keeping in contact/mobiles

Hi,
Has anyone bought mobile phones in florida to keep in contact in the parks? I have heard that the walkie talkies don't work terribly well. We just wondered if it would be cheaper to buy there, call wise, than bringing phones from england.

walkie talkies are the cheaper alternative, the more channels they have the less interference you get. we have walkie talkies and bought them in walmart.
last year i bought a trac phone, and it was great, the only problem with it is that unless you buy the year pay as you go card for $99 your phone wont work and will need to be re registered or buy another one.

Exactly the problem that we found with the trac phones. DH bought one from Walmart and in the end we returned it - it wasn't much use to us. TBH we found that for the amount of times we would use it we just used to text each other from our regular phones. I think it cost me about £9.00 for 3 weeks worth of "where are you / where are we meeting up" texts so I was pleased with that.

we use the walkie talkies, they work OK, the only problem we get is that if other people are on the same channel we are able to hear their conversations and they can hear ours, but they are great to keep intouch and arrange meet ups, and once you have bought them all you need is new batteries each trip.

We got phones last year. Cost was $30 each, with $20 creadet. It cost us $1 a day to phone each other for as long we liked. So for $60 we talked each day. and next year it will be $40.

We take our own tri/quad band phones and buy US SIMs on e-bay. Just bought 4 on AT&T network for £42. Each SIM has $20 credit. A useful advantage is that we know our US mobile phone numbers before we go, so can leave contact info.

We have used walkie talkies in the past, with mixed success. The main problems were interference and range issues when users were at opposite ends of parks/malls. Obviously no such issues with mobiles.
