Day 2—Sunday, May 8, 2005

Beep beep, beep beep, the horn went beep beep beep.

Lily and I woke up bright and early on Sunday morning. Lily went out for a walk/run while I was getting ready. I took a walk around the Dolphin and out to the Boardwalk to enjoy the view. I ran into Lily on her run, and we went back to the Dolphin together.

After we were both ready for the day, we walked our bags over to the Boardwalk Villas, where I was making my first trip home as a DVC member. As we dragged our bags along, I noticed a sign on a wooden wall over the portion of the Boardwalk they were replacing. It said “Surrey Bike Traffic” and had an arrow pointing to the water. When I saw it, I couldn’t help but laugh, and I stopped to take a picture of it. I told Lily that Disney would probably fix it later in the day, so I had to take the picture now. And sure enough, it was fixed by the time we went back to the Boardwalk that afternoon.

We checked into the Boardwalk Villas, but our room wasn’t ready yet. They gave me a number to call later to see if our room was ready. We left our bags with bell services, and headed out to the Boardwalk Bakery for breakfast. Lily got a cheese Danish and coffee, and I got a croissant and orange juice. I really enjoyed my croissant—it was very tasty and flakey.

After breakfast, we walked to Epcot. When we walked in, they told us we could have a free picture taken for Mother’s Day, so we posed for one. I told them that Lily wasn’t my mother ;)

We then made a beeline for Soarin’. I suggested that we grab fast passes before heading into the standby line, as I’m sure we’d want to ride it again. We were in the row one for Soarin’ and in a word, I’d describe it as breathtaking. The scenery is beautiful, and the take off is pretty cool. I really enjoyed everything about this attraction.

After riding Soarin’, we headed over to the Pin Station to get some pins. We then headed to Test Track to grab fast passes before heading back over to Soarin’ to use our fast passes. We were in row one for Soarin’ again. I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I looked down and around to take a look at how the ride works (I love looking at the way things work—the creativity of the Imagineers amazes me sometimes).

After riding Soarin’ the second time, we headed back over to Test Track to use our fast passes. The cars were temporarily stopped, so we decided to head over to Mission: Space first. There was only a ten minute wait for Mission: Space, so we jumped in line and got right on the ride. I have to say that while I enjoy the ride, I still think it’s weak. I wish I had ridden it before they tamed it down.

We then walked over to Test Track, and took a spin. For the first time in a long time, we made it throughout the ride without any technical difficulties. I have had a stretch of bad luck on the ride, with brief stops mid-ride, and random visual and audio technical difficulties. It was nice to have a ride with no technical difficulties for a change.

We then headed over to the World Showcase in search of food. We opted for take out at the counter service restaurant in China. I got the orange chicken bowl, and Lily got the lo mein. I really enjoyed my chicken. It was very tasty, and all white meat. I made a mental note to keep that restaurant in mind for future trips.

I noticed that Epcot Vybe would be doing their first set of the day at 1:00, so we headed over to the American Adventure to see them. This was the first of many sets of Epcot Vybe I would be catching on the trip. While we were waiting for them to start, I started chatting with one of the folks sitting on a bench, and she was actually the mom of Suzy, one of the singers in Epcot Vybe. She described her daughter to me, and I knew exactly who she was talking about. We gabbed for a bit about Epcot Vybe, and Suzy. It was Suzy’s birthday the day before, so I told her to wish Suzy a happy birthday for me.

We then headed over to Italy to meet up with our DIS friends from the Yaya thread: CrazyBoutDisney and her DH DaveH, Helenabear, FLRose, and Kama89 and her family. They had lunch at Alfredo’s that day, and we decided we would meet up with them after lunch. I called Helenabear and told her we were looking for them, and as soon as I hung up, I spotted CrazyBoutDisney, so I ran over to her. Lots of hugs and introductions were exchanged, and Beth presented Lily and I with Yaya Spring Fling 2005 t-shirts. We all donned our t-shirts and posed for a picture along the water.

We then headed over to the shop in Japan and browsed around a bit. I tried out some of the massagers, but didn’t really like them. We then went out and watched the drums in front of the pagoda. Those guys sure were having a lot of fun performing.

Lily and I then said goodbye to our Yaya friends. We decided we would see if our room was ready, and then head over to MGM. I called, and found out our room number, and we walked over to the Boardwalk.

We were in room 3061. We really lucked out and got a great room. We were in a garden view room overlooking the village green, but we had a blocked view of the water and Boardwalk as well. We could see the Yacht & Beach Club from our balcony. We had a huge balcony with three chairs and two tables. I really enjoyed sitting out on the balcony throughout the trip, especially in the wee small hours of the morning after closing down Jellyrolls. I was very impressed by my DVC room, and was glad that Lily was with me to share my experience of my first trip home as a DVC member. I was very glad that I bought into DVC, and I’m looking forward to taking more trips home in the next 37 years.

