets, navigators, flyers, and just all the assorted things you accumulate while onboard.

I'm familiar with the over the door shoe hanger solution that many like, but we are not fans of that method. I'm looking for other ways of organizing paperwork and things on the desk, not really toiletries or things I have brought onboard.

What are your ideas?

I'm interested to see what others suggest. Things that have yet to be used (like tickets) I leave in a drawer to access. I think next time I will bring a file folder - the kind that folds closed with the stretchy cord around it - to put Navigators, receipts, and other paper kind of stuff we're done with, mostly just to keep it neat and tidy for bringing home.

When I did a 12-night Med cruise last summer on RCCL, I brought magnetic clips for each day and put each day's calendar (which I'd printed off) and any excursion tickets and other material (like my directions for wandering Rome on my own) in the clips, then put those in 2 rows on the wall. As each day passed, my printed calendar and other stuff I'd printed went in the recycle bin and the excursion tickets went back into my overall trip folder for scrapbooking (possible) later. It worked wonderfully for a trip as detailed as that one was.

I brought a few ziplock bags that I used, but you could bring one of those accordion file folders to keep things safe.

I take a binder that has a pocket in the front cover and also a couple of those clear plastic three ring sleeves that I can put things in as we go along. It worked well for Alaska last year and I've already started working on the one for our Med cruise next year.

Tickets go in the safe.
Navigators stack in one corner of the desk with any small, flatish items inside. That way I bundle them all up at the end and put them in a folder or manila envelope and things are sorted out by days, ready for scrapbooks once home.
Flyers, when I look at them and determine that I'm not interested (spa sales, perfume, alcohol, photo sessions, whatever) go in the trash.
Lanyards hang on the lamp on the side of the mirror.

Only other things on the desk are magazines/books (stacked neatly) for reading.

I love this idea!

I love this idea!

Thank you! :) I was undecided on it at first - I did have a folder with pockets for each day when I was traveling - but ultimately I ended up loving it. I won't do it on every cruise, but for one with as many parts as this one had it made things a lot easier. (And helped me keep track of the days, especially after the first few - they all started running together without my usual at home schedule.)

I bring a binder with me. Before the cruise I have my packing list, important papers (cruise docs and whatnot), any research I've done and typed up, and extra sleeves in there. Once onboard I add the things I want to keep, like Navigators, to my binder. Tickets are usually kept on the desk.

I was thinking of that kind of folder too!

But the binder idea might be better for easier access but then again, we wouldn't need to access any of the old navigators once the day has gone by, but it could serve a dual function to keep any paperwork or notes for things that are coming up as well as storing things we want to keep.

Right now we usually do like others have said, flyers we don't want into the trash, navigators stacked in the corner of the desk, tickets usualy on the little lip in front of the mirror.

We're doing Panama Canal next year so I will have 14 days worth of "stuff" to keep track of and was just wondering if anybody had a great system.

The aforementioned magnetic clips.
I can't be the only person now contemplating putting metal strips on the walls of my house for this purpose... Kid activity management! Rotating art or photo displays! Separating the school piles, instead of the current "dump into one pile and forget what's on bottom" system. SO many options... I have a twine/clip system across a wall for school art, but it wouldn't support anything substantial. The metal and sturdy magnets could hold up so much more. Thanks for posting this!!

You're welcome!

Home Depot has magnetic clear paint that you can apply to a wall and then use magnets on. It is pretty cool. They keep it next to the chalkboard paint in pints.

I have a fluorescent accordion folder that I put everything important in. I need the bright folder because I loose everything.
Thanks NJMomto2. I'm going to look for that paint this weekend.

I have fold flat cardboard organizers used for scrapbooking that I'm bringing. Found them for cheap at Hobby Lobby
