DS14 is about to have a sister. His dad and I divorced 10 years ago and his dad remarried 18 months ago. Well, he and the new wife just split! I have only met the new wife 3 times. She seems nice and all that. I would love for my DS to have some kind of relationship with this child, since she will most likely be his only sibling. Is that silly? Has anybody been through this and how hard is it? I don't trust my ex to stay in this child's life long enough to make sure they have a connection.

At 14 I don't know how much in common he will have with a girl baby. It's not like they can hang out.
But I bet the mother would greatly appreciate hearing that from you and maybe she has some ideas. I think it is a nice idea. But be prepared she may be hurt and not interested right now.

Let things go naturally. My dd's have a half sister we found out about 2+yrs ago. My dd's are 12 and 17, the half sister is 23 with 3 kids, which makes them aunts.

Keep it light and don't force it.

I don't personally but know someone who has. She actually made the call to the new wife, explained that she wanted the kids to remain close and set up dates to see each other etc. Sometimes step mom takes the kids on weekends, sometimes my friend takes the half sib for a weekend. They are a bit older than a baby..like sib is 6 and her children are 10,12. The common dad really isn't in the picture at all. They are not friends I wouldn't say, but they do make it a priority to make sure the kids have a relationship which is the most important part.

Maybe you can call the stepmom? At this point you are both mothers, the rest is really not too important.
