Kauai or Maui?

I have requested a search for a Hawaiian resort for next year. Oahu is not available and we're not interested in the Big Island. So I asked for something on Kauai (which we've all been to before) or Maui (which I've never been to, but the others have).

Do any of you have any firsthand experience with any of the II resorts available on Kauai or Maui? I'm thinking about calling back and narrowing down the search to Kauai, thinking that maybe there's more to do and see there. It is a gorgeous island, so I'm sure it would be a pleasure to go back there. But I'm undecided.

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello, me and the wife went to Hawaii for our honeymoon last February. We went to Maui, Hawaii, and Kauai. Kauai is very beautiful indeed, but Maui was our favorite. In my opinion, from the research I did before going, there was alot more to do on Maui than on Kauai. Ironically we bought a week at the Sands of Kahana in Maui. We only stayed 3 days on each island, so we saw very little of each. We will be going back next year, and this time we will spend the entire time in Maui. Just my opinion. Either way, it will be a wonderful trip. We loved both islands. If you do go to Kauai, and haven't before, take the Hollywood Movie Tour. It is Well worth the cost!

I stayed at the princeville condo resort on Kauii
for our honeymoon. My brother owns 3 weeks of an RCI resort. He let us have 2 weeks of it. It was very beautiful indeed. But if I had to pick an island again. I would probably stay in Mauii,
breathtaking!!

If I were chosing between Kauai and Maui, I would agree that Maui has more to do and see. Kauai is beautiful too, but seems much more rural. I am wondering why you nixed Hawaii. It is our favorite island. It has everything the others have plus much more. We are going back next year on an II exchange to the Big Island and staying at Kona Coast Resort II. We got our exchange there in just 5 days and it only cost us 160 points for a 1 bedroom with 2 baths. We are also looking for an exchange to either Kauai or Maui with no preference for either, but for a week on either side of our current exchange.

We haven't been to Kauai, but I can tell you from firsthand experience that Maui is GREAT. We attended a wedding there in 1997. We only had a short stay on Maui (and an excruciatingly long stay on Oahu) so we didn't really get a chance to see and do everything that we wanted to do. I was on a website recently that said that the average stay on Maui was 10 days. That would be wonderful. On our next trip to Hawaii (whenever that might be) it would be nice to visit the other islands, but if I had to choose one, it would be Maui.

BTW - Oahu was OK, just not our cup of tea. The visit to the Arizona Memorial was a very humbling experience.

Maui is great but the traffic there was horrendous! We were there in February and the roads were not sufficient to handle the increase in tourism and population. Personally, we like the Wailea area - less wind, great beaches, calmer water- but I don't believe there are any timeshares there. Kauai is more laid back - and so lush and gorgeous- You are safer on the south shore there (Poipu) it's much rainier and windier on the North (except in summer). So I guess it depends on whether you want action or not.

Thanks for all your input! Sounds like there are positives to both islands, so maybe I'll just see which one has a resort that becomes available.

Thanks again!

Since it's request first, you can decide when something comes available. Don't forget TUG to evaluated the specific resorts when the time comes.

I own at the Imperial of Waikiki, 2 bedroom/2 bath. I would be willing to "exchange" that for DVC pts of about about 200 or so. I can book any week you need, with advance notice. Email me privately if you are interested.
