My 3 y.o. has an ear infection. We are leaving for the World on April 25 and he will still be on medication. Any ideas on how to keep the medication cold while we are in the parks without using an icepak? We are flying, so I cannot carry an icepak in my hand luggage.

Have you spoken with an actual pharmacist about this?

Proper storage of Amoxicillin Suspension:
Store Amoxicillin Suspension in the refrigerator, between 36 and 46 degrees F (2 and 8 degrees C). Do not freeze. If necessary, it may be stored at room temperature. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any unused medicine after 14 days. Keep Amoxicillin Suspension out of reach of children and away from pets.

This site says refridgeration is preferred, but not required.

Some antibiotics are also available in chewable form that are easy for travel.

and check the airline website - I have brought yogurt and icepacks for my kids on the plane. Tell the TSA person you have yogurt for your child and medicine and you should be fine.

You can also carry though empty ziplock bags and get ice on the other side of security.

Will you need to carry the medication into the parks?

Yes - you can bring the antibiotics in quantities over 3.4oz as well as an ice pack to keep it cold in your carry on, they are exempt from the 3-1-1 rules on liquids.

All the info can be found here:
http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

The exemption for medicine is addressed in the section about the 3-1-1 rules and addressed in more detail under the travelers with disabilites and medical needs section.

A small cooler with an ice pack shoulld be ok for a few hours but I would also bring a few zip locks to fill with ice in case the ice pack warms up.

you'll be fine with the ice pak and security. btdt. I do it everytime I fly since I'm diabetic, and the best method for insulin is to keep it cool.

I would contact your ped before you leave and see if your child's med can be dosed less often. Most commonly used meds for ears can be dosed twice a day, including amoxicillin. Give it morning and bedtime and you are good to go!

If you do take it to the park, only take the dose you need in a syringe, labeled, because if you forget and leave it there and you brought the whole bottle, you then have a problem if the park is closed and you need another dose.

If you still need to bring medicine into the parks, you can bring a small cooler with you and put it under your stroller. Most resort refrigerators have small freezer sections where you can freeze the ice packs but I would also bring quart sized ziplocks for regular ice just in case.
