Day 4—Saturday, August 16, 2003

Cast of Characters
Me (Karen)—The planner of the trip and family Disney nut.
Linda—My older sister
Michael—My brother-in-law
Rob—My 12 year old nephew
Catie—My 10 year old niece

We woke up early to get to the Animal Kingdom for park opening. We went immediately to the Kilaminjaro Safari, and rode that. There were lots of animals out—more than I ever recall seeing on the ride in the past. Catie is a big animal lover, so she really enjoyed watching the rides. I, on the other hand, do not like animals, and don’t like doing very many things at the Animal Kingdom. The kids called Animal Kingdom day Auntie Karen’s grumpy day (although I wasn’t that grumpy—just a bit bored at times).

After the safari, Linda took the kids to see the Flights of Wonder show. I ran to get Fast Passes for Kali River Rapids, but the line was only about 15 minutes, so I made the decision to go get Fast Passes for Dinosaur instead.

Michael went off to find out where his boss’s son Christian worked in the Animal Kingdom so we could spend some time with him. He worked in the aviary in the Pagani Trail. He talked to the kids for about an hour, and patiently answered all of their questions. He brought out some mealworms and got the birds down to ground level so the kids could get a good look at them.

We then went to Kali River Rapids. For the first time ever, I barely got wet on the ride. It was a shock to me. I always get the water cascading over me when you go down the drop. Everyone loved the ride, but we all agreed that it was much to short. On our way out, we grabbed Fast Passes for it so we could ride again later in the day. We then headed to Dinosaur, and rode it.

The kids wanted McDonald’s for lunch, so Linda took them to Restaurantasaurus. Michael and I picked up sandwiches and ribs at the Flametree Barbecue, and met the rest of the family at Restaurantasaurus. We got the meal deals for $11.99 that included a soda, entrée, bottle of water, and ice cream or pop corn. It was a great deal, especially for the rib meal that Michael got. I opted for the pulled pork sandwich, and it was very yummy.

After lunch, we went to see the Festival of the Lion King. This show is so much fun. I really love it. They really do a great job on this one. It’s one of the best shows at Disney.

We then rode on Kali River Rapids again, and I got the soaking that I usually get on the ride. I was drenched from head to toe. I think I probably could have squeezed a gallon of water off my clothes. We then headed for the Primeval Whirl. The kids loved this wild mouse spinning coaster. We were all laughing throughout the ride. I was so soaked from Kali that I feel bad for whoever got stuck sitting in my seat after I got off Primeval Whirl.

As we started to leave the park, the skies opened up into another torrential downpour. We were in one of the caves heading out of the parks during the downpour. Rob and Catie started singing their own version of “It’s A Small World”—It’s a wet world after all. The people standing around us were very amused by it.

When the ran started to slow, we made a dash for the bus, and just made one. There was a really nasty woman on the bus who was mad that the driver was trying to get her to move down so we could all make it on the bus. She finally moved and we all got on.

We left property that night to go have dinner at the Olive Garden. The kids really love the pasta there, and I love the Zuppa Toscana, and breadsticks. We all really enjoyed our meals.

We then headed to Disney Quest. It was really packed. Everything had long waits. We didn’t get very much accomplished. We went on the Buzz Lightyear Astroblasters, the Mighty Ducks Pinball (Catie came in first, and she was so excited about it), and the Virtual Jungle Cruise. We were all hot, and tired, so we left Disney Quest, and went back to the hotel to go swimming before bed.

Love Kali. Hate getting soaked. What to do? Deal (grumpily) with wet undies all day!
