Justice O'Connor has just resigned!

Yup. :( Say goodbye to the right to an abortion. Or birth control if the wingnuts have their way. :(

My #1 reason for voting for Kerry was that I did not want President Bush to nominate Supreme court members.

No doubt.... any right-of-center person that is nominated will be reflexively attacked as a "right wing nut job bent on ripping up the Bill of Rights."
Yup, its time to bring out those litmus tests. Both sides will be using them

Now lets at least try to place nicely until nominations are made, and then we can start the mud slinging ;)

i can think of a few people that could realistically be appointed that wouldn't be SO bad. but there are others who really are right wing nut job bent on ripping up the Bill of Rights. ;)

To balance:

Loony/whacko left or hysterical/rabid right.

It's bound to cause trouble. So here's what you do: you pick the candidate with the best hair style...

No doubt at all. And I agree with Geoff, anyone that is to the right of center will be vilified.

Before the moonbattery gets too out of hand... remember that how a President thinks a nominee will vote is often different then how they actually vote once confirmed. Remember that Souter was supposed to be a conservative. O'Connor was put on the bench by Reagan.

the more i listen to the news the more nervous i get
she was clearly a swing vote
they are calling this a earth shaking decision
they have already said alberto gonzales is a possibility
john roberts they say is the one bush could nominate who the dems would not protest as much as others he is conservative

The Bush administration is under intense pressure from social conservatives to nominate someone who will issue rulings with a fundamentalist religious perspective. The Terri Schaivo fiasco is a perfect example of what could happen if the far right is able to replace O'Connor. If you want to continue to live in a democracy, then it is critical to be prepared to wage a campaign in favor of a moderate, sensible justice.

People for the American Way will be leading the campaign against any jurists from the radical right. Their web site is www.pfaw.org.

O'Connor was put on the bench by Reagan.

i don't think reagan was as........as bush. things have really changed in the past 20 years too. for one thing, the republicans now control congress.

from CNN

"Possible replacements include Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and federal courts of appeals judges J. Michael Luttig, John Roberts, Samuel A. Alito Jr., Michael McConnell, Emilio Garza and James Harvie Wilkinson III. Others mentioned are former Solicitor General Theodore Olson, lawyer Miguel Estrada and former deputy attorney general Larry Thompson, but Bush's pick could be a surprise choice not well known in legal circles"

Hmmm, looks like there are lots to choose from. I think Gonzales is too contraversial for the timeframe in which they have to get the nominee aprroved, so I expect it will be one of the others listed here.

It started before my observation... rewind the tape.

Interesting that there are no women on the list.
