I know this might not sound like much, but considering all the trouble my DS has been in this past year, I'm happy to post something positive for a change, no matter how insignificant! :cool1:

Remember him getting kicked out of his computer class a couple of weeks ago? Well, he didn't exactly get kicked "out" of the class -- they were making him sit at a table with nothing to do. Smart way to deal with a problem child, right?

Anyway, I don't know how this came about, but the band director has taken DS under his wing! The BD is having DS go to the music room during that class period and having him do little repairs and such. Last week, he was cleaning music stands and this week he's going to be spray painting them.

 :cheer2:

I can't tell you how grateful I am to this teacher! I don't want to get my hopes up, but I can't help it. :teeth:

I always say that the power of positive thinking is just what all of us need!
I'm so happy that someone has taken an interest in your son, it sounds like a very productive way too. It sounds like a Good opportunity for you and your DS to talk about something positive together. It just may change his whole way of thinking :thumbsup2
I don't think it's insignificant at all :grouphug:

Thanks, Lynn! I really hope this can help DS make some changes. :goodvibes

I called the teacher this morning to thank him and tell him how grateful I am. I wanted to know how all this came about and he said that he has DS in detention every day and that he's a good kid in there. I've been saying this all along, but this is the first time a teacher has ever noticed it -- he said that he thinks DS is in detention because he WANTS to be there. It's a nice, quiet environment. Anyway, he said he walked into the office one day and there was a teacher in there, ripping into DS and they were going to make him sit in the office for that class period. He didn't want to see that happen.

Aren't band directors the best??? :sunny:

Oh, and he also asked me if we'd be okay with it if he could get DS interested in playing an instrument. :faint: Okay??? We'd die of happiness! Again, I'm not getting my hopes up, but it's a thought.

It's so good to see a teacher taking a personal interest in a child. This might be just what your ds needs from the school. It is a big deal for you and I wish you only the best. :grouphug: :grouphug:

What a great teacher! I hope that your son IS interested in playing something so that he can spend more time with this educator!

That's great! It only takes one person to inspire someone. Let's hope this is the start of something great for your son.

Thanks. :)

I was actually in tears earlier talking to this teacher. It's been far too long since a teacher has taken a positive interest in him and I just felt so grateful to him. Whether it works out or not, I'm so happy that somebody tried instead of kicking him to the curb.

What a great teacher!!!! I hope this will be a positive outlet for him! :grouphug:

That is terrific. Sometimes it just takes a caring and concerned mentor to straighten out a kid with problems. Best of luck to your son.

Thanks for the support. :sunny:

I've been trying to play it cool with DS about this, because if I show too much interest, he'll shy away. So I asked him in an off-hand way what he did yesterday, thinking he was going to tell me that he spray painted the music stands or something. Instead, he said, "I dunno. I learned something. I can't remember what."

About 10 minutes later, he came in and said, "Something about circle of fifths." :lmao:

So I acted surprised and shocked, "Circle of fifths??? That's music related! Wow, I didn't learn about that until college! Man, why is he giving you that kind of information?"

The band director also had him playing Xylophone -- excellent choice, because it has immediate results.

The only problem now is, the stupid computer teacher who kicked him out is now wanting him back in her class, even though he can't use the computers. She called the main office to complain that he was cutting class, so DS had to argue with the guy in charge of attendance about his placement, and he really stood up for himself. He told the guy to take it up with the principal because he approved of him being in the music room! :thumbsup2

Anyway, sorry for rambling. Nobody in my real life (even DH) gets why this is so great in my mind, so it's nice to be able to share it with my DIS friends.

WOW! I surely hope the best for your son! That is awesome. I think that a good teacher is great, but I also think that music is incredibly good for a kid. What a nice blend!

Well, I totally get it. Been there...I"m so glad to hear the band director has stepped up to the plate. I hope your son can get interestedi n percussion--like you mentioned, immediate satisfaction. just being a part of the band will give him a positive peer group and something to work for, even if the academics are less than stellar. What a gem that teacher is! I hope is works out well for ya'll :wizard:

God bless this band teacher!!!!!!

My nephew, now in his 20's, was a "spirited" child when he was younger...ADHD etc., so, while he was a good kid with a good heart, had some trouble with impulse-control, self-control etc. Anyway, his heart's desire was to be in the marching band when he was in HS, so he was first n line the day of marching band tryouts...and he made it!!! Played the mellophone(marching band french horn).

Well, band practice started, and he started his usual antics, and the band teacher told him flat out that he expected them to work and not goof off and if he continued to goof off, he'd be out of the band. The self-discipline that the band gave him changed his life. I firmly believe he would have had a much more difficult time in HS, and had the potential to get into trouble, had it not been for the band.

Everybody else, let's remember this Marseeya's son's band teacher when we get into the teacher bashing threads, OK?
