Not really a good year for seaworld!!

so sad :-(

No it hasn't been a good year at all. Such sad news.

That is terrible. But I know why something like this would happen again.

The same day they had a man die at the waterpark, too. It wasn't a drowning but haven'tt heard the cause of death.

How did she die?? This totally sucks.
As the poster above me said they noticed she was acting out of character and started to treat her early afternoon and she passed away a few hours later that evening, it was all very sudden.
They are doing a necropsy but the results won't be available for a few weeks yet.
It's such a great loss to Seaworld, she was pretty special

OK, I am following a good discussion on another board and I found a post with a lot of truth IMO. I really think that this is true and to be honest, I had similar thoughts but was a bit afraid to post them...

Teebin, a great guy (or gal??) with obviously a lot of background about Universal and Themeparks in Orlando, posted this... He gave tons of valuable info and seems to be really caring!

OK, here goes. (this is NOT the original words... These are my thoughts. Just about the same he started over @ orlandounited)

What about all these deaths at Seaworld?
Obviously there were 4 cases within 3 month. 3 in Orlando and 1 in San Diego.
There was no threatening desease and the whales died suddenly (was Taima DURING the birth???)

Well, Whales ARE smart and they are USED to human interaction.
Back in February they STOPPED this interaction and ever since the "human buddies" refused to go into the water with them.
What should they "think"??

Does anyone consider that the whales do have some kind of negligence??
Do they feel alone?
Do they "think" they did something wrong and the humans are going to penalize them for something?

I think that this is not impossible.
And I think that these whales we not old enough for a "sudden death".

I know that there is a huge discussion about whales in captivity and I really think that there will never be a consense. I don´t want to start another debate (because anti seaworld people will def start to say that is nonsense and that they died because of captivity)

Only one little statement about that (can´t stand it)

Someone wrote on facebook, that the new born calf shouldn´t stay @seaworld with his mom. That he/she should be brought back to the wild where they belong.
Do they really feel like a new born should be taken away from MOM?
Do they really want to descide if that is a life which is good for the animal or not?
What about a poor kid born in a favela or in the third world?
Should we really think about taking it away from his/her mom and bring it to a wester industrial country just because WE THINK AND WE DESCIDE what is good or what is bad for a creature?

Just my 0,02 and no offense to anyone (I´m not wearing my flame suit, so come on!) I think that this is how it is. There will always be 2 sides of a story, right?

I won't pretend to know anything about killer whales or how they think but that does make sense that they may be a little depressed.:confused3 I certainly hope not because it makes me so sad to think they are suffering and that they are being punished for something.:sad1:

I have wondered the same thing, but in the sense, that the trainers have been in the water with these whales, and the no longer are in there with them! Is it possible that they are feeling a very real loss, or connection with the trainers? I have wondered it, but never said it out loud! It seems odd to me, that there has been so many deaths in the last year, and what has changed in all of it! One MAJOR thing!!!!!!!I think it is at least debatable!

I think depression could definitely be out there as a possible cause/contributor to the deaths. Maybe not Taima's as this was stillbirth complications (and the trainer's didn't do waterwork with her) but could be for Sumar (the whale at Seaworld San Diego) and for Kalina especially. She was quite close to Taima, so this may have also been a contributing factor.
Also another whale, Kayla, was said to be sick during the summer, she did not appear in shows for a while.
So who knows :confused3

In such a small population, it's easy to think something is way out of the ordinary. With less than 30 whales, 3 deaths is a lot. But say 3 penguins died out of the 300 or so that they have, it would be in such a lime light.

It is sad when something like this occurs. But there's still so little that we know about them.

I know what you mean but I think that 3 whales in 3 months is too much...

And in the Post about "tilikums life today" there is a new statement about Tilli... Looks like there might be a little truth in the theorie of a possible depression :sad2:

I hope they will start the "real" show again soon...