After getting settled in the room, Lily and I walked over to MGM. The Lights! Motors! Action! Show was about to start, so we walked directly to the show. We were up in the nosebleed section in the far right. The show was very good, and we both enjoyed it, but neither of us had a burning desire to go back and see it again this trip. I think I’ll probably only see it every few trips.

Hunger struck, so we decided to head over to the Commissary for dinner. We both got Cuban sandwiches. The sandwich was so big I couldn’t finish it. It was very tasty, though, and I really enjoyed it.

We then road the Great Movie Ride, the Tower of Terror, and the Rock ‘N Roller Coaster, three of my favorite rides at Walt Disney World.

We then headed out of the park. We had plans to meet some folks at Jellyrolls that night. I called to see who would be playing that night, but they didn’t know, and told me to call back later. On our way back to the Boardwalk, we decided to take a side trip to the Hess Station near the Boardwalk to check out the convenience store there. As we walked along, we heard someone beep at us, so we both immediately waved. I started to say, “Who would be beeping at us?” and then I got a good look at the driver and realized it was Ray McGee, one of my favorite Jellyrolls piano players! Guess I now knew at least one of my favorite pianomen who would be playing that night :)

After browsing around the Hess Station, Lily and I walked back to the Boardwalk to get ready for our evening at Jellyrolls. When we arrived, we met up with Peggy, a friend of our DIS friend Lizdotcom99, and her husband Cliff. We were expecting more friends, so we took a table next to theirs in the front row.

As soon as I sat down, Ray said from the stage, “I knew that was you.” And I said, “It took me a second to realize who you were because I couldn’t figure out who would be beeping at us.” Much to my disappointment, Ray wasn’t playing with my other favorite piano player Scotty. Christian was there instead.

When it came time to change piano players, much to my pleasure, I saw Scotty walk through the door. As soon as he walked onstage, I got a smile and a wave from him. I was glad that my beloved Scotty and Ray were both playing this evening, even if they weren’t playing together. Scotty was playing with Jason that night.

Cliff and Peggy put in a request for “Moon River.” Neither Scotty or Jason knew the song (although Scotty attempted it). He told them to take their money back or request another song. I told them that Scotty does a great job on “Beyond the Sea,” so they requested that. Scotty said, “Did you tell them to request that?”

At one point, someone requested an Elvis song, so Lily and I were arguing over whether or not Elvis was dead. Lily said he was. I said he wasn’t because I see him every now and again at a train station near my house. Ray heard us talking, so he asked us what we were talking about. Lily was like, “Elvis is dead.” Ray was like, “Thanks for sharing.” Now, this may sound like a nothing part of my trip report, but it does come into play again later in my trip.

Eventually, our DIS friend Snowwark and her husband John joined us at the bar that night. We all sure had a fun time singing along, and dancing. I put a request on Scotty’s piano to get me the schedule for who would be working the rest of the week, which was probably the easiest five bucks he made all night.

All of my friends had left shortly after midnight, but I was still sitting there in the front enjoying the music. There were two girls who were dressed to kill sitting at the table next to me by the end of the night. One of them was very floozy, and was flirting with Scotty pretty heavily, but he was pretty much ignoring her.

At the end of the night, Scotty said, “We have time for one more. This one is for our friend Karen in the front row.” Some of the crowd moaned, so Scotty said, “This one is for Karen and everyone else.” The floozy shot laser eyes at me. I said, “Thank you” to Scotty, and he started singing, “You’ve Got A Friend In Me” (which is one of his favorite songs to perform, and one that he often dedicates to me). As Scotty was singing to me, I noticed that the floozy kept on looking over at me and glaring. I guess she didn’t like me getting all of Scotty’s attention.

When Scotty finished playing, I went over to chat with him for a few, and he went in the back to get the schedule for me so I would know which nights I could come see him play again.

I then headed back to the room. I was a bit wound, so I decided to sit on the balcony for a bit so as not to disturb Lily too much. It was kind of neat to sit there at 2:00 a.m. and just enjoy the view. I watched two rabbits chase each other around the village green. I saw some woman walk over to an ashtray and pick out a cigarette butt. I watched a bunch of drunks come out of the bars. I even saw the Jellyrolls pianomen walk by (I was going to shout hello to them, but I didn’t want to disturb the sleeping guests).

After enjoying the view, I headed back into the room and got ready for bed.

As we DVCers say "Welcome Home" Karen - sure sounds like you got a nice a room for your first stay of many to come. And it sounds like you know how to enjoy your trips to WDW! :wave2:

That's my girl! I'm proud that you made the floozy mad!! :goodvibes

Did you take you microphone along so you could perform with Ray and Scotty?

I forgot to bring your microphone, Pam. I'll have to bring it in Nov./Dec.
