Kathy.. Ocean City MD question

Kathy,

You mentioned recently that trips to OC cost you more than Disney trips??? I live in Baltimore and own an ocean front Condo on 66th in Ocean City. With my mortgage it’s still cheaper to hang out downy ocean than it is in Disney! Unless you were staying at the Carousel, in the Presidential sweet during the 4th of July, I cannot imagine how it would have cost you so much? What did you do when you were up here?

We own a house on 120th street and yes our house mortgage is cheaper than Disney however if you check out condo rental prices they are sky high. It would be hard to find just a condo under 2 grand for a week. The food prices are sky high and so is the boardwalk entertainment. I think OC is way overpriced and no longer the beach town we remember.

Personally, I love Ocean City in the winter. During the summer, I tend to spend my days on the beach and my evenings in Rehobeth. That is still a nice quiet(ish) beach town IMHO.

Agreed but most people rent in OC and stay and play in OC. So to price it all out as a regular vacationer not a summer local or local it is through the roof. My SIL spent $3K on her rental alone and then another $2K in food and entertainment. That is a heck of alot of disney for a family of 5.

OC is definately a lot more expensive a trip than WDW. Even at a simple motel, the cost per night is still insane! Eating/Activities on the Boardwalk are expensive too. I like Ocean City, but we find it hard to justify the expense. We can spend less money and enjoy a week at the beach in Florida in Daytona Beach, or Cocoa Beach, and stay in a nicer place for less money, eat for less money. Of course, its because of Florida beaches being year round attractions. Ocean City has just priced itself out of our budget. I do miss Thrasher's Fries though, dripping in Apple Cider Vinegar.

We used to stay in condos for a week. It wasn't bad when we split the cost with other family members. We would go in peak season.

No I didn't stay at the Carousel. I remember when that was in no man's land and there wasn't anything around it.

We are trying to get back there this year for a few days.

I couldn't agree more.

BTW, my parents own a condo on 119th, Oceanwalk East. They bought it about 26 years ago when I was 13! Before anything was on the bay side. Seeing old photos really reminds me of what OC used to be; before Sunsations invaded.

We are spoiled. We always stayed oceanfront and tried to stay on the Boardwalk or close to the end of the Boardwalk.

Once we were on 99th street and I missed the atmosphere of the Boardwalk area.

Oh the memories of Dough Roller pizza, Loves water ice and jumping out of the way of the tram on the boardwalk.

Remember the 5 and Dime before the renovation?

I loved Edwards before they remodeled. We like Dough Roller but our favorite pizza is Caruso's on the Boards by the Ripley's museum.

Thrasher fries were the best.

We were there several years ago and hit all our favorite food places.

We loved the English Diner and their fried chicken. We would always go to Savages Market next door for snacks and magazines.

Have you been since they moved the tram around the back of the buildings near the Pier? That certainly made it better when it was crowded.

Trip down memory lane. Staying at the Decatur House or the Majestic on the boardwalk with my grandma. Going on the wild mouse or the rociet ship thing that made the loud noise. Eating at Phillips when it was just a crab house. Going to shanty town. Of course Thrashers with vinegar, loves shaved ice, Fishers popcorn and Wockenfuss candy. Oh my. The new Edwards sucks. We like Tonys pizza or Ledos uptown. How about the Fractured Prune homemade donuts to order. They used to be on 25th street. We had a trailer there on the bayside call the Isle of Wright before we bought the house. Oh the memories. How about the huge Chinese restarant that was on 24th street that is now some dragon golf course. oh the days...........Getting drunk as a youngin at The Brass Rail or Purple Moose Saloon before the days of Secrets.

We would always make a trip to Candy Kitchen with my mother. She would get us chocolates to munch on.

I can remember going to the Fractured Prune for donuts.

We used to make fun of people that went to Phillips until we went and then we were addicted.

We love to go to Ocean City- it's our favorite beach town- but we're kind of just like Kathy. We're from the Pittsburgh area and with travel, accommodations, and everything else involved with the trip- it's about the same or more than Disney. We always stay on the Boardwalk around 23rd street I believe... and the hotel we usually stay at isn't the best on the Boardwalk... My family has finally realized they can't fight me when it comes to going to Disney and since the prices are about the same- we usually head to the World when it's vacation time.

Ethan has to see them every time we go to the boardwalk. How about skeeball at Playland. We just did that last week when we went to clean out the house. LOL.

The place I hated to go into was Marty's Playland!!!! My kids loved that place. I was pretty good with the claw machines in the back.

I only have to drive thirty min to get to O.C.!! I LOVE Dough Roller!!! But my favorite is all the Put-Put!!

I just booked a place in OC the other night - we live about 2 hrs away and like to get our OC fix in once a summer with a just a weekend. Because it's too expensive to stay longer!! Most places (at least on the boardwalk) require a 3 night minimum - but I've found a couple that I can get one night only. It's not a cheap night - but we splurge for it. We can get a couple days on the beach, an evening of boardwalk fun, some Thrashers, some Fishers carmel corn - and we've had our fix!

I agree with the rest of you - if you priced out a full week at OC, you're in the same ballpark as WDW.
