Katy Perry - Teenage Dream video

It your teen is suseptible from watching one video (any video) you've got problems. Teens have many influences, of which YOU are the biggest one.
I'm not a fan of censoring, but I'm a big fan of keeping the conversations open. That seems to have worked for us as a family.

Well said! Too bad more people didn't have this attitiude.

I jus thank GOD that my daughter has no interest in Katy Perry (she mainly listens to most music for the actual talent of the singer) so I'm not subjected to that crap. :thumbsup2

With my luck, that will be one of the songs Mr. Scott has for them for recital!

Katy Perry is a very talented singer.

Katy Perry is a very talented singer.

It's probably just me then. I hate her voice; that, of course, is my humble opinion. YMMV.

... I've REALLY gotta add that to my sig...

I like her too and I think she's great except I thought Teenage Dream was way over the top and embarrassingly risque.

Have you NOT heard Peacock?

That song even made me blush and that is hard to do. :lmao:

I think Katy Perry is fantastic...although not for kids at all. Same for Lady GaGa (seriously, her videos should come with the same kinds of ratings they have for movies!! :rotfl:)

Edit to add...just to make sure I could still hang onto the Lady GaGa thought, I just re-watched the video for "Alejandro". Um. HOLY CRAP. I felt embarassed watching that and I'm 21!! Katy Perry has NOTHING on her. Not trying to hijack the thread here, but just saying. Love both of 'em, but wow....I guess comparing Katy to GaGa is like comparing apples to oranges isn't it?

Madonna. Same argument, different decade. I adored Madonna. She was the one pushing the envelope back then. I was 11 when "Like a Virgin" came out. Still a young teen when "Papa Don't Preach" came out. An older teen when the video to "Justify My Love" came out. None of those videos made me want to lose my virginity, get pregnant or have an orgy.

It's ALL about the home life, people. Mine sucked and that's why I made poor decisions. If I had of grown up in a healthy environment surrounded by people who loved me, I would have made the right choices. Music,tv, videos, video games...they are all just a blip on the radar screen.

Now, Katy Perry does appeal to the younger set so if they were to say, play this video on Nickelodeon or something like that, there might be an issue.

DD, 12, watches Obsess This on Nickelodeon every Saturday and Sunday. It is a 1/2 hour show that features videos popular with tweens. I saw "Teenage Dream" for the first time this weekend on that show.

I am OK with the video- nothing graphic- but the lyrics are a bit risque for tweens. I don't censor DD's choices in music, but we do have discussions about the lyrics from time to time. There are some real "teachable moments" in some of the songs today.

No. MTV doesn't make teens have sex.

The video is also shown on TeenNick on t.v. I had to turn the channel quickly when it came on in front of my 8 year old. Now, why was my 8 year old watching this channel? Because the old show Full House is on it in the morning, and we both like to watch it before school.

I think the video itself is not so bad, but the message of the song is over the top to me.

Just by you asking the question, I can already tell that my answer is no.

I don't even know what the song is about or what the video contains. But I am mom and I have the right to censor what my children see if I feel that the subject matter is inappropriate.

As for Madonna--well, my parents should have censored it. They should have censored other things as well too. Heck--they should have been parents.:rotfl: (I'm not saying what--but their absenteeism led to lots of things I had no business watching.)

Yeah, I'm thinking the video shouldn't be on TV shows that predominantly market to 8 year olds.

I was watching it the other day thinking "My, Katy Perry certainly sexed it up for this one--I wonder what her born-again parents are thinking about this.";) Not really caring of course!!!

I think the video is typical of most of them out there so it didn't phase me but I wouldn't expect to see it on a kid's channel.

I actually thought the video was pretty good. Most videos for "teens" these days are focused on angst, drama, and depression. It was refreshing to see a video that showed people (they really weren't kids) having a lot of fun. Beach parties, road trips, etc. I wish I were there, and not at work. :rotfl:

Agreed - I love the video! So much fun, and Katy Perry is totally my girl crush. She's adorable.

Compared to a lot of other videos, I don't think this one is too bad. I don't even necessarily think it's a "nowadays" type thing.. there have always been provocative videos, I think people are just more sensitive to it now.

I liked it.
My DD 12 and I are both huge Katy Perry fans and I would not have an issue with DD seeing this. I was more disturbed by the reckless car behavior than I was the bedroom scenes.
Funny or scary, not sure which but I am starting to like some of DD's music.

I agree with the poster who likened her to the attitude Madonna encountered. I was thinking even further back to the attitude Cher got for her risque costumes etc.

Its always something.

I've seen the video of Teenage Dream(I heard the song first) and yes, I don't think younger folks should see it. The um, er, bedroom scene with Katy and the guy was fairly tastefully done. She's so cute in that opening scene in the car, but yes, she should have buckled up.

The one video of Katy's I have a bit of a problem with is the one for California Gurls. (Again I heard the audio track first, and I mostly like it....there are some saucy lines that Katy sings in it, and I could have done without Snoop Dogg's rapping.) My issues with the video are that [1] Katy should have covered herself up a little more when she was up there on that cloud of cotton candy, and [2] that gummy should have given her a thumbs down instead of you know what.

I love Katy:lovestruc, I think she is pretty as a princessprincess:, and is quite talented. It suprises me that she sings these saucy tunes, yet she is so adorable and kind to her fans. She's not to everyone's taste, but you have to admit, she rocks.

I think the point of contention, around all this, rests on the willingness or lack-thereof to accept that reasonable folks may disagree about matters such as these and that it is the responsibility of each of us to make those kinds of decisions for our own family, without seeking to impose our values onto other families.

Agreed.

It is up to the individual (or the parent in the case of a minor child) to decide what THEY think is appropriate for their own family. However, it is not their right to decide what is appropriate for anyone outside of their family. Each group/individual needs to make their own decision on it.

Personally, I am anti censorship of movies, TV, music, and video games at the government level. If you don't want your kid playing a game, then don't purchase it. However, don't tell my household that I can't have it here... and don't expect me to buy a CD that doesn't have all the lyrics on it. I refuse to buy any media at Walmart because of this (then again, I don't go to Walmart if I can help it at all, but that's another thread).

Guess I need to go back and rewatch the thing, because I didn't see a whole lot wrong with it. Much better than most of Lady Gaga's and Brittany Spears stuff. (although I like both Gaga's and Brittany's music)

Dd doesn't watch MTV, she only sees the videos on TeenNick.

I don't ban many songs or videos. Instead we have a conversation about most of it. But, I don't use every one as a conversation starter about morals either. Too much and she would just start tuning me out.

I agree with the poster that said if you don't want your kid to see it, play it or hear it, then don't buy it or allow it. OTOH, I am glad that there are "cleaned up" versions of a lot of music. It makes it much easier to allow dd to pick out and purchase the music she wants without me hanging over her to do it.

I dont know, I didnt think it was that bad. Catchy tune. Maybe Im wrong but I dont think they were portraying themselves as teens...the song seems to me to say he makes her feel like a teenager. I dont see the big deal, way more stuff on tv thats worse. :confused3

Yes, that is the logical solution to things. But what would the DIS be without all the incessant arguing? ;)

I haven't seen the Teenage Dream video, but I am CREEPED out by the California Gurl video. Ice cream and sweets aren't supposed to be that over-sexualized. :rotfl:
