I was so happy these last few years with my pay as you go phone. It is with T Mobile and I only spend $50 every three months. My son has only been away at college for two weeks and I almost used up my usual three months of phone usage. I tried to switch to a text only fee but it's not giving me that option. I am afraid T Mobile has dropped that option now. I will wait a little just to see if the texts drop figuring the longer he is gone the less he may text me but if this keeps up I may need to go to plan B although I have no idea what that is yet.

Do you have an ipod touch or ipad? There are fee apps for texting and/or texting plus calling.

No.I have a basic cell phone but it's a pay as you go plan. It was very economical until these last two weeks.

T-mobile has a 1500 text/talk plan with a tiny bit of data for $30 a month. I know it's more than you are currently spending, but the pay-as-you-go costs 10 cents a text, so this new plan may prove more cost effective. You can change to this for the next few months and probably downgrade back to the regular plan later if your son stops texting you.

Also places like Callingmart often have discounts for buying minutes for t-mobile (like $100 for $95).

Maybe instead of calling each other, you could skype. If you have internet already it would be free and neither of you would use up your minutes.
