Day four--Saturday, December 14, 2002
After eating breakfast in the room, we headed over to MGM to celebrate Joe's sixth birthday (a day when Joe was also very sick with a severe case of I-WANT-itis). Joe had $30 in Disney Dollars in his pocket that my mom, his dad, and I gave him for his birthday, and he couldn't wait to spend them. So, we had to wait while he touched, turned, and played with everything in the stores as we walked into MGM. He finally bought a $14 pair of sunglasses (which took forever to buy because they were ringing up as $16). Those sunglasses were on his face for a total of about 5 seconds, and were on the nightstand the rest of the trip.
After Joe spent some of his money, we were off to ride on Star Tours, which Joe absolutely loved. And of course, Joe had to look for something to buy here, settling on two play sets with action figures of some of the characters from the movies. After opening the boxes and putting the action figures in a bag for easy carrying, Joe realized that he didn't get a ship in his sets, and begged to get another one with the a ship, but he was denied. He said it was his worst birthday ever for the first time of the day.
Carolyn had Joe pose for one of those Star Wars photos, and wound up dropping $50 on a poster size picture of Joe with a free 4x6. She thought she would be getting an 8x10 of it as well, since they printed one out, but she just didn''t understand what they told her, so she wound up being disappointed that she paid $50 and didn't get the 8X10. She thought they screwed her over, but I told her that she got exactly what they told her she would get.
After shopping, we headed to the Indiana Jones stunt show. One of the cast members saw Joe's birthday pin, so we were escorted down to the second row. After the show, Joe got to meet Indiana Jones (Jeff), and he was absolutely thrilled.
When we walked out of the stunt show, Joe immediately made a beeline for the pushcarts of Indiana Jones merchandise. He begged for a play set with minature Indiana Jones action figures, and was denied again. He said again that it was his worst birthday ever. Carolyn told Joe that if he still wanted those actin figures later in the day, they would talk about it then.
We then went to Hollywood and Vine for an early lunch. I thought the buffet had a wonderful selection, and the food was quite good. I loved the southwestern Caesar salad and the potato salad. The characters were fantastic at this meal. They each visited our table several times, and they were very playful. I loved watching Minnie and Goofy swing dance.
After lunch, Joe burnt off some steam at the Honey I Shrunk the Kids playground. We also went of the backlot tour. They didn't do the Pearl Harbor water show because it was too cold. I was a bit disappointed because I haven't seen that yet. Oh well, I guess it gives me an excuse to start planning another trip.
Carolyn went on the Rock 'N Roller coaster in the afternoon. The line was 35 minutes long, and we couldn't get a fast pass because we had dinner reservations and Fantasmic that night. So, we decided we would wait in the line. Joe wasn't tall enough to ride (he was just a speck to short because the heels of his shoes weren't as tall as the ones he was wearing when he got on the stuff at Disney Quest with the same height requirement), so we were going to do the child swap thing. The cast member at the line gave Carolyn a child swap fast pass, and I went to get in line. I decided that since I've already been on the Rock 'N Roller Coaster a million times, it wasn't worth a 35 minute wait to me, so I got out of line and told Carolyn I wasn't going to ride. Then, I remember that Carolyn had the child swap fast pass, so I told her she may as well go on the ride. So, we kind of scammed Carolyn a fast pass for that one.
We then went to dinner at Mama Melrose's as part of the Fantasmic Dinner package. We had a 3:30 priority seating, and we had to order off the lunch menu. Carolyn and I both ordered chicken parm, and I was surprised to see that was an upcharge of $2 per person for ordering the chicken parm, especially since we were ordering off of the lunch menu. I think we got a bit ripped off on the price of the pacakage, but the food was pretty good.
After dinner, Joe played some video games at Pizza Planet, blowing through close to $10 in 10 minutes. He then remembered that Carolyn had said that they would talk about the Indiana Jones toys, and he said he still wanted it, so we went over and Joe got one set of Indiana Jones toys (though he was begging for two because he really really wanted them).
We then headed to Fantasmic. The stadium was only about 3/4 filled. I've never seen it so empty except for one time when it was raining, and they almost canceled the show. The show was as fantastic as always, and worth the price of a day's admission just to see it. I love the Steamboat Mickey at the end of the show.
After Fantasmic, we went to see the Osbourne Family Spectacle of Lights, which is breathtaking. It's fun to look at the lights through the holographic glasses. Someone standing near us was convinced that Ozzy Osbourne was the one who donated all of the lights, and he wasn't just joking around.
As we left the park, Carolyn remembered we had pictures taken with Mickey, and wanted to check them out. The line was huge. I decided I didn't want to wait, so I left Carolyn and Joe, who wound up waiting in line for over a half hour to get those pictures. I went back to the hotel and started writing out my postcards.
When we Carolyn and Joe got back to the room, Carolyn asked Joe if he wanted to play with his toys or go swimming. Joe decided to play with his toys. Carolyn got ready for bed, and 10 minutes later, Joe said, "Let's go swimming now." Carolyn told him no because he decided to play with his toys, and Joe had a complete meltdown. He cried and cried about how it was his worst birthday ever because he couldn't go swimming. Oh the joys of being six.
